Jan-Mar 2014 in reviewBy David Denyer, Professor of Organizational Change and Director of Research

After submitting our REF2014 document last quarter, we now begin the process of working towards REF2020 and ensuring that we achieve the targets set out in our Corporate Plan. As you are aware, research features prominently in the strategic priorities, which have been summarised as Plan 415i.

Several ‘research conversations’ were held between January and March with faculty, staff and doctoral researchers in SOM to discuss what Plan 415i means for us. The discussions highlighted the research challenges and opportunities for SOM and have helped define a series of research initiatives. A member of the Research Development Group (RDG) will lead each of the initiatives.

It was a privilege to present the inaugural SOM research awards at the Royal Society at the end of February, which recognized and celebrated our transformational research.

I was also delighted to present to the meeting of Court and the Royal Highness The Duke of Kent on the topic of risk. Several SOM faculty joined colleagues from across the University in presenting posters, which showcased our extensive capability in this field and highlighted the power of the ‘One University’ approach.

I hope that you enjoy our newsletter, which will be published quarterly with the aim of helping our staff, students, alumni and friends to keep up-to-date with research in SOM.

DR SAM AGYEI-AMPOMAH Reader in Finance

What interesting research are you working on at the moment?

In collaboration with colleagues at City University London and the University of Surrey, we are re-examining the issue of luck versus skill in the performance of mutual fund managers. Studies that use standard multi-factor benchmark models show that managerial performance is largely due to luck rather than skill. We propose the use of a benchmark that is consistent with the style and mandate of the mutual fund. Our results show that standard multi-factor models tend to underestimate managerial ability and overstate the proportion of funds whose abnormal performance can be attributed to chance, when compared against the style-consistent practitioner benchmarks.

What journals are you targeting?Journal of Banking and Finance.

DR EMEL AKTASSenior Lecturer

What interesting research are you working on at the moment?I am working on multicriteria decision making to enable sustainable operations, focusing on the trade-off between service level and energy consumption which has implications on economic and environmental aspects (i.e. fuel consumption and CO2 emissions). My research involves mathematical modelling and optimisation.

What journals are you targeting?Production and Operations Management; Journal of Operations Management; European Journal of Operational Research.

What are your doctoral students working on?Green supply chain management; logistics service quality; humanitarian logistics; competitiveness in the logistics sector.

What companies are you working with?I have informal connections with Agreliant in the US. I am likely to visit them in November and do a day’s training on quality management systems.

INSIGHTS FROM RESEARCH CLUBSCranfield Customer Management Forum - By Dr Emma Macdonald The Cranfield Customer Management Forum (CCMF) had a busy February with not one, but two practitioner events. On 12th Feb CCMF jointly hosted a world class line up alongside Cranfield’s Doughty Centre on the theme of “Nudging our customers on the sustainability journey”. Then on the 27th Feb, CCMF hosted another conference on the theme of “Winning through Customer Experience”. Speakers included a selection of the winners from the 2013 UK Customer Experience Awards who spoke about their diverse, winning strategies in optimising the customer experience. Business Performance Roundtable - By Prof Mike BourneIn February’s Business Performance Roundtable we spent a lot of time looking at examples where the use of data created actionable insight with the help of David Anker from Lightfoot Solutions and Alan Meekings from Landmark Consulting. But one of the key issues was around data. Is it good data and do we trust it? As Martin Scott of Unipart kindly reminded us, there is a quality issue and an integrity issue. More at http://bit.ly/1qOSJQW

Public Sector Performance Roundtable - By Prof Mike BourneThe latest Public Sector Performance Roundtable focused on two main areas: In the morning we looked at the role of mindfulness and its relationship with organizational performance, with Dr Jutta Tobias from Cranfield. In the afternoon we focused on a core performance management topic: How can we design and implement effective strategy maps and performance measures? Stuart Crawford from the Regulation and Quality Improvement Agency (RQIA) in Northern Ireland took us through the work that they have conducted over the past five years, looking at both technical and behavioural aspects, and stressing the importance of working across functions and linking performance measures to outcomes. Global Manufacturing Roundtable - By Prof Marek Szwejczewski The Global Manufacturing Roundtable researchers have been investigating the factors behind how manufacturers have sustained their continuous improvement initiatives. One element of the research was a survey of manufacturing operations. The survey found that the top enabler of sustaining manufacturing improvements was the overt commitment of senior management to the application of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement. This helps to embed the culture of improvement in the business and is clearly something senior management must continuously communicate in all their dealings with employees. However the research also identified several inhibitors, the top one being a persistent focus on production output targets. More at http://bit.ly/1cUtEQE

Key Account Management Best Practice Club - By Mark Davies2014 has been an exciting start to the KAM Best Practice Club! We have four new members: Office Depot, Sungard, Amey, and V-Shipping Group. Our opening Q1 event we had a dinner speaker Kami Lamakan talking about Organisational Purpose. 30 delegates attended and we are seeing these events emerging as very popular networking and talking sessions. The main day was themed “Selling & Negotiating Value.” Todd Snelgrove of SKF and Rob Maguire delivering a session they have previously used with LBS. Finally for Q1 we will be holding a SIG on 26th March themed “Lessons from Sport for Sales.” So far we have about 25 delegates signed up – this will be our best attended research session to date. More at http://bit.ly/1eSaoPk

Agile Supply Chain Research Club - By Dr Heather Skipworth Over the first Quarter of 2014, Rexam, Starbucks and HSBC have joined our existing cross sector Agile Supply Chain Research Club members and will further stimulate debate on supply chain challenges and practices. Our mid-March event focussed on supply chain risk and resilience with a stunning presentation from BMW on their state of the art proactive risk management system, spanning its vast global supply network. Early warning of possible disruptions to the supply network are made possible by geo visualisation and the continual monitoring of data on aspects such as climate and politics, enabling contingency measures to be activated. The ASCRC continues to research how highly collaborative supply chain relationships – e.g. partnerships – can deliver more value to both parties in terms of increased revenue and reduced costs and will be sharing our findings at our next event on 11th June. DOCTORAL CORE RESEARCH METHODS TRAINING PROGRAMMEBy Dr Jonathan Lupson, Director of the Research Methodology Programme

The revised core training programme for doctoral researchers is underway! Full time and part time PhD researchers now receive exactly the same training. For the PhD programme, this is delivered in eight taught weeks, with the programme spread over either one or two years according to the researcher’s mode of study. For the DBA, the training is spread over five weeks in the first year. The programme aims to provide researchers with a solid foundation for their future research, the value of which becomes quite apparent when attending conferences such as BAM! Advanced training, tailored to the specific needs of the researcher’s doctorate, will be delivered later on in the doctoral programme, usually after passing the literature review.

DOCTORAL COLLOQUIABy Dr Colin Pilbeam

Doctoral Colloquia provide an exciting opportunity for doctoral students to get feedback on their research from their peers in a friendly supportive environment. It also provides an excellent opportunity to develop presentational skills while "trying out" ideas in public. Since the beginning of the year we have had two events with six interesting presentations covering a diversity of topics from students at all stages of their doctoral journey.

In January, Richard Allen told us about his performance management research in the Charity sector, Charlotte Gascoigne explained how part-time working arrangements can be developed for managers and professionals, and Thora Thorgeirsdottir described how flexible working arrangements can impact team effectiveness.

In March, we heard from Minjie Cai (“How Do Social Connections Get You An Employee in Chinese Banks?”), Shelly Chapman (“It's Child's Play: Fun, Fantasy and Food Advergames”) and Anurag Tewari  (“Designing Robust Supply Networks : A Complex System's View")

Links to recorded presentations can be accessed at: http://bit.ly/1o6PXYt

Our next Doctoral Colloquium will be held on on 16th May – volunteer presenters welcome.

Anandadeep Mandal,Full-Time PhD ResearcherIn the Research Methods Programme, I contributed to the subject Quantitative Methods. Firstly, I held revision lectures on hypothesis testing and linear regression. Secondly, I assisted Dr Noeleen Doherty in the hands-on SPSS training. The teaching and assisting tasks were a valuable experience for me for two reasons. Firstly, it provided me with an opportunity to further work on my teaching and didactics skills. Secondly, by teaching and supporting my fellow doctoral researchers, my own knowledge on statistics has improved further. In summary, I am glad that I was given this opportunity and can only recommend it to my fellow doctoral researchers.

DOCTORAL ACTIVITIES

Shelly Chapman,Part-Time PhD ResearcherOn Friday 14 February, I had the pleasure of attending Cranfield’s Doctoral Open Day and sharing my experiences as a part-time doctoral researcher. This was a great opportunity for the prospective candidates to meet faculty members and potential supervisors with whom some discussed their research, and to chat to doctoral researchers. After lunch we took a guided tour of SoM facilities, visited the PhD room, viewed some lecture theatres and the MIRC library before heading back to CMRI. It was an extremely well organised and stimulating day where much in-depth information was provided. I felt delighted to be part of it.

ALUMNI UPDATESDBA Alumnus: Dr Gabriel Morelli(Graduated 2010) President, South Europe & Middle East at IMS Health®

Writes Gabriel, as he travels by plane to his next business meeting: “It seems like a very long time since I left the School and many exciting things have happened to me since then; probably as a consequence of the “Cranfield experience”.  I am still living in Madrid, but now travelling extensively across the South of Europe and Middle East on my new role as President of IMS Health for the region. I have to confess that I still miss the Cranfield days back in 99/00, while doing my full-time MBA and living on campus (7, Prince Phillips) and also from the six years I have spent on the DBA journey afterwards.”

We hope you’re able to join us at the DBA Alumni BBQ at Cranfield on 2nd July, Gabriel!

PhD Alumna: Prof Siri Terjesen(Graduated 2006) Assistant Professor, Kelley School of Business, Indiana University & Visiting Research Fellow, Lund University, Sweden

Siri has published 45 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Management, Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, Journal of Business Ethics, and Small Business Economics. She is on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Learning and Education and Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice. She enjoys maintaining her Cranfield ties - in the past year by meeting with Cranfield colleagues at the Academy of Management, visiting with Thoranna Jonsdottir in Iceland (DBA alum, now Dean of Reykjavik University in Iceland), and writing another paper with Ruth Sealy (PhD alum, now at City University London).

Siri and her neuroradiologist husband, Per, have three children: Tor (3½ years old), Britt, and Finn (2 year old twins).

In recognition of the value of Cranfield research and keen to continue creating great executive development content which draws on that research, senior members of the Centre for Customised Executive Development (CCED) team have initiated knowledge sharing and relationship building sessions with our doctoral researchers. The inaugural event in February has already proven to be both useful and popular and these networking lunches are set to continue during doctoral taught weeks at Cranfield. Details of these and other new ways of growing these valuable connections will follow, hopefully incorporating any ideas you have as well!?! Please contact [email protected] with comments or suggestions and we look forward to sharing more news on how we are transforming knowledge into action.
