May discourage novice researchers

• but opportunity for improved training and support• protect researchers from research misconduct1

– e.g. fabrication of research data, fraud and misuse of research funding

• protect researchers in an increasing litigious society

Research governance

• not an option it is a requirement• it is here to stay• helps researchers in clarifying what is expected of them• ensures public accountability• highlights the need for first class training and support.
