Rock Music: What is it?

Rock music is a genre of popular music that developed during and after the 1960s, especially in the United States and the United Kingdom. Usually it’s centred around an electric guitar, bass guitar and drums. By the late 60’s several sub-genres had developed, jazz-rock fusion, country rock, blues rock and folk rock. Unlike many early styles of popular music, rock has dealt with themes as rebellion, sex, social concerns and lifestyles. In the mid-1970’s the punk-rock genre was born, it was developed in the US, the UK and Australia. Examples of this genre include, The Ramones, Sex Pistols and The Clash. Pop-punk fuses the genres pop and punk, making a sort of ‘bubble gum punk’ as it can be called. Examples of these include The Offspring and Blink-182. The types of imagery associated with rock: darkness, danger, loudness, rebellion, power, toughness.

Rise Against (top left) is a punk rock band, you are not able to see this from the picture as their clothes are not something typical of punk rock bands. The tattoo showing on Tim McIrath’s arm (the vocalist) shows rebellion, which is a theme often used in punk rock. Deftones (top right) are an alternative metal/experimental rock band. The visibility of their tattoos shows their rebellion, typical of this style of music. Their clothes are mostly dark which again is typical of this genre. Rammstein (bottom left) are a rock band from Germany. They are dressed in dark suits and standing together in a menacing way, this is to show how tough they are. They are in a dark setting; this reinforces the dark, dangerous stereotype of rock. System of a Down (bottom right) are a four piece metal band. They are dressed in dark clothing and three of them aren’t smiling, this is to show how rough this genre is and abides by the rock stereotype. One of them is smiling breaking the stereotypical view of the moody rocker.
