Awards (K23) directed at thoracic surgeons in the early stages of their research careers.
The purpose of the Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (MCSDA) is to support the
development of outstanding research scientists. This mechanism provides support for clinically
trained professionals who are committed to a career in laboratory or field-based research and
have the potential to develop into independent investigators.

Amount Available: $750,000
Grant Program: TSFRE/NCI Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development
Award (K23)
The Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23) is designed to
support the training of clinically trained professionals who have made a commitment to focus on
patient-oriented research. For the purpose of this award, patient-oriented research is research
conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens, and
cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator interacts directly with human subjects. This
award may also be used to support a patient-oriented research focused career development and
research training experience in translational research. (Translational research uses knowledge of
human biology to develop and test the feasibility of cancer-relevant interventions in humans or
determines the biological basis for observations made in individuals with cancer or in
populations at risk for cancer.)

Sponsor: American Gastroenterological Association (AGA)
AGA Research Foundation
Amount Available: $85,000
Grant Program: AGA/Emmet B. Keeffe Award in Translational or Clinical Research in Liver
Disease
This award is for a young physician investigator who wishes to pursue research on the topic of
viral hepatitis, liver transplantation, or other liver disease themed areas. The objective is to
enable physician investigators to develop independent, productive research careers in
translational or clinical research related to liver disease.
The proposed research must be a clinical study, an epidemiological study, or involve converting
a basic science finding or concept into a product that can be applied to the diagnosis or treatment
of disease, thus translating it into human studies.

Sponsor: Francis Families Foundation
Amount Available: $156,000 over three years
Grant Program: Parker B. Francis Fellowship program
The fellowship is intended to support the development of outstanding investigators who plan
careers in pulmonary research. The foundation seeks to help them as they make the transition to
independent, self-supporting, faculty members. Fellowship grants are awarded to institutions for
the purpose of providing stipends, fringe benefits, and modest travel expenses in support of
qualified post-doctoral fellows or newly appointed assistant professors. Award recipients will
thereby be enabled to devote the major part of their professional effort to research related to
pulmonary disease and lung biology.

Sponsor: Whitehall Foundation, Inc. Grant Programs
Amount Available: $225,000 over three years
Grant Program: Research Grants
The Foundation, through its program of grants and grants-in-aid, assists scholarly research in the
life sciences. It is the Foundation's policy to assist those dynamic areas of basic biological
research that are not heavily supported by Federal Agencies or other foundations with
specialized missions. In order to respond to the changing environment, the Foundation
periodically reassesses the need for financial support by the various fields of biological research.
The Foundation is currently interested in basic research in neurobiology, defined as follows:
Invertebrate and vertebrate (excluding clinical) neurobiology, specifically investigations of
neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole
organism as these relate to behavior. The overall goal should be to better understand behavioral
output or brain mechanisms of behavior.
