Northumbria University is one of the largest and most successful universities in the UK. We place research at the very core of our academic community.

Research is what is so very special about a University, and at Northumbria we pride ourselves particularly on research that makes a difference; research that has application and affects people’s lives, as well as on driving forward new knowledge and understanding across all our disciplines. Research excellence is at the heart of Vision 2025, the ambitious and imaginative programme that sets out the University’s intended development over the coming years.

Postgraduate students are a vitally important part of our research landscape. With over 500 students studying for research degrees (MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate) across the University, we have a vibrant community of postgraduate researchers, supported by excellent facilities in the Graduate School, which oversees all aspects of postgraduate research programmes and provides resources to support them.

Northumbria has invested signifi cantly to improve support for postgraduate study, with dedicated high quality spaces and facilities available throughout the University. Financial support for postgraduate study comes from a number of sources, including Northumbria’s own research studentship scheme, UK Research Councils, and external sponsors. Details of current opportunities can be found on the website (www.northumbria.ac.uk/researchstudentships).

Opportunities for postgraduate research are available in all parts of the University, with supervision provided by acknowledged experts.

In the last national Research Assessment Exercise, more than two thirds of our research was judged to be of international standard, with almost half of this assessed as excellent or outstanding. We have invested further to build and strengthen our research base, through the appointment of new, research active, academic staff.

Associated with these staff will be an exciting number of additional new opportunities for postgraduate study.

In this brochure we have brought together the range of postgraduate research opportunities across the University.

I do hope you will fi nd something here that whets your appetite for study at Northumbria, and would be delighted if you were to contact us to discuss what would suit you best.

Types of Degree Northumbria offers several research degree programmes. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Professional Doctorate degree are designed to develop research and enquiry skills to the highest level, and to advance career opportunities through enhancing academic and professional development.

The PhD programme allows students to undertake an individual programme of research development that will enable original research to doctoral level in their chosen fi eld of study, which in some areas also includes practice-led research.

The Professional Doctorate degree is equivalent in standing to a PhD, but with a clear focus on developing and improving professional skills and practice, it is the logical choice for experienced professionals who wish to continue their lifelong learning.

Northumbria also offers the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) to students. In addition, staff or alumni may also register for a PhD by Published Work.

Programme Structure Usually a research degree will involve a programme of active research typically three years full-time or fi ve years part-time, with the support of a supervisory team. This will include a period of data collection and analysis, followed by writing-up research in the form of a thesis or portfolio. Students will be expected to pass through annual progression points that provide a clear structure to each programme. Following submission of the thesis or portfolio, each student will undertake an oral examination, known as a viva voce, conducted by specialists in the fi eld.

Northumbria University has an excellent record in Postgraduate Research across a wide range of academic disciplines.

Since the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) judged Northumbria to be ‘world leading’ in nine out of 12 subject areas,

the University has appointed almost 100 new research active, senior academic staff with the goal of delivering high-quality

research-informed teaching.

In addition we have invested in a high-quality research environment with enhanced training, development and career opportunities

for all staff and students, embedding the ethos of academic enquiry and knowledge creation to ensure we build on our current successes

and achieve our long-term goals.

Initial Enquiries Applications are assessed based upon academic excellence and other relevant experience, and how closely the research proposal aligns with Northumbria’s key research areas. Before applying, you should contact us to make an initial enquiry. This is so we can put you in contact with academic and administrative staff in the appropriate subject area that can provide advice and support prior to a formal application. Visit www.northumbria.ac.uk/pgrapply for further information and follow the ‘Enquire now’ link. If you have any questions relating to the programme content, you will be offered the chance to discuss them with a member of our research staff once you have submitted your enquiry.

Application Following your enquiry you may be invited to submit the following:

• Anapplicationform

• Evidenceofacademicqualifications

• EvidenceofEnglishlanguageproficiencyforapplicants whose fi rst language is not English

• Aresearchproposaloutliningyourareaofresearch. Research staff will be able to provide further advice. In some cases, applicants are invited to apply to a specifi c research vacancy with a predefi ned research proposal. In some cases funded studentships may be associated with the vacancy – visit www.northumbria.ac.uk/researchstudentships for more information.

A research administrator will provide the appropriate link to complete your application and submit your proposal and supporting documents online.

Entry Requirements Usually applicants are expected to have at least an upper second class Honours degree (UK) or equivalent from an overseas university, or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline. Applicants who do not hold these qualifi cations must demonstrate equivalent intellectual competence possibly referenced by appropriate experience to the satisfaction of the relevant University committee.

Applicants whose fi rst language is not English, will need to meet our minimum scores for research programmes and the minimum component scores for degree level and above courses. If you do not have the correct level of English language profi ciency, Northumbria also offer pre-sessional English programmes throughout the year. For further details regarding our minimum English language requirements and English programmes visit www.northumbria.ac.uk/pgrapply

Applicants to Professional Doctorates programmes should note that in some cases, 150 credits of advanced standing may be awarded against their existing Masters qualifi cation, where the applicant has appropriate experience of practice in line with the University Professional Doctorate Framework and/or evidence of appropriate continuous professional development.

What Happens Next? Provided applicants satisfy our entry requirements and the research proposal aligns with Northumbria’s research areas, applicants will be required to undertake an interview. This may be conducted on a face-to-face basis, by telephone or by video conferencing.

A successful interview will normally result in referees being contacted and if satisfactory references are obtained, an offer is usually made in writing.

Applications can be made for research study at any time of the year, normally to commence at the start of the academic year or calendar

year. Pages 26-69 provide an introduction to the research areas offered at Northumbria, in subject groupings and as described

by students, staff and graduates.

Supervisor Support An integral support mechanism for research students is their relationship with their supervision team. Supervisors provide subject expertise and research experience, and support the intellectual and personal development of the student with advice and direction. The Graduate School provides training and guidance to all supervisors to ensure that all students receive appropriate supervision. All research students are supervised by a team of supervisors, put into place early in the research programme. The Principal Supervisor meets or makes contact with the student at least once per month, and the full supervision team meets with the student at least every six months, including a meeting to review progress annually. In addition, informal meetings between the student and their supervisors take place to facilitate progress.

Championing Postgraduate Research Engagement, Impact and Dissemination A key feature of academic culture at Northumbria is to ensure that your research is heard, and we offer a number of schemes to encourage research students to disseminate their research.

These include bursaries to support students in attending conferences to present their work. Support is also available for students to run their own conference or symposium aimed at an academic audience. In 2012 students organised several workshops at Northumbria including The Researcher and the Researched, in partnership with the British Sociological Association, as well as hosting PSYPAG 2012 a national conference for psychology postgraduates.

Engaging the public with research is also a key focus of Northumbria, and financial and professional support is available to students who wish to engage with the public. Training is on offer to support students through the process. Through the Graduate School scheme, students have successfully run research events for the public at the Lit and Phil Library in Newcastle (the largest independent library in the UK outside of London) and at various National Trust venues across the region.

Each year, as part of Northumbria’s commitment to research, we showcase the research that takes place across the University by celebrating it during a two day conference. Research students are invited to submit posters for the conference, and this provides a springboard to visit discipline specific conferences.

Supporting the Research Student Experience Undertaking a research degree is a unique and challenging experience, and for several years, the Graduate School has provided feedback mechanisms for students, in order to monitor the quality of the research student experience and identify areas for further improvement.

Since 2008, Northumbria has participated in the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES), a national survey administered by the Higher Education Academy. Northumbria’s PRES results are positive in all areas. All show an upward trend across the three most recent

surveys conducted in 2008, 2009 and 2011, including areas that were already high scoring, such as supervision and skills development. Some of the largest score improvements related to the research environment, teaching opportunities, and professional development and career opportunities.

The Graduate School and the Students’ Union also operate the Postgraduate Research Representatives system, ensuring that students’ opinions are represented at key research committees and development groups.

Northumbria University was awarded the HR Excellence in Research Award from the European Commission in January 2013. The Award demonstrates a university’s commitment to improving the working conditions and career development for researchers, which will in turn improve the quantity, quality and impact of research for the benefit of UK society and the economy.

Northumbria’s Action Plan to implement the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and compliance with the UK Quality Assurance Agency’s Code of Practice for Research Degree Programmes are factors in receiving the Award.

Newcastle’s art and culture scene has become one of its defining characteristics. Northumbria University has an award-winning partnership with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, which hosted the prestigious Turner Prize, and together they opened a new cultural hub for art, BALTIC 39. BALTIC has a diverse range of exhibitions from world-leading artists on display all year round which shouldn’t be missed if you love modern art.

The Biscuit Factory, Laing Art Gallery and The University Gallery are also well worth a visit. There is plenty of choice for theatre-goers in Newcastle with the historic Theatre Royal, Live Theatre and Northern Stage.

For the latest films, there’s a multiscreen Empire Cinema and Odeon nearby, but when it comes to charm, the beautifully restored art deco Tyneside Cinema takes some beating. Music lovers are equally well-catered for with the Metro Radio Arena and the 02 Academy attracting all the big names.

Then there’s The Sage Gateshead, a concert venue that’s also a beautiful piece of modern architecture and centre for music education. Grainger Town, the historic heart of Newcastle, includes more than 200 listed buildings. It is home to Grey Street, which has been voted the third most beautiful street in the UK (Academy of Urbanism Awards). Antony Gormley’s iconic Angel of the North watches over the region, while there are also a host of picturesque parks to explore, from Jesmond Dene and Leazes Park in

Newcastle to the award-winning Saltwell Park in Gateshead.

When it comes to shopping, Newcastle has something for everyone, from big chain stores in Eldon Square and Northumberland Street to the quirky, independent shops and cafés of High Bridge. If this wasn’t enough, the Metrocentre is just a ten minute bus ride away in Gateshead, with a further 340 stores, restaurants, cafés, and a 12-screen Odeon IMAX cinema.

Sports fans will also feel at home in the North East with famous football, rugby, cricket and basketball teams based in the region, and St James’ Park, the home of Newcastle United FC, just minutes from the University.

Newcastle is vibrant and friendly, modern and clean, safe and compact, with the culture, nightlife, people, history, sport and architecture to rival any city in the world. It’s big enough to keep finding new places to explore, but small enough to walk around.

If you want a break from city life you’ll find beautiful coastlines and the breathtaking Northumberland countryside, filled with castles, stately homes and historic landmarks such as Hadrian’s Wall just a short bus or Metro journey away.

BioReC also has many well established links with UK and international companies. In the recent research output evaluation, 30% of BioReC publications were scored as being world-leading in terms of originality, signifi cance and rigour (equivalent to the top scores of 3* and 4* using the Research Assessment Exercise scoring system).

Forensic Science

Northumbria University Centre for Forensic Science (NUCFS) was established in 2010 with a clear and ambitious mandate to provide investigators, scientists and policy makers with analysis and insight into practice and ethics in the use of science in the Criminal Justice System. Its interests encompass basic science, forensic science, and social studies of policy and practice in forensic science and the related domains of public health and safety, and human rights.

Postgraduates interested in scientifi c and sociological dimensions of forensic science and medicine are strongly encouraged to pursue research with the Centre.

The Centre is a catalyst for interdisciplinary research with regional, national and international partners and benefi ts from links with academic colleagues in Europe, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Singapore and the United States.

Members of the Centre have worked with leading organisations in the sector in the UK and overseas and have participated in a number of human rights abuse and disaster victim identifi cation deployments.

Northumbria’s research in Applied Sciences has an excellent and growing reputation. Staff and research students are actively

Katherine Stapleton PhD student

I’m about to enter the final year of my PhD. Analytical chemistry is a field that has an enormous number of applications. It’s also all about problem-solving: how do I measure this particular compound from this complicated sample?

My research is sponsored by Procter & Gamble (P&G), with a focus on the measurement of odours (both pleasant and unpleasant) associated with laundry using different techniques. I’ve been fortunate in the multitude of resources that have been provided, both by Northumbria and P&G. I’ve had the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time in the labs at P&G, in addition to working in the University. The close relationship with P&G has meant that I have gained industry experience while studying, which is something that I never had the chance to do as an undergraduate.

Undertaking a PhD has definitely proven challenging in a variety of ways, not just academically. I have developed skills beyond those that are required for the practical aspects of my research. Postgraduate study is almost as much about the individual as it is about the research project. A lot of research is about data management, prioritising one’s time effectively and figuring out what to do next.

New technologies are paramount in our work; for example, the use of virtual reality, building information modelling, computer simulation, and digital geospatial information and we undertake collaborative work with other disciplines such as cognitive science, physics, sociology, economics, and informatics.

PhD ApplicantsWith such a broad range of research interests we are able to supervise Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes in a wide range of subjects, no matter what your area of interest. Our activities in this area include:

Architecture and Urban Design research work includes the evaluation of completed buildings and its feedback into the design process. The urban design work has been based on the analysis of cities as combinations of space and buildings.

Community and Social Resilience research considers the role of social capital and networks in nurturing resilience, with exclusionary and inclusionary mechanisms, gender, ethnicity, physical and mental wellbeing, and security.

Geographic Information Science research links closely with 3D Modelling to understand the space time movements of people. It looks at the effect of the built, natural and social environments on physical activity, healthy living and active transport.

Real Estate and Development Economics research includes all aspects of the development cycle including land pricing, valuation and the management of development risk.

Urban Regeneration research involves investigation into structures to deliver an urban renaissance and the impact of urban regeneration on property markets, including the evaluation of community land trusts and other mechanisms to address the barriers to affordable housing.

Research Profi leArchitecture and Built Environment is a department within the Faculty of Engineering and Environment. Within the Architecture and Built Environment submission of the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 100% was rated as ‘nationally signifi cant’; of which 90% was recognised as ‘internationally recognised’, ‘internationally signifi cant’, or ‘world-leading’. Since then we have continued growing our numbers of research active staff and students and will make a submission in the Architecture and Built Environment category in the Research Excellence Framework 2014.

FacilitiesThere is a research hub where professors, researchers, research support teams and postgraduate students work in an open and well-equipped environment. A nearby virtual environment suite is staffed by specialists in the application of virtual reality and digital

Architecture and Built Environment at Northumbria University encompasses all of our work in architecture, surveying, estate planning

and management, real estate and housing policy and management. Our academic staff are highly active in research and innovation,

winning research contracts, writing authoritative reports, publishing in leading academic journals and organising research conferences and

seminars, frequently involving an international platform.

technologies. The Building Information Modelling (BIM) Academy supports all construction disciplines in embracing collaborative working practices through the effective application of building modelling. The Usability of Spatial Environments laboratory explores human responses to virtually constructed architectural and urban spaces.

There are further laboratories and test areas for sensory analysis, plant growth, geothermal energy, materials testing, laser scanning, energy simulation and building modelling, as well as traditional and computer-aided model-building workshops and an impressive number of computer stations and PC laboratories for both individual access and more formal work. There is a rolling programme of facility

and equipment refurbishment to ensure optimal access to resources.

Partnerships Collaboration with national and international universities, professional bodies and public and private sector organisations is key to our success. We regularly provide consultation to a variety of organisations and have successful partnerships with organisations such as the BIM Academy, architectural consultancies and Virtual NewcastleGateshead. Short courses, professional accreditation, employer feedback meetings and conferences all feed back into the knowledge and experience of our academic staff, which is then used to advise research students.

I fi nished my undergrad and masters degrees in Egypt and, as an Egyptian/British student I was looking to come back to England for my PhD research. My research area relates to environmental engineering, a fi eld in which Northumbria is excelling. I am currently working under an EU project called (E-mobility). In recent years, this topic has gained signifi cance as it is a part of the international call to promote the use of low carbon emissions vehicles.

The postgraduate community at Northumbria is brilliant. In the fi rst few months we had induction sessions, training courses and I met several students who were researching in the same subject area. It helped me understand the whole PhD process and I learned and developed different skills needed for completing this three years research.

Studying for a PhD has taught me a lot; academically and otherwise. I’ve gained self-confi dence and knowledge; my research techniques have dramatically improved and I’ve had the opportunity to meet lots of people with similar interests. I have also enjoyed attending conferences.

Postgraduate research within the Department is broadly characterised by in-depth engagement with the complexity and diversity of ‘culture’ in a variety of social and historical contexts. This ranges from creative practice to the histories of art, design, fi lm and television, urban and popular cultures, cultural institutions and the signifi cance of culture in the formation of identities.

A distinctive feature of our PGR provision is the practice-led PhD. This provides an opportunity for students to build a research programme around their own creative practice in fi ne art, performance and photography.

The University and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art have recently come together to create an Institute for Contemporary Art. The Institute is directed by a BALTIC Professor who, along with other staff in Fine Art provides world class learning and mentorship in Contemporary Art PhD research, and works with BALTIC’s Learning and Engagement Team to offer a rich and diverse events programme and encourage wider participation in visual art. Located in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, a vibrant city with a fl ourishing visual and performing arts scene and home to numerous creative and cultural venues, the aim of the Institute and of the wider Department is to make a difference to the artistic and cultural landscape through excellence in learning and teaching, student support, dedicated research and scholarly activity, refl ective professional practice, knowledge exchange and enterprise.

PhD AreasStaff research expertise in conservation, cultural management, fi lm studies, art history and fi ne art underpins a dynamic postgraduate cohort.

A number of students are funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and several are recipients of University studentships.

Examples of some current PhDs include: ‘Are you Engaged? (Re)Addressing Notions of Participation in Contemporary Performance Practice’, ‘States of Transcience: Drawing and Museology’ and ‘Intermediality in Contemporary American Independent Cinema’.

Professional Doctorate in ArtsThis programme of study for experienced and innovative practitioners working in the arts, media and cultural sectors offers an opportunity to gain a doctorate grounded in professional practice in:

• ArtsConservation

• CollectionsandCuratingStudies

• CulturalManagement

• MediaPractices

The Professional Doctorate is the ideal choice for professionals working as collections’ managers, policy-makers and curators (museum, archive, art gallery, heritage); cultural managers, arts and exhibition organisers; conservation managers, researchers and practitioners of art, architecture, design and heritage; and media managers, researchers and producers.

Studying for a Doctorate in Arts enables the individual to deepen their knowledge within their professions and to develop and to consolidate insights gained through prior experience or study. It affords time to pause, refl ect and scrutinise important initiatives and developments in the arts, media and cultural sectors. At a personal level, it enhances professional practice through original research that has relevance to contemporary arts, media and culture industries.

It also allows for the development of research knowledge and transferable skills through independent scholarship while remaining fi rmly grounded in professional activity.

The Department of Arts at Northumbria is a leading centre for supporting and energising creative practice and academic study,

informed by cultural partnerships and inter-disciplinary collaborations and through national and international networks.

I am a Reader in art history and visual culture in the Department of Arts, and postgraduate co-ordinator. My specifi c research is in areas of early twentieth century visual culture in Britain, but my teaching also extends into contemporary fi ne art and design history.

I’ve supervised several PhDs concerned with early twentieth century art as well as subjects relating to northern landscapes and environment in contemporary photography and fi ne art. One of my current students is working on the sociological poetics of participation in art and another on the relationship between visual culture and walking.

There are many rewarding aspects to my work, the most signifi cant being the end of a successful viva. When supervising PhDs I also enjoy the conversations that develop throughout the research process and being challenged to think in different ways through the new insights that students bring to their subjects.

There is an excellent support structure for postgraduate students in the Department. All benefi t from the shared culture of the staff and postgraduate student research seminar series, conferences and training sessions. Jane Turner Associate Dean and DBL student

“I am studying on the Doctor of Business Leadership (DBL) programme at Newcastle Business School. I am also an Associate Dean working with senior leaders in relation to their professional development. I completed a Masters programme at the Business School ten years ago. In the intervening period I moved from the corporate world and entered academia.

Having entered academia from the private sector, I was looking for a doctoral approach that did not lose sight of the practitioner perspective. As a leadership development specialist, I was delighted when the Doctorate in Business Leadership at Newcastle Business School was approved and I became the fi rst student to enrol on the programme.

We are all acutely aware of the impact leaders have in the political, corporate and social arenas and I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to explore ‘leadership’ through this particular doctoral programme. The experience to date has been engaging, challenging and exciting.

The teaching blocks are thought provoking and highly developmental and we are exposed to leading experts in their respective fi elds. The academic and administrative support network is superb and having just had my formal research approved I am about to submit my fi nal thesis and have found this to be a profound learning journey.”

The DBA concentrates on application to the workplace. Based on sound philosophical and methodological foundations the thesis normally addresses an issue of practical importance. Also required is a strong element of self-refl ection on your own practice and journey of development.

The DBA recognises previous Masters level study and professional experience allowing completion of the doctoral qualifi cation in two years (full-time) or three years (part-time). The taught stage begins with an Advanced Business Research module,

which is delivered in two blocks, each of one week duration. The combination of structured lectures, workshops, directed learning activities, group work and seminar presentations places emphasis on creative student-centred learning and self evaluation/refl ection. The research phase (supported by a supervisory team) culminates in the production of a thesis/portfolio.

Full-time students attend at the University between blocks with successful completion of the module leading to the research phase. The part-time programme provides the freedom to continue working.

I am a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Germany and head of the Economics and Policy practice. I am also managing director of the official export credit and investment insurance scheme and I regularly act as a government adviser for foreign trade and public policy.

I’ve always been interested in academic work, and research is a very important part of that. I knew of Northumbria University’s great reputation, and Newcastle Business School was recommended to me by several leading academics. The professional doctorate is the ideal opportunity to combine academic research with my professional background. It enables me to enhance my research capabilities and theoretical understanding while at the same time addressing real problems.

For me, the highlights are the very active doctoral community, involvement in workshops and seminars, the great research summer school and the annual doctoral conferences. As a result I built up great relationship with other research students from all over the world.

Newcastle is an amazing place to live, learn and work. Studying for a professional doctorate at Newcastle Business School is a fantastic experience and an important step in pursuit of my academic passion.

Care can be defi ned as painstaking attention or solicitude, treatment or intervention, especially in relation to someone who is vulnerable. It is also used to mean cherishing a person – a feeling of being cared for. Compassion is generally understood as a feeling of sympathy for someone in trouble or distress, accompanied by a desire to act – to alleviate it. This interdisciplinary research group is concerned with processes of, and attitudes to, health and often social care in a variety of contexts (spanning hospital and community settings) and at different life stages (from early years to older age). Our networks and experience span hospital and community, NHS and academia across the UK and beyond. We employ concepts and theory from health and social care professions and a range of academic disciplines. We have a developing focus on improvement science. Research falls into three areas:

Interventions and Innovations includes for example, current studies in relation to pain management, measures of quality of care and patient safety, as well as work addressing the management of a range of specifi c clinical challenges. A recent doctoral student looked at midwives’ experience and practice in the assessment of maternal postnatal genital tract health.

Workforce and Organisation looks at systems for effective care delivery and examines roles and competences required to provide improved quality of care. This includes for example, understanding the implementation of new and changing roles in healthcare practice, and identifying the training and development needs of staff in particular roles and contexts which will enable them to deliver safe, high quality care. We have undertaken studies in mental health and primary healthcare as well as in acute trusts, and examined the ways in which staff groups interact to deliver effective care. A recent doctoral student examined patients’ experience of safety in transfers of care.

Dialogue encompasses empowerment / user voices / participatory approaches to research and practice, and examines the interface between user voices and staff perceptions, and ways of engaging this conversation for service improvement. This includes for example, studies which seek to understand experiences of care through the eyes of service users and informal carers and to actively involve them in developing practice. A recent international doctoral student examined the cultural framework of women’s experience of breast cancer in her country, with a view to informing future health promotion.

PhD ApplicantsAt Northumbria, we are dedicated to providing opportunities for people to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities by offering programmes that are fl exible enough to suit the needs and commitments of everyday lives.

PhDs and Professional DoctoratesWe offer several research degree programmes. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Professional Doctorate are designed to develop research and enquiry skills to the highest level, and to advance their careers through enhancing academic and professional development. The PhD allows students to undertake an individual programme that will enable original research to doctoral level in their fi eld of study. The Professional Doctorate is equivalent in standing to a PhD, with a clear focus on developing and improving professional skills and practice, it is the logical choice for professionals who wish to continue lifelong learning.

We offer PhDs and Professional Doctorates in:• Nursing• Midwifery• Physiotherapy• OccupationalTherapy• HealthCare• PublicHealth

Care and compassion should be at the heart of healthcare practice in all areas. It encompasses core values for many, if not most, health

professions, and provides a vehicle linking interventions, attitudes and user experience.

Juliana Thompson PhD student and graduate tutorImmediately after my BSc I worked in a nursing home for older people. I enjoyed my job immensely, but found that care home nurses are often regarded as having lower professional status than other health professionals.

A few years later I’ve returned to Northumbria as graduate tutor in adult nursing. It is an exciting role which gives me the opportunity to study for a PhD whilst gaining teaching experience. The experience I gained at the nursing home had a big influence on my choice of research topic: An exploration of the experiences and views of care home nurses regarding their role and status.

I am strongly supported in my studies by the university. The Graduate School offer a range of sessions which provide excellent research training. These sessions also enable students from different Faculties to meet and share research ideas and experiences. All members of the teaching/supervision staff are keen to offer support and expertise, my principal supervisor is particularly helpful. In addition, the postgraduate student community is very welcoming and supportive. There are numerous student-led activities, discussion groups and study groups available. Peer support is very strong.

Research ProfileWe received outstanding results in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008. We are delighted that for Nursing and Midwifery, 50% of our submitted research was assessed as being world-leading or internationally excellent.

PartnershipsAt Northumbria we pride ourselves on our commitment to partnerships and collaborations. Partnerships include the NHS, voluntary organisations, local authorities and private sector organisations. We are currently in partnership with NHS hospitals, Primary Care Trusts, nursing homes, the independent healthcare sector, local authorities and voluntary agencies. These include a range of models and levels of partnership working extremely well together, ensuring the highest quality training and achievement of standards.

We have strong partnerships with local leaders in order to ensure recent and relevant theoretical

and practical synergy, and to ensure continuous improvement. At Northumbria we place great emphasis on feedback, constantly working with students and partners to evaluate and further develop our programmes.

We have demonstrated our ability to work with diverse routes and partners, each unique, but with a common philosophy of excellence for all stakeholders through developing highly motivated inspirational students who collaborate and will lead future Health and Social Care practice.

FacilitiesWe have a dynamic postgraduate community with students undertaking research in a broad range of subject areas. PartnershipsCollaboration with national and international universities, professional bodies and industry is key to our success. We regularly provide consultation to a variety of organisations, from the Nigerian police force to mobile software developers and library services.

Northumbria University is one of only four successful teams chosen to be part of the UK’s first Cyber Security Institute. The Institute,

established by UK Government Communications Headquarters, in partnership with the Research Councils’ Global Uncertainties Programme (RCUK), allows leading academics in the field of cyber security from across the UK to work together to address cyber security threats directed at the UK’s financial, public and industrial infrastructure.

Short courses, professional accreditation, employer feedback meetings and conferences all feed back into the knowledge and experience of our academic staff, which is then used to advise research students.

Stephen Doswell PhD student and graduate tutor

I teach Digital and Computer Forensics and Ethical Hacking for Network Security. I undertake around 6 – 8 hours of teaching related activity every week; which includes lectures, seminars and supporting student projects. The rest of the time, I spend working on my PhD.

Prior to this I worked in the IT industry for 15 years, mainly within the banking and financial services sector. My first degree was a combined honours in Computer Science and Psychology and my postgraduate degree was in Digital Forensics, where I received a Masters with distinction.

I find Computer Forensics and Ethical Hacking very interesting as the subject area is continually changing. For my PhD, I decided that I wanted my research to be non-commercial; and instead make a contribution to society. Therefore, I am undertaking research in improving the anonymity and performance provided by Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) within the increasing area of mobile technology.

The most rewarding aspect of a PhD is that you are continuously learning new skills, acquiring knowledge and researching areas that you are interested in.

My time in Northumbria so far has been interesting, exciting and challenging. Academia is going through a lot of changes at the moment but it seems that Northumbria is currently in a good place and doing things the right way which is positive for the future here!

PhD ApplicantsThere are now 32 PhD students advancing design research within Design. PhD students work across our design disciplines in our Newcastle and London campuses.

Potential PhD students are strongly advised to identify a Professor, Reader or Senior Lecturer whose research interests them, and to use the web to research their recent work. Applicants should identify a research topic from one of our eight research themes (detailed on page 42).

We seek exceptional applicants who will push the boundaries of design research and practice, contest accepted wisdom and explore new design thinking and research methodologies within and across a chosen field of study relating to our above research themes.

Having completed my degree in Multimedia Design at Northumbria University, I applied for and was offered a University scholarship to further develop my knowledge around visual literacy in design education. A highlight during the first year of my PhD was receiving an award for a paper presented at the International Visual Literacy Conference in South Africa, this was a big honour and an experience I will never forget.

Being dyslexic I have had difficulty engaging in doctoral study, but the PhD community in Design and the wellbeing staff at Northumbria have been extremely supportive. The PhD community itself has been very stimulating and is a joy to be around. I feel that the PhD, as I near the completion of the thesis, has developed my self-awareness, changing the way I look at problems and engage with different types of research.

The PhD community within the Department has grown dramatically in the past couple of years, which has allowed us to create separate meetings and social events as a group. It’s good experience to be able to share any issues and common problems in an informal arena.

My supervision team are very supportive and have a good spread of knowledge and background expertise. The research/supervision relationship is much more informal and relaxed than previous teaching years which makes the PhD process enjoyable.

I am also a part-time lecturer on the MA design course. I was a student on the course a few years ago and my past experience not only allows me to reflect on my development as an academic but also to connect with my students and their position on the course. This of course feeds naturally into my PhD and provides a good contrasting overview of design. Northumbria provides a lot of activities to supplement learning.

There are always talks, trainings, exhibition openings, etc. I’d advise anyone to get involved with as many things external to your work as possible such as projects, talks, exhibitions etc. Meet and talk to as many people as possible, you never know when they could be helpful to you in the future.

As well as studying for a Doctorate I work in initial teacher education (ITE) at Northumbria. As an academic there are plenty of opportunities for staff development. I work with a supportive and effective team of ex-teachers so between us we have a wealth of practice-based experience. Within this we are able to draw on the experience of the established researchers as well as those that work as part of the postgraduate research team.

I like the structure of the Doctorate programme, it suits my approach to research and fits around my day to day work. I see my EdD as a means of increasing my research activity and following completion intend to keep up the momentum by writing articles for publication in journals that are related to my field of interest.

As my programme develops I’d like my findings to provide a reference point for curriculum and programme development within ITE and other departments across the university and beyond.

PhD ApplicantsWith such a broad range of research interests within Geography, we are able to supervise Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and other research programmes in a wide range of subjects, no matter what your area of interest.

Our research groups work closely together and collaborate with colleagues from many subject areas within the University and with institutions and organisations in the UK and internationally. Our activities in this area include:

Earth Systems and Environmental Change research involves cold environments, ecology and environmental geochemical analysis projects in diverse regions including Antarctica, Arctic Canada, Indonesia, New Zealand and Asia. Cutting edge physical and numerical modelling, GIS and remote sensing and fi eld based techniques allow answers to questions fundamental to physical geography with a strong focus on how such science can be applied to real world problems. The group has led on the application of novel techniques to fi eld data collection, including ground-penetrating radar, new borehole radar technologies, seismics, NIR camera techniques, meteorological monitoring technologies, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS).

Environmental Geochemistry and Ecology focuses upon the sustainability of the physical, chemical and biological environment, with researchers focused on novel and interdisciplinary approaches to ecology, microbiology and environmental geochemical analysis. The group utilises state-of-the-art techniques in geochemical analysis and community profi ling using metagenomics, comparative genomics and statistical analysis.

Environmental Management research takes place within a framework with a central concern for sustainable futures. Work within the disciplines

is concerned with the community, social and environmental resilience, gender, ethnicity, security, physical and mental health.

Human Geography and Crime Science are closely related in terms of research. Human geography covers a broad spectrum of issues but shares a common concern with the processes that shape the material conditions affecting people’s everyday lives. A particular emphasis is placed upon the examination of unequal power relationships that are manifest in a range of geographical phenomena, frequently in subtle and nuanced ways. This approach links to research in crime science where temporal patterns of offences are set within a spatial and social context.

Risks, Disasters and Development involves international research on climate change, undertaken with a range of organisations including various parts of the United Nations system; regional, national and local government; International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs); grassroots groups and educational bodies. The Disaster and Development Centre (DDC) is a research centre with the principal activity of associating sustainable development with improved human security through risk management, resilience, emergency response systems and longer term recovery strategies.

Research Profi leGeography is a department within the Faculty of Engineering and Environment. Eighty-fi ve per cent of the Faculty’s research submitted in the General Engineering category of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) was rated as being of an ‘internationally recognised standard’, with 50% of this ‘internationally excellent’ or above. Since then we have continued growing our numbers of research active staff and students and will make a submission in the Geography category in the Research Excellence Framework 2014.

Geography at Northumbria University encompasses all of our work in geography; crime science; environmental health and management; health and safety; and disaster management. Our researchers address

the challenges of the world’s natural environment: climate change, poverty, wealth generation, migration and cultural diversity.

Leanne WilsonPhD student

I really loved my time here as an undergraduate student – the teaching was exceptional and my degree in Environmental Management helped me access fantastic job opportunities.

After graduation I went on to work in Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, USA, Yemen, Zambia, and across the UK and Europe on a range of climate change and renewable energy projects.

My PhD application to Northumbria and my research proposal were both based upon my practical experience of working on climate change issues within and beyond the UK policy context. I have received excellent support from my supervisory team, the Graduate School, admin staff, fellow PGR students and also teaching staff. The Graduate School run specifi c research training sessions, and the PGR students hold a regular research symposium.

The most rewarding aspect of a PhD is the freedom to develop new knowledge and skills, as well as the opportunity to teach, publish and work with local communities. It’s a fantastic experience – as long as you choose something that can sustain your interest for three years.

FacilitiesThere is a research hub where professors, researchers, research support teams and postgraduate students work in an open and well-equipped environment. A nearby virtual environment suite is staffed by specialists in the application of virtual reality and digital technologies.

There is a rolling programme of facility and equipment refurbishment to ensure optimal access to resources.

Partnerships Collaboration with national and international universities, professional bodies and public and private sector organisations is key to our success. We regularly provide consultation to a variety of organisations and have had successful partnerships with organisations such as UNICEF and the Egyptian National Housing and Building National Research Centre.

Northumbria University’s academics are also part of a team of scientists who have explored a sub glacial lake hidden 3km beneath Antartica’s ice sheet. Working with scientists from 14 UK universities and research institutes as well as colleagues from Chile, the USA, Sweden, Belgium, Germany and New Zealand, a series of experiments have been conducted on the site in what has been the fi rst detailed characterisation of the physiography of a sub glacial lake.

Short courses, professional accreditation, employer feedback meetings and conferences all feed back into the knowledge and experience of our academic staff, which is then used to advise research students.

We also have a buoyant PhD programme in creative writing, for which candidates have to compose a creative piece alongside a critically refl ective text and will normally be taught by a supervisory team made up of both creative writers and critics. The study of language is another important aspect of research within the Department. Northumbria has an international profi le in the fi eld of cognitive linguistics as well as supervisory strength in pedagogic linguistics.

Historical research is national, international, and transnational in nature and utilises a range of methods, from historical biography to large scale quantitative analyses of migrant populations.

Interdisciplinary research is also a key feature, with research projects involving engagement with literature, politics, sociology and anthropology.

Particular research strengths include: early modern European cultural and social history; nineteenth century British, Irish and American history; the history of diasporas, ethnicity and migration in the Anglo-phone world; labour, gender and working-class history; transnational ideologies, activities and movements in modern Europe and America.

PhD ApplicantsA PhD involves a programme of active research, over three years full-time or fi ve years part-time, with the support of a supervisory team of specialists in the chosen fi eld. Expert supervision is available across all areas of humanities. A comprehensive training programme, designed for doctoral students drawing on a number of strands and designed to be responsive to different individual and subject needs, is available to all doctoral students.

Postgraduate research is a central and exciting part of the Department of Humanities research culture. The Department’s research into

literature has a broad scope, with particular areas of specialisation in early modern literature, eighteenth-century literature including

Romanticism, twentieth-century literature (with a particular strength in Modernism), and American literature from 1800 to the present day. We encourage interdisciplinary study, especially using gender studies,

popular culture, and medical humanities.

I chose to do a PhD because I’d like to become a full-time historian, which will in turn allow me to undertake further research and to lecture and teach at university. Study at Northumbria appealed to me because of the investment the University is putting into supporting postgraduate researchers.

In addition, from a lifestyle point of view Newcastle makes a great base because it offers something for everyone; from clubs, to architecture and theatres, cinemas, shops and sport.

So far, the best thing about a PhD for me has been the freedom to pursue my own interests and ideas. You have to fully absorb yourself into a PhD, it’s much more like a full-time job than an undergraduate degree is, but that’s why it’s also important to take proper days off. You need to be quite disciplined to make sure you get the balance right, and realise that you might spend a lot of time feeling anxious that you haven’t!

Most Postgraduate Research Students (PGRs) are enrolled on the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy Degree) either full-time or part-time, but some are enrolled on the MPhil (Master of Philosophy) which may also be taken full-time or part-time. These programmes provide students with the opportunity to conduct an intensive piece of research into their chosen fi eld, employing a range of research methods, as appropriate to the area of study. Students are supported by at least two and sometimes more supervisors, depending on the topic of research. All PGRs are provided with subject specifi c research development training as well as the opportunity to participate in the wider generic skills sessions offered by the University.

For those PGRs engaged in teaching – either as part of their studentship or because they have expressed an interest in doing so – the University offers a full programme of training, while the School of Law offers mentoring and peer support.

The School of Law encourages and supports its PGRs to attend and participate in conferences and postgraduate workshops within and beyond the University and they are invited to all research events taking place in the School of Law ranging from guest lectures to research training seminars.

Centre for Evidence and Criminal Justice StudiesThe purpose of this Centre is, essentially, to bring together those members of School of Law staff who teach or research in the fi elds of criminal law or evidence and the related fi elds of criminal and civil procedure. The aims of the Centre include encouraging further research and publication, the exchange of ideas amongst members and the organisation of staff seminars and conferences. The Centre involves members of the local bench and local practitioners in staff seminars as external members of the Centre.

The Centre is also happy to organise sessions, including CPD activities, for external bodies, and/or to provide consultancy services, where appropriate. The School of Law is currently able to offer supervision within this fi eld of law under the guidance of the Director, Dr Michael Stockdale, and other colleagues within the Centre.

Research ClustersThere are a number of research clusters refl ecting the research interests of staff and these include: human rights; animal law; information rights; clinical legal education; medical and mental health law and legal management and regulation.

These interesting clusters organise conferences, encourage collaborative research projects and invite external speakers to the School of Law.

Research Sta In recent years the School of Law has invested considerable resources in recruiting research active staff and currently has full-time professorial staff and visiting professorial staff, as well as a number of staff with doctorial experience. It is therefore able to offer supervision across a range of legal topics, with a concentration of specialisms in: human rights – domestic and international; criminal law and evidence – including criminal procedure; legal education; public law; intellectual property law; aspects of European Union law and consumer law.

FacilitiesPostgraduate Research Students have a dedicated space in the PGR Hub located in Ellison Terrace. It is conveniently located for accessing the main University Library and the Law Practice Library at City Campus East.

Northumbria School of Law has a growing Postgraduate Research community and has, in recent years, invested considerable resources in order to provide dedicated space for students and academic staff to

I graduated from Northumbria University in 2009 with an LLB (Hons) Law Exempting degree. I wanted to engage in postgraduate study but initially I undertook some work experience with an immigration solicitor. I gained a particular interest in refugee and asylum law which was furthered after voluntary work at the North of England Refugee Service. Around this time one of my undergraduate lecturers told me about the studentship programme. I made enquiries, sent off a proposal and I was delighted to be accepted.

My supervisor is extremely supportive with my work and I feel that I can approach anyone within the School of Law in accessing their expertise. Everyone is happy to help. The research culture within law and across the wider university is developing all the time so it is an exciting time to be researching at the School of Law.

I was told that undertaking a PhD could be an isolating experience; however the postgraduate community within the School of Law is great. We have our own office so there is always someone to talk to if you need advice or want to chat about your research. Our weekly legal research lunches are also an excellent opportunity to meet and share ideas with other law staff and to get advice from people who have research experience, such as presenting papers or submitting articles.

Wendy Beautyman Lecturer and PhD graduate

I first came to Northumbria for my undergraduate degree after which I was given the opportunity to do a PhD. I progressed the idea from my undergraduate dissertation further and based my PhD on information literacy. It is basically about getting people more involved with the information they need to sort through; how to find what they need, where to find it and how to apply it; it’s about taking a more critical approach to information.

The most rewarding aspect of doing a PhD was being able to really examine something that I am very passionate about and it allowed me to investigate the subject in more detail. I recently attended the Librarian Information Literacy Annual Conference in Glasgow where I gave a paper based on my PhD. It was really rewarding because there were some expert people sitting in the audience asking me questions about my work and saying how the things that I have discovered had application in projects that they were involved in. It made me feel like it was really worthwhile.

What I like the most about Northumbria are the students. They are what makes this job the best in the world. Watching them blossom through the years of their degree programmes has been really fulfilling.

I also have great working colleagues. We have a really friendly atmosphere. As a new academic, you need help and they have been absolutely brilliant in supporting me!

Northumbria offered a very competitive studentship package with an exciting research project, and Newcastle really attracted me as a city. I love living here.

The PhD programme allowed me to incorporate a lot of my earlier research interests (gender studies, history of sexuality) into a burgeoning academic field (popular music studies). Enthusiasm for the subject matter is essential as a PhD is a massive commitment. You need to ensure you are starting a project that you can eventually finish.

Regular contact with your supervisory team is a really important element of succeeding at PhD level. I have monthly meetings with my supervisors, which helps to clarify the direction of my research as well as to discuss the progress of my written work. I also found shadowing my supervisor during his lectures very useful in preparing for my own teaching experiences. The media tutors were always available to discuss my lesson plans, and to offer valuable advice for taking on the classroom!

I studied at Northumbria for my undergraduate degree and masters so it was the natural choice for my PhD. The supervising and teaching staff are fantastic. The assistance from senior lecturers here one-on-one is absolutely incredible. The postgraduate student community is very good, I love its multiculturalism.

My research involves looking at replacing everyday incandescent and fluorescent lights with LEDS because LEDS can be switched on and off very fast; so data like internet can be transmitted through the lights in the house rather than using WIFI.

During my PhD I have been to several conferences, including Oxford University for an optical workshop. We also displayed our research to the public at the Newcastle Science Festival. I am currently writing a paper for a conference in Vietnam and planning another workshop in Italy.

The overall experience has been great. When I look back at how I started I can’t believe the improvement in my skills. The tutors are friendly, students are great and if you strike the right balance between work and play it will be one of the greatest decisions you will ever make.

Richard Cutter PhD student

Since 2006 I have been self employed with my own psychotherapy practice, and combined with aspects from my Masters course I developed a particular interest in addictive behaviours and discourse analysis. This interest developed into my proposal for my PhD. I chose Northumbria because it offers a leading language research setting in the form of the Cognition and Communications Research Centre (CoCo), and support from supervisors who are renowned specialists in their field.

Funding is often a concern for many PhD students and there are many different avenues to explore. I initially started my PhD on a self-funded part-time basis. As I progressed I was awarded a funded studentship from The Responsible Gambling Fund (RGF), which has enabled me to continue full-time. This also means I am working alongside the RGF, and benefit from the industry connections and wealth of resources they offer.

The PhD process involves many facets of academic and professional learning opportunities and I have found it to be an exciting and challenging undertaking. Northumbria provides an excellent environment for studying at PhD level. The level of support and resources available has made the experience exceptional.

Our Research Community Knowledge translation, user involvement and engagement in research and practice are strong core elements of much of our research. There are three main research sub-groups under the public health research group: health improvement; ageing and later life research; participatory research and involvement; health economics. The group is closely associated with FUSE, the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health, and with the Building Knowledge Together working group in Newcastle. Our research partners range from councils, health and social services, local voluntary organisations and SMEs, to other academic institutions nationally and internationally. Our aim is to work collaboratively and inclusively.

Examples of our research include: the role of lay health advisors in public health, workforce development in public health, evaluation of end of life care and support for long-term conditions, ageing in place and improving older people’s health and wellbeing, developing participatory methods with older adults, evaluation of local interventions aimed at reducing inequalities in health, the role of social marketing in health improvement, development of economic evaluation methods for complex public health interventions, infection and disease prevention, and investigation of factors linked to quality of life and mental health and wellbeing.

Patrick Okonji PhD student

I completed my Masters degree in Public Health at Northumbria and was very happy with the academic and ICT support. The lecturers are not only professionals in their fields, but experts at helping students grasp the essence of lectures/knowledge.

I also have a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from the University of Benin, Nigeria. I have worked in the field of ocular rehabilitation with visually impaired people in Nigeria and volunteered as an ICT assistant for blind and partially sighted people in Newcastle. These experiences gave me insight into the myriad of challenges they face with using ICT. My research focuses on meeting the needs of visually impaired older people by supporting their daily lives and facilitating their integration into society.

The peer support networks among postgraduate research students helps to foster collaborative learning and mutual development of research skills. We present our research progress and challenges to one another, articulate our findings and exchange vital information that could improve our research.

I believe the most rewarding aspect of doing a PhD is in knowing that you are contributing something novel to an existing body of knowledge in order to make the world a better place.

Staff have received external funding for research and consultancy in these areas from a range of sources, including UK research councils, UK and European government departments and institutions, international organisations and voluntary sector bodies. Recent awards include funding from: the Ministry of Justice; the North East Offender Health Commissioning Unit; the British Academy; the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods; the ESRC and the Technology Strategy Board; the British Academy; the European Commission; Newcastle City Council; Newcastle Youth Offending Team; the Cyrenians; the Department of Health; the Millfi eld House Foundation; CAFOD (Catholic Overseas Development Agency); JISLAC (Joint Initiative for the Study of Latin America and the Caribbean). The Department has also recently been awarded a Home Offi ce Framework contract for the following three research themes: Victims and Witnesses of Crime; Race and the Criminal Justice System; Violent and Sex Offenders. In 2011, the Department hosted the British Society of Criminology Annual Conference.

Professional Doctorate in Public Administration (DPA)The DPA is an innovative qualifi cation designed for practitioners and managers operating at a senior level to undertake continuing professional development and postgraduate study at doctoral level. It is an ideal choice for international senior managers, service providers, project workers in the public and voluntary sectors and those

working in partner organisations involved in the delivery of public services. Studying for a DPA enables students to focus on the management and implementation of public policy within the institutional framework of the modern state.

Designed to enable systematic engagement in original research, the DPA enhances knowledge and professional practice through a critical understanding of the administration of public services within national, European and global contexts. It allows the integration of academic and professional knowledge, leading to new understandings of the way in which professional practice can be improved in the rapidly changing public sector.

PhD ApplicantsStaff research expertise in criminology, sociology and politics underpins a growing community of postgraduate research students in the Department. As well as self-funded research studentships the Department is able to offer a number of bursaries from time-to-time.

Examples of some current PhDs include:

• HonourCrimeintheUK

• UrbanGraffiti

• StudentActivism

• Anglo-IndianIdentity

• EasternEuropeanMigrationtotheUK

• TheDisabilityBenefitsSystem

• InternationalVolunteering

• FairtradeandCitizenship

The Department of Social Sciences is home to one of the largest multidisciplinary groups of social sciences researchers in the

sector. Research activity in the Department is organised around well-established core themes including: criminology; international

development; local and regional governance; social activism; sustainable communities; urban regeneration; and work and employment. This research is underpinned by a concern with the issues of decision-

making, leadership, policy processes, social change, crime and security, social justice, political and economic power and public policy.

Master of Research (MRes)The intensive research-focused Masters degree programme in Social Sciences is taught by widely published scholars who are experts in their fields. These degrees are ideal preparation for students wishing to pursue doctoral studies, careers in professional research or teaching. On completion of the programme, students will be well prepared to commence work on a PhD.

Clare Wiper PhD student

After receiving a First Class Honours degree in Criminology, I spent a year conducting ethnographic research within a women’s organisation on an MRes course. I received a distinction for this piece of research, and was encouraged to apply for a PhD studentship.

I knew a PhD would give me the creative freedom to design my own project with the support and guidance of other academics who are enthusiastic about my research area. I was also interested in the opportunity to gain experience teaching undergraduate students, which is particularly invaluable for PhD students hoping to pursue a career in academia.

Academics are regularly in contact about up-coming opportunities, and are always thinking about how to help postgraduate students boost their employability, by encouraging us to teach, publish our work and present at conferences.

I love the level of activity within the department and the PhD research community. We host regular departmental seminars which attract academic speakers from around the country, and PhD students are encouraged to apply for internal and external funding to host conferences on topics of our choice.

I appreciate the excellent opportunities that I have been offered such as co-editing a special issue of an academic journal, working as a research assistant on a colleague’s project, teaching lectures and seminars, presenting at conferences, and publishing my work.

Our Research CommunityThe expertise and special interests of staff within the social work and disability research group includes: • Children, Families and Communities –

child and family communication, ecological models of child welfare policy and practice, staff supervision, child and adolescent mental health, the sociology of childhood, children’s attachments to people and places, children’s literature, and safeguarding children (including their sexualisation).

• Disability – disabling barriers, changing constructions of mental health, new practice paradigms with disabled people, policy and practice evaluation, global disablism, hate crimes, violence and disabled people, ageing in place, and assistive technology.

Research with Children, Families and Communities: This multi-disciplinary group conducts collaborative and participatory research designed to improve the wellbeing of children and the functioning of their families and communities. As well as supporting individual students undertaking research to doctoral level, we provide commissioned research, evaluation and consultancy to professionals and organisations in the fi elds of social work, early years and community work. For example, we are currently involved in evaluating innovative projects in two local authority children’s services departments, one focused on complex ‘children in need’ cases, and the other on a pre-birth assessment project being piloted in County Durham.

Disability Research: This multi-disciplinary group conducts inclusive and participatory research in a wide range of disability-related fi elds. Examples of current work includes a study of personal budgets, care coordination pathways and recovery models in mental health,

a global systematic review of the effectiveness of vocational interventions for disabled and blind jobseekers, cooperatives and the delivery of direct payments, empowering research with people with learning diffi culties, and barriers to disabled young workers – a global network. Our research is funded by a range of prestigious sources, including the Leverhulme Trust, the Department of Health, the National Institute for Health Research, and the UK Government’s Offi ce for Disability Issues. We have a vibrant postgraduate community with more than 30 postgraduate students undertaking disability, inclusion, mental health and learning diffi culties research. Members of the group have a high standing in disability studies, including six editorial staff on the top journal in the fi eld Disability and Society – more than any other university in the world.

PhDs and Professional DoctoratesWe are dedicated to providing opportunities for people to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities by offering full- and part-time research programmes that are fl exible enough to suit the needs and commitments of everyday lives. For example, many part-time research students pursue their studies whilst employed in a social work agency, either funding themselves or being supported by their employers. Full-time students are typically funded by one of the government-supported national research councils or the University, either fully or in partnership with their employing organisation.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Professional Doctorate programmes are designed to develop research and enquiry skills to the highest level, and to promote career opportunities through enhancing academic and professional development. Robbie Duschinsky PhD graduate and supervisor

I have always been interested in families, and in family dynamics. Building from this interest, my Doctorate addressed the role of psychology in social policies regarding the protection of young people from sexual harm.

I now lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate level at Northumbria and I supervise a number of Doctorates. The particular excitement of the doctoral projects I supervise is that they grapple with uncertainties regarding the role of psychological and social processes in people’s lives.

I enjoy trying to sort through these uncertainties with doctoral students, as within their specific investigation will be a whole range of important, interconnecting themes and questions to be thought about, so there can be a real sense of adventure.

support of an expert supervisory team) that will make an original contribution to knowledge in their chosen field of study. Full-time students normally complete PhDs within three years, with part-time study normally lasting five years. The Professional Doctorate involves one year of taught study followed by two years of research (or their part-time equivalents), with a focus on developing and improving professional skills and practice. It is often the logical choice for experienced professionals who wish to further their learning.

Among the subjects currently being investigated by our research students are: decision-making by child protection social workers; young people’s involvement in child welfare decision-making forums; young people’s experiences of witnessing domestic violence; the sexualisation of children; the roles and identities of professionals, volunteers and service users in community development projects; the involvement of older people in processes for safeguarding adults; and perceptions and experiences of the personalisation of services.

PartnershipsAt Northumbria we pride ourselves on our commitment to partnerships and collaborations with a wide range of voluntary organisations, local authorities and private sector organisations involved in delivering social work, community development and disability-related services. For example, we have established a Social Work Strategic Partnership Board, involving senior representatives of the University’s Department of Social Work and Communities and the major employers of social workers in the region, to facilitate knowledge exchange and strategic planning in relation to the development of high quality professional education and applied research. The University also hosts two collaborative seminar series (Social Work Conversations and Making Research Count) which promote excellence through the integration of learning from research and practice.

Jamie TallentPhD student

I am from Staines in London and currently coming to the end of my first year PhD. I found out about Northumbria from a lecturer with whom I completed my MSc. Upon seeing the University facilities and the high standard of staff in the department I was instantly impressed. After completing a six-month post as a research assistant I enrolled on to a PhD.

My research investigates neurological adaptations from resistance training using lengthening and shortening muscle actions. During my first year I had the opportunity to travel to East Carolina University in the USA to work with a lead professor in my area. The time I spent in the USA ensured that I learnt the techniques necessary to complete my PhD at the highest possible standard. The Graduate School has been exceptionally supportive and funded me to present findings from my research at appropriate conferences. They have also provided informative workshops that have helped me to develop as a researcher.

Northumbria University has also given me the opportunity to progress my skills as a strength and conditioning coach and an applied physiologist. Along with my PhD I also work for the English Institute of Sport, Team Northumbria Basketball and Gateshead Thunder Rugby League.
