This is my stop motion that I created for one of my previous briefs. The task was to create a stop motion that related to a physical movement or set of movements. I chose the words‘unfold’and‘tear’.Ifeltthatthesewordsrelated to origami hence the paper crane. This is one of the piece that I chose to show to this piece of work because I wanted to see the way thatpeoplerespondedtosomethingthat’sgotquite a simple meaning and a easy technique.

“Shakedown - Love Game” animation created by Baptiste Jaquemet, 2010.

I looked through a lot of different videos from all three books that we were asked to look at but in the end I decided to focus onabookcalled‘MotionBlur2’.Idecidedtofocusonthisbookmore than the others because of the style, it seemed more modern and suited my personal taste more. As you can see this video that I have picked it quite graphic at points but this is why I chose it. I also chose it because the style and the story kind of contrasted in the sense that cartoons are usually for children and therefore they are clean. However this story of this couple and how their relationship progressed and then comes crashing down is perhaps too realistic, unlike childrens stories.

idea: film the people as they watch/look on each piece of work – do it secretly maybe so that they don’t feel shy and it’s a more

reliable response <<< do a little collage of peoples reactions, maybe see if i can film on laptop secretly.

then record peoples voices on their thoughts – so that this is completely reliable.

maybe even do an animation of written notes to what some people think.

film their body language as they talk. <<<

This shows some of the preparation that I did before hand. On the top left is a draft of the questions that I could potentially ask participants and below that is the actual questions that I asked them and also a bit of my thinking of what way I could record this information. Above is myrecordingofSams’answerstothequestionsthatIaskedhimoverskype.Ididn’trecordhisinterviewbyvideobecauseIfeltthatusingskypemaymakeitdifficulttohearhisanswersbecausehismicrophonewasn’tthatgreat.

Here is a little animation thatIcreatedtoshowSams’answers in what I hoped would be a visually interesting. The way I created it makes it looks like someone is writing it. I also experimented a bit at the beginning with my own voiceoveralittleGIFfilethatIfound on tumblr and recreated to work with my voice.

Here are a few screenshots of another video that I did. This is where I interviewed my friends. I kept them in a setting they were comfortable in,hencewhyJoshissmoking.IalsothoughtI’dfocusontheirbodyreactions whilst i talked to them and I let them know this so they wouldn’tbetoselfconciousinfrontofthecamera.

EVALUATION

I also created another video which focused on the reactions that I got frommyparticipants.I’veincludedclipsfrombothvideosthatIgotthem to watch so you can see where they reacted roughly and follow it a bit more.

Ivideo’edmostpeoplebutbecauseIwasabitshortonpeopleIdecidedtotrydoinganinterviewoverskype.Ivideo’edmyfriends’reactions over skype and then asked him to write down the answers so that i had a bit of a variation as well. I only did this once because I wouldn’tsureifit’dworkornot.Firstly, I chose 20 questions that I could ask people from a list of random questions that we made in groups. I found how to gather the informationabitdifficultbecauseIwasntsurehowtopresentitlateron. I came up with a few ideas on what I could look at it and what to focus on. In the end I chose to look at peoples body language and reactions. My own video that I chose to use was my stop motion from brief 4 and myothervideoIchosewas‘LoveGame-Shakedown’fromthebookmotion blur 2, I chose this one because of the sex scenes and because I thought I could get a variety of different reactions from people, especially from this video in particular. I also thought that these 2 videos that I had picked contrasted quite alot in the different techniques usedandalsothestoriesineachvideoIwasn’tabletogetallthepeoplethatIwantedtoget,soIthinknexttimeI’llgivepeoplemorenotice before hand and plan myself out better.OverallI’mquitepleasedwithhowmyvideosturnedoutbecauseIfeelthatIdidwhatIhadsetouttodowhichwastofindoutthewaypeopleresponded to these pieces of work.

This is my research for brief 9. After focusing on body reactions and facial expressions in breif 5 I chose to look at what shocks people most nowadays. For this I brainstormed what I thought could shock people and from this I then went onto look at images online that I found intersting, disturbing or shocking. I picked a variety of images thinking that different things shock different people, so I kept an open mind at this point. I then came up with a couple of questions that I could ask a few different people and also thought of dif-ferent ways that I could show this information and gather it. These included graphs, videos, written words, surveys and photos. In the end I chose to just ask people and they could answer in their own time - this meant that I could get some longer answers which meant a deeper insight into their thinking.

I chose to present their answers as illustrations and written words. Here I gatheredpicturesfrommypaticipantsfacebookprofilesandredrewthemsothat it suited the style that I was aiming for. Also below are the images i chose to use. I chose these particular images because I felt they all differed from each other but were equally intense.

The responses that I got from various people varied however what did surprise me was that with the girls, thesameimageseemedtoshockthemboth.Idon’tknow whether this is down to maternal instincts or each persons personality. On the other hand the boys were all shocked by different images. This shows me that what is considered to be shocking varies on the person and also that we have desensitized to alot of thingsthatwewould’vefoundshocking50yearsago.OverallI’mquitehappywithhowIhavepresentedmyresearchbecauseit’svisuallyinterestingandifoundthesubjectitselfquiteinteresting.HoweverIwould’veliked to have seen each participants reaction to the imageswhentheyfirstsawthembecauseIfeelthatitwould’vebeeninterestingandalsomaybegivenme a different answer to the ones that they put down becausetheparticipantswouldn’thavehadthetimeto look deeper into the pictures and what they are.

Overall I have managed to show my research in a variety of ways, including animation, videoandillustration.I’dalsosaythat I have gathered qualitative research rather than quantative, although for some questionsmyparticipantsdidn’tunderstandthe questions sometimes which made it hard for them to answer. This is something thatI’dneedtoworkoninfuture.AlsosomethingelseI’dconsiderdoingitperhapsgathering more quantative research than qualitative to see how that differs from what I’vedonehere.
