digitality is changing newspapers. Mika: … Kallio archives March 14. Transmedia storytelling together with film dept Anu Maja. Studying how same story can be transferred between different medias. Needs funding for three doc researchers. Cross-over concept with practice and tv with virtual world and games. We could have a meeting together with these issues later. Merja: I agree. Maija: Nanna Särkkä’s project ‘Visua power’ includes Kauppalehti and Aalto University Magazine; how visual brands are organized in different platforms (internet, tablet, web…), what does it mean in different platforms and how graphic designers run this system. Nanna collects audience reactions/opinions. We use cross media platforms terms, not storytelling. That is another point of view. Merja: There are three doc students in research group who are they are experts in this. Maija: Wa are working studying how to analyze qualitative data this spring. We have to teach separately research work and analyses to researchers. We should talk what teaching is needed, about theoretical approaches. We are working same methods this spring how to make thematic classifications. Joke Hermes asked to teach one week workshop for MA students. Mika: Merja, what is your research relation to video? Merja: developing web sites, how readers use interactivity. User generated issues. Mika: is there relationship to fiction and drama? Merja: instant information, only news mainly. What users generate in web. In city area news. Company we are working with has many channels. They have a big EU project how to use open data. Mika: Cross media/new media thing interesting to continue in next seminar, to get benefit from each others’ works. In our research tv, film shooting in focus; they are changing. Lily: How to make schematic classification: I have been using “soft ontologies” Engine. This is something we could share. It could be useful for everybody. Merja: we are organizing a course how to use it?

Lily: that would be a very good thing. Lily: An Atlas course coming up. Lily: Classifying data could be anther meeting. Koray: We have tried thematic analysis. We have been hassling our experiments, how to valuate. Merja: Kennet Härmälä is an expert on SSP! Lily: I’ll show SAAB review slides (slides) We introduced sour scientific results, we showed the publications we liked the most, there is not a lot coming from graphic design or photography – next year will be different (according to Merja and Maija). The presentation had to be given in 10 minutes then 20 minutes feedback. (!the name of Merja’s group has to be corrected!). We meet SAAB group once a year, we tell what have done and they give feedback how to improve. Important that we can see what is happening elsewhere. We have to present to ourselves and then to SAAB. We have to do more of that together. We develop our (key performance indicators) kpi’s. we would continue our developing kpi’s. we don’t have to be copying disciplines. Mika: slide 15; when you have a concrete experiment it’s interesting to bring people from different fields together, crucial for the department. I like genres tools, is there a reason why we separate practice led and artistic research? Lily: we need to develop it more. We could learn from photography. There is balance to be found. We don’t have to change everything we do, but focus how to do it better. How to evaluate it, how other people will accept it better. Very clear words were that we have the artistic and design identity not to apologize, we are confident, that is the major challenge in Aalto. Koray: it is very important and expected from other parties. We have to make it clear in the beginning (artistic outcome). Merja: we call it developmental research. Artistic research is always tied to production. We have to apply some rules in research. Mika: how to get the confidence, when you have a screenwrites field, I gain respect from face to face contact. screenwriting is actually a discipline of art. Goldsmiths University cooperation interesting, a very highly respected in UK and world wide. Arian Ursu, an important person to contact. we should ask how they do things there.

Lily: EU funding in April. Mika: Could it be possible somebody to give their opinions of our presentation. to get info how they do it. Merja. Visiting their web page would give an impression how much work students have to do. Mika: they have been doing successful recruitments. Lily: two things: minutes will be sent to you. Dominic Surel gives lecture and a workshop in March. Angela dalle Vacche in May > info to come. Merja: Uhrman interested to give an lecture, info coming … Next meeting Wednesday March 14, 9:00-10:00, room 328!
