Rescript of Pope Martin V
Bishop of Rome and Roman Pontiff
Issued on the 3rdof March Anno Domini 1428
Martin.... To all the faithful who shall see this letter.....health.... etc.... Since therefore, as
We have learned, the buildings and structure of the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Jesmond
in the Diocese of Durham are in a very ruinous condition to which out of remarkable devotion a
great many of the faithful are wont to congregate, on account of the various miracles the Most High
has deigned to work there at the behest of the glorious Virgin, and since the alms of the faithful will,
it is evident, being desirous that the buildings and the structure of this Chapel be repaired and also
preserved and that the Faithful should gather there the more gladly out of devotion and give help
towards its repair and preservation the more promptly when they, trusting in the mercy of Almighty
God and the authority of His Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, shall see that there are abundantly
rewarded by the gift of Heavenly Grace, to all who, after confession and with true repentance, shall
annually visit the said Chapel on the Feasts of the Nativity, Circumcision, Epiphany, Resurrection,
Ascension, Corpus Christi and Pentecost and on the Nativity, Annunciation, Purification and
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the nativity of Blessed John the Baptist and on the
festivals of the aforesaid Apostles Peter and Paul and of the Dedication of the Church itself and on
the Solemnity of All Saints and throughout the Octaves of the Feasts of the Nativity, Circumcision,
Epiphany, Resurrection, Ascension, and Corpus Christi and also of the Nativity and Assumption of
the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Nativity of Blessed John and the aforesaid Apostles Peter and Paul
and throughout the six days immediately following the said Feast of Pentecost and shall have given
help towards the repair and preservation, we now by these presents to be valid for ten years remit
namely on each of the Festivals and solemnities one years and forty days of penance enjoined on
them and on the Octaves and aforesaid six days on which they visit the Chapel and give help for the
repair and preservation, as said above one hundred days. We will however that if any otherindulgence has been granted by Us in perpetuity or for a certain time not yet expired, to those
serving this Chapel or giving help for its fabric fund, repair or preservation or to thhose there
bestowing alms, the present letter shall be of no force or moment.
Given at Rome at the Holy Apostles, the 3rd of March, in the eleventh years of our pontificate.
