AdultEd & SPOKES: News & Notes Nicholas SPOKES

Substitute Christine Elkins put her creativity front and center as she prepared an information board about Valentines Day on February 14. The students enjoyed learning about the origins of the "day of love" and eating some sweet treats in the process. Thanks Christine!

Brian & Heather Hart Brian and Heather Hart came to SPOKES with a plan – a plan to move their family to self-sufficiency. However, like many others who come to SPOKES, the plan didn’t include coming to class. What is this class? Why do I have to come? These are some of the typical questions that run through a new SPOKES student’s mind. Brian was no different. It wasn’t long before Brian realized value in the class. He excelled with computer related tasks. He scored 2711 points out of 3000 on the three tests for IC3! Then moved on to pass his Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word Expert and Excel Expert to earn his Microsoft Office Master Certification (picture attached). All the while this was happening, life was kicking them down in other ways.

Their living situation was not ideal for them. Promised an America Corp Vista position working with flood recovery in Richwood was rescinded. They went on job interviews but no job offer was extended. The financial strain was taking its toll on them emotionally. Job searching was at the top of their daily to do list. They were willing to move just about anywhere they could secure a job that would provide for them and their little boy.

Heather was successful in landing an interview with WVU Hospitals as a scheduler. The interview went well and the process of references and background checking began. Brian applied for jobs in Morgantown as well. He secured an interview with WVU Radiology as a Radiology Services Representative. Heather’s phone rang one day in class, she stepped into the hall to take the call, and came back in smiling. She was offered the job at WVU Hospital! Life was beginning to look like it might turn around. Then, the very next day, Brian has his feet knocked out as he found out he had thyroid cancer. Doctors moved quickly and within 3 weeks Brian was undergoing surgery to remove his thyroid at WVU Hospital. During this time it has been hard for Brian to remain his normally upbeat self. However, during all the pre-op doctor visits and apartment searching, Brian received word that he’d been hired for the job in radiology!

One last piece of the puzzle needed to be found so it could fall into place. They needed a vehicle of their own. They’d been driving a borrowed car, but there were issues with that arrangement. A referral to Good News Mountaineer Garage had been made, they were accepted to receive a car, and given an estimate of 30 to 45 days. As doctors were making plans to release Brian from the hospital, he received the call. Their car was ready and they could pick it up February 28th! February 28th found Brian, Heather and Henry at Good News Mountaineer Garage receiving the keys to their 2003 Ford Tarsus! (picture attached) They have jobs lined up, an apartment ready, the U-Haul is reserved, and life is getting better.

Raleigh SPOKES

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Bonita Mitchell (standing), Instructor for K.I.S.R.A presented a series on relationships each Monday in February. In the coming months, Bonita will lead sessions about parenting and financial literacy.

SPOKES STUDENTS MOVING FORWARD-ONE STEP AT A TIME February 14, 2017 wasn’t just a day to express love. In Raleigh SPOKES, it was a day to recognize effort and commitment to personal goals and success. The class had a pizza party to celebrate their efforts toward personal responsibility, educational goals, and economic independence. Pizza was provided by SPOKES and students brought desserts, veggies, and drinks. Connie passed 4 of the TASC exams (missed passing Math by 1 point) and has registered to retake the TASC in March. Jeremy was temporarily homeless, separated from his family and literally living on the street. He is now in an apartment with his wife and baby. Michelle has secured employment in Huntington and will be moving in a few weeks. She also will be taking the LPN entrance test in March. Sebastian has had two job interviews, and employment looks promising for him at Dollar General. Three students whose self-esteem has diminished due to decayed teeth have made their dental appointments and are looking forward to flashing a new, pearly white smile when they complete their dental work. These may not seem like earth shattering events, but to each SPOKES participant, their efforts help them get one step closer to feeling better about themselves, reaching their goals, and moving beyond TANF. This is something to celebrate. Life is a journey-not a destination and we celebrate each positive step a student takes.

LEARNING PAINS

Many Adult Ed and SPOKES Instructors took advantage of the Math Workshop Day at RESA1 on January 25, 2017. Among those were Helena Ellis, Raleigh SPOKES Instructor and Debi Aliff, Instructor at the Raleigh County Adult Learning Center. Functions, systems of equations, polynomials, and linear equations are just a few of the "unknowns" that were taught to the captive audience of approximately 21 instructors.

Those providing this top-notch training were Shalom Tazewell, Sandra Adkins and Jared Bailey.

Helena Ellis, SPOKES Instructor & Debbi Aliff, Adult Ed Instructor

Summers County SPOKES students celebrated the achievements of three of our students attaining the Specialist Level in Microsoft Office. Brittany Davis, Charity Utterback, and Lindsey Carroll all worked very hard to achieve the MOS Specialist Credential. The students are continuing their studies in MOS with hopes of achieving the Expert and the Master Level.

Summers County SPOKES students designed and made Valentine’s Coloring Books for their children. The students will give the coloring books to their children along with crayons and treat bags for the holiday. We discussed creative time with the family to encourage their children’s creativity. It was a fun day! Arabella enjoys her new coloring book that her Mommy made for her at SPOKES Class. They spent an enjoyable evening coloring pictures for Valentines Day.

McDowell County Fast Track

Recently, Catholic Charities of West Virginia, the McDowell Adult Education Center, and the McDowell County Career and Technical Center launched a collaborative Nursing Assistant Fast Track class. Students enrolled in the class will complete several weeks of coursework in introductory Nursing Assistant topics, Customer Service Certification, Medical Terminology, and job search skills (i.e. Resume Writing and Interview Skills). After completing the class, students will transition to a Certified Nursing Assistant class offered by the McDowell County Career and Technical Center.

Graduation 20/20 Team meetings in 13 of our 15 schools

Leadership Teams Meetings were scheduled and held with the leadership teams in all but two of our 15 schools – I was sick on the day one school was scheduled, and the principal was absent at the other school on the day of our scheduled meeting. Numerous attempts to contact both of these schools have gone unanswered. However, I have shared information with all schools electronically as well as in person.

Support to Select Teachers at one high school

Teachers at one high school

At the request of the principal, I spent two days at one high school conducting observations and then meeting individually with pre-

selected teachers whose failure rates were higher than other teachers in the school. After observing each teacher for one class period, I returned to the school the next week to meet with each one and discus instructional strategies and interventions they could try that may help their failure rate.

Kenneth Lester Monroe County Over the past month we have continued to work with the State Department’s IT team to resolve our network issues. Our throughput back to Charleston has improved and stabilized. As of last week, we are back to getting consistent speed-tests of 400 GB plus. Issues with webpage and services that utilize Port 443

(secured connection) have also seemed to have been alleviated. In hindsight, we would have hoped for better communication from our State Department’s IT team in not only the issues we presented to them but the status of changes that may impact distributed IT services. The local LAN at PMS issues should be resolved soon. Ms. Terry has setup a meeting to address the neighbors WiFi signal this week. All donated workstations from Dr. Peters Office have been imaged and prepared for deployment at PES. Open work orders are holding at an all-time low with less than ten.

Donald Muncy Mercer County Retrieved a cart from Oakvale Elementary School and Princeton Middle School to upgrade ram and image with windows 8.1. Blocked student’s mobile devices from the Bluefield Middle School DHCP server due to the DHCP running out of IP addresses. Replaced security cameras and repaired Camera connectivity at Mercer County Technical School, as well as planning a project with the school of adding two additional circuits for cameras. Got a large TV working in cafeteria of Oakvale Elementary. Replaced two projectors in Princeton Middle School. Worked on lowering ticket count at Princeton Middle, Bluefield Middle, and PikeView Middle Schools. Worked on network printers, getting them working again. Had to keep Spanishburg Elementary from Printing to Ceres Elementary. Ceres Printer was shared allowing everyone to print to it. Replaced several PS2 keyboards with USB keyboards at Ceres Elementary.

Walter Newcomb McDowell County The Smarter Balanced testing window is quickly approaching and I am pleased to report that the practice sessions are going well. All of the preparation that has been completed is paying off. In addition to the usual testing update, I have completed the

Digital Divide inventory/survey for the McDowell County School System. Which consisted of a complete and thorough inspection of all testing and non-testing devices in each facility. I am now transitioning my attention to the County’s BYOD project and will be providing reports on its progress in the coming months. Barring any staffing or budgetary cuts this project should move ahead steadily.

Nathanial Perry Raleigh County Most of my endeavors this month have been general break/fix. One project of note would be the digital sign at IMS. The power to the sign was finally repaired and I was able to bring the sign back online. Otherwise, I’ve been maintaining and issuing iPads and general duties.

Joshua Prudich Mercer County This month I have replaced multiple projector and projector bulbs. I have also re calibrated smart boards. I have joined hundreds of transformer books, teacher laptops, and labs to the new county wide domain. I have removed viruses and malware. I have resolved issues with KMS. I have replaced and fixed lab printers. I have updated software and reimaged multiple times of machines.

Justin Prudich Mercer County We have been trying to get all of our schools on to the single domain. I have been replacing a few projectors with the new Epson replacements from smart. Working with the other techs and with the power management company we have increased the timeout for the hibernate on the domain computers because of issues with smart software and testing. The transformers continue to be day to day work as they will break the screens and keys. I have been working on getting the desktops on the domain machines cleaned up and push out icons that they actually use.

Aaron Reed Mercer County After transferring Mercer Intermediate to the Mercer domain, Princeton High has been transferred as well, with Bluefield Middle next on the list. For Princeton High, I will setup a group policy to become the county standard. In addition to providing security on each workstation by restricting user rights, it will also authenticate clients to the MercerSecure wireless network, eliminating the need for pre-shared wireless keys. Desktop icons have been standardized across the county. Mr. Murphy met with the school TISs and agreed on a set of icons needed at each school. These icons have been distributed, and the method of distributing them has also been standardized as well. To complete this project, I will be going through each school to verify the version of Read Naturally being used, and set it up at schools still needing the program. I have reinstalled the latest version of System Center, version 1611, and am beginning to deploy clients starting with Princeton Primary school. Currently I am setting up the servers to deploy programs and updates, using the domain controllers at each school as distribution points. After experimenting with program, Windows Update, and Windows 8.1/10 operating system deployments at Princeton Primary, I will begin implementing System Center at each school.

Aiden Vrenna Mercer County It's been interesting to see how uniformly our 25' VGA cables were manufactured and worn. Six of them just failed simultaneously at PVMS. These failures followed a small wave of projector replacements. We've worked through issues with the secure browser, and reports of problems have, for now, disappeared

John Watson RESA 1 February has been a learning opportunity for me to utilize SkillSetsOnline to research the

Windows 10 operating system. I am developing strategies to streamline the deployment and provisioning of this new operating system. Virus scans, wireless issues, hardware upgrades, and general repairs have consumed the remainder of my month.

Joel Weiss Mercer County Over the past month, I have been working removing and hauling surplus scrap and computers from the schools in Mercer County. I have also been working on upgrading several labs throughout the county to the Mercer.dom domain. We also had problems with the KMS registration on a large amount of machines so I have been updating the key information on them. I have been working with Stewart Signs to try to upgrade and repair a digital sign at Mercer Elementary School.
