About the speaker: Dr. R. Chidambaram, is a former Director of
BARC Dr. Chidambaram has played a key role in developing the
Indian nuclear programme. He started his work on neutron
diffrac on and crystallography in 1962. He was the first to
introduce automa on for data collec on with neutron
diffractometers.
HeHe was also instrumental in introducing crystallographic
compu ng in India. He ini ated work on the design of nuclear
explosives. He was the first one to work out the equa on of state
of Plutonium. He worked on the implosion method for the
device. He ini ated shockwave research at BARC. He was also
responsible for ini a ng the development of supercomputers in
BARC.
HeHe played a leading role in the design and execu on of the
Peaceful Nuclear Explosion experiment at Pokhran (1974) and
also led the DAE team, which designed the nuclear devices and
carried out the five Pokhran tests (1998). Indian Government
acknowledged his contribu on to the successful nuclear tests by
awarding the Padma Vibushan, the Second highest civilian
honour, in 1999.

P. Sainath Ramon Magsaysay Award Winner
Born in Chennai. He is the Rural Affairs Editor of the daily newspaper, The Hindu. He started as a journalist for United Nations Organization. In 1993, he received Fellowship from the Times of India. Sainath’s most important work from the past decade focused on the agrarian crisis in India. He has travelled to close to 1 lakh kms across the country and has written a book on his experiences called ‘Everybody loves a good Drought’. He was instrumental in establishing the Agricultural Commission in Andhra Pradesh. His ideas have provoked responses that include revamping of the drought management programs in the state of Tamil Nadu.
