    ThisisacomicstripofCaptainhurricane(196)fromtheCartoonMuseum.Hesetthe

    toneforvaliantonthecoverofthefirstissuein1962.ItisunknownwhothearNstis

    howeverseveralarNstsdrewthestripincludingtheItalianarNstAlbertoGioliQ.

    CaptainHurricaneisdescribedasthetoughestfighNngmaninworldWar2.Thisisa

    gratereferencetowardsoneofmycharacterashealsoworksintheforce.Captain

    Hurricaneisastrong,bravecharacterthatenjoyswhathedoes,butatthesameNme

    takeshisjobtoseriously.Althoughmycharacterisabadcop,hesNllgetshisjobdone

    andwillhavesimilarphysicalappearance.

    Thissceneisfromthefilmlockout(212).ThebeginningsceneIsafunnybutmoreviolentinterrogaNonscene.Themoodof

    thecharacterconstantlychangedduringtheinterrogaNon,unlikeothersthere'slaughter,sarcasm,duringtheviolentinterrogaNonscene.

    Inthisscenethereisaboss,avicNmandtheinterrogator.ThebosswillaskaquesNon,thevicNmwillgivearesponsebutnottheoneheintendedtohear.Theresponseare

    funnyjokestowardstheboss.ThisshowsbraverytowardthevicNmandwitheveryjockeyresponse,hegetspunchedintheface.

    FromwatchingthisfilmitgavemetheideatohaveafunnyinterrogaNonsceneformy

    fmp.Howevermyfilmwontbelikethis.Itwillbemorefunny,moreviolentandmuch

    moreofatwist.ThecharacterIwillusedwillhaveverystrongfacialexpressions.Ashewill

    gothroughsomanyemoNons:laughing,crying,ext.

    Thissceneisfromthemovieamusement.AlthoughthisIsahorrormovie,Iwasmore

    interestedinthedesignoftheroom.Ilikethefactthereisonlyonelightandthatsinthe

    middle.

    IreferencethedesignoftheroomwithmyinterrogaNonroom,butwithlotsof

    adjustment.Imadethelighthangdownfromtheceilingmoreinmysceneandmadethe

    see-throughglassmuchwider.AswellasadjusNngthesizeoftheroomIalsoadded

    moreequipment'sintheroom:TV,ImaydecideifaCCTVcameraisgoingtobeplayedin

    thesceneandalsoaddedaphonebox.

    ThisscenefromAmericanDadisagrateexampleofaninterrogaNonscenethatisreally

    short,yetsofunny.Roger(theAlien)isoneofmyfavouritecartooncharacters.Inthis

    episodeheplaysabadcop,inwhichhehasanoverconfidentpersonalitybutatthesame

    Nmeverycalmandamusing.

    Inthisclipheistalkingverygentlyandthensuddenly,ashistoneofhisvoicegethigherhe

    karatekickstheprisoner.Hethentalkscalmlyagain.Thesuddenimpactwithanunusualway

    ofinterrogaNngsomeonemadethissceneveryamusingtowatch.Toaddabitofhumourto

    it,itisapoliceofficerthatisdoingtheinterrogaNng.

    HerearejustfewofmanycharactersthatIenjoywatching.Thesecharactersmake

    melaugh,allfordifferentreasons.Fromtheirphysicalappearance,totheir

    personaliNes,everythinkaboutthemmakesthemengagedwiththeaudience

    perfectly.

    Iwantareallycartoonishlooktowardsmytwocharacters,andpersonalityisnottoodifferentbetweenthesecharacters.

    Ilookedatdifferentplugins/scriptsforMaya,andfoundthesethreeplugins.Iwaslookingfor

    differentwaysoncreaNngrealhairinMaya,thistoensurethereissomesecondaryacNon

    duringtheanimaNon.Ialsolookedatadvancerigging.

    SoIplantousetherapidRigscripttocreatemyrig.Iusedthebasiconeanditisverysimple,

    easytomake.IhadalotoffunusingrapidRiganditwouldsavemealotofNme.Improbably

    goingtousetheadvanceversionbecauseitgivesyoumoreopNons.

    TheArdoldplugingivesyoumoreopNonsinMayaonsomanydifferentaspects:shading,

    rendering,hair.Iwasmoreinterestedinthehair,buttheonlydownsideis,itdoesslowthe

    animaNondownalot.

    IprefertheShaveandahaircutplugin.Hereyouhavemorecontroloverthehairyoucreate

    andgivesyoulotsofopNons.

    Designprocess

    Ifirststartedoutwithsilhoue_es:firsttheHeadshapethen

    thebody.HereImexperimenNngwiththeshapeofbothmycharactersasIamgoingforacartoonishlook.Thecharacters

    profileshouldmatchitsappearance.Oneofmycharacterisa

    big,muscularpoliceofficerandtheotheranoverconfident,

    funnyandabitdeludedtypeofcharacter.Sothesize,shape

    ofthecharacterwillbeimportantandhelpsetthemoodof

    thestory.

    Ithenstartedtodrawatthecharactersindifferentposesas

    wellasfiningthebestshapeforthem:weatherasmall

    characterwithahugeheardoranordinarysizecharacter

    withafunnylookinghead(cartoonishlook).

    ThecharacterintheleisgoingtobethevicNm.Howeverthischaracterwebemoreappealingbecauseofhispersonalityandwhathesays.Hesaveryamusingcharacterthatwillalwaysgive

    funnyresponse.

    IfeelifIputboththesetypeofcharactersinoneroom,theirpersonalitywillcollidewithone

    otherandcreateafunnyscene.

    HereisanideaonhowIcouldstartoftheanimaNon.Inthebeginningitcouldstartofwitha

    reallyfunnyjoke.TheinterviewwillaskaquesNonandtheresponsewillbeanofftopic

    responseaswellasdoingacomicalpose.

    Iindenttomaketheaudiencelaughfromthebeginning.Thiswillgrabtheaudience

    a_enNonfromthestarttotheend.

    ThenextsceneIplantoshowthebeginningcredits.Itwillbewri_eninthebackofthechair,

    duringtheanimaNon.

    SostraightaerthefirstjokethenameoftheanimaNonwillbeplayed,asthecameragoesdowntothebackofthechair.Fromthissceneonwardsthetwocharacterswillinteract

    more,withfunnyjokes/acNoninwhichifIwanttodevelopthisidea,therewillhavetobea

    comicaldialogedbetweenthecharactersandhavetobedevelopedbeforethestoryboard.

    Herearetwonecklaces,butcouldbea_ached

    asone.Thesenecklacesareheavilyinvolvein

    whythereisaninterrogaNonscene.Oneofthenecklacebelongstothepolice

    officer,ashewillwhereitalltheNmeandthe

    otherinajewellerystore.Sothecharacters

    thatsgoingtobeinterrogatedstolethe

    necklacefromthejewellerystore(thiswillbe

    menNonedduringtheanimaNon),buthis

    intenNonwastopurposelygetcaught,inorder

    togettheothernecklaces.Asthischaracteris

    afunny,clever,conarNsttypeofcharacter,heknewwhathewasgeQnghimselfinto.He

    knewwhowillinterviewhim,andwhattypeof

    policeofficerhereallyis.

    Withhisconfidentpersonalityheknewhewas

    goingtoleavewiththetwonecklaces.This

    peaceofanimaNonwillbeunpredictableand

    willshowacleverideaonhowoneofthe

    charactersmanagetogetthenecklaces.

    IhadthisideaofusingdominoesinmyanimaNon,

    aspartofanideatogetthenecklaces.

    WhilemycharacterisgeQnginterrogated,hewill

    lookataclock,itwillthenfadein/outtoa

    basementwhereyouwillseean

    alarmclock.Thealarmclockwillthenringandthatwillmakethefirstdominofall.Indoing

    so,allthedominoeswillkeepfallingandformingpatens.Thecamerawillalsocutbackto

    themaininterrogaNonscenewhilethedominoesarefalling.Ifeelthiswillcreatesuspensethroughoutandthefinaloutcomeofthelastdominofallingwilleffectthefinal

    outcomeoftheinterrogaNonscene:whenthelastonefallsdownitwilllightupacannon

    ball,thatwillshootthroughthewallintotheskyandlandintheinterrogaNonscene.

    Smokewillberealistasoneofmycharacterholdshisbreathwhilethepoliceofficerfaints.

    Whenthesmokeclearsmycharacterwilltakethetwonecklacesandleaves,butcomes

    backquicklyandtakesthepoliceswallet.Asheleaveshewillbelimping,thisisduetothe

    violentbutfunnyinterrogaNonhejustbeenthrough.Ifeelthislastscenewillbehilarious

    andshouldbringanendtothefilmnicely.

    AnimaNontest

    HereIcreatedacharacterandarig.ImexperimenNngwithfacialriggingand

    tryingoutthebestwaytoanimatethefaceaswellaslearningZbrush.

    IfirstexperimentwithwiredeformersInMaya.AerwatchinglotsoftutorialI

    mangeIaddwiredeformersonthischaracter.Iuseditonthelipsandthe

    eyebrows.Itiswhereyouusesclusterstomove/bendthewirestoanimatethe

    face.

    TheothertechniqueIwasusingisjointstoanimatetheface.Iplacedlotsofjoints

    aroundtheface,thenaddedinfluencestothecharacter.Howeverwiththis

    methodsittookareallylongNme,asIhadtoweightpaintlotsofthejoints.ThePstandsforPhonemesinwhichIalsousedblendshapeforlip-synctomakeitmore

    simplewhenanimaNngtheface.Howeveritfailedtoworkwiththisrig,asItested

    itatthebeginninganditseemtoworkfine.Ididalotofthingsin-betweenand

    somethingdownthelinemayhavecauseditnottoworkproperly(Iknowthe

    soluNonbutitfaildowork).

    TheproblemIhadwiththischaracterisIaddedtwodifferenttypesofinfluencesin

    thesamemesh(onthesameverNces),inwhichthepaintskinweightsforthejaw

    hadtobechanged.ThiscausedmealotsofproblemssoIlaterdeletedthewire

    deformersandanimatedwithjusttheinfluencesofthejoints.IlikedallthedifferentmethodsIwasusingonthis.ThatswhyImgoingtouseall

    ofthemforthisproject.Thewiredeformerswillbeusedforthelipandeyebrows.

    Thejointswillbeusedfortheeyes,cheeks,ext.AlsoIllcreatedifferent

    blendshapestogivememoreopNons.

    SooverallImpleasedIhaveexperimentedwithriggingaswellasanimaNng.This

    helpedmeprepareforthisideaaswellaslearningdifferenttechniques.

    HereImreferencingthebeginningscenefromthefilmLockout.IwantedtoexperimentwiththefacialrigIcreatedandpracNceanimaNonmore.

    ThetoppartisdifferentplayblaststepsItookonmakingthis.umber1isI

    animatedjustthekeyposesoftheheadmoving.umber2isIanimatedthe

    keyposesforthelip-syncandtheeyebrows.3ischangingthekeyframesto

    linear.Andfinallynumber4isaddingin-betweensandcleaningupthe

    animaNonmore.

    Thebo_ompartisfinalversionasthereferencevideoisonetheleandmy

    finalrenderisontheright.ItwasquitefunanimaNngwiththejointsonthe

    faceandIampleadedwiththefinaloutcome,althoughlotsofmistakes

    wheremadeduringthedevelopment.

    Icouldtakealotonboardfromthis,aswhenIstarttheanimaNngfromthe

    upcomingproject.Imadealotofmistakesfromthis:typologymistakesin

    Zbrush,facialrigs,weightpainNnginMaya(lotsoferrorsduringweight

    painNng).SooverallI'mgladImadethesemistakesnowsolateronIcould

    ovoidthem.
