More than 170 years ago Women championed the cause of Women’s Suffrage.
Lydia Taft, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were the early leaders of
the movement that would take more than 70 years to achieve.
In the beginning of the 20th Century women like Alice Paul lead the movement. Suf-
fragist Paul organized the first picket line outside of the Democrat Woodrow Wil-
son’s White House. For six months, these Suffragist pleas went unanswered... until
June of 1917. That is until….
A Russian delegation came to the White House and the Suffragists unfurled a flag
decrying “We Women of America tell you that America is not a democracy. Twenty
million women are denied the right to vote. President Wilson is the chief opponent
of their national enfranchisement”1
More of these protests occurred and Paul was arrested. But eventually on June 4,
19192 the Senate approved the amendment by 56 to 25 after four hours of debate,
during which Democratic Senators filibustered to prevent a roll call. The vote
passed 36(R) to 20(D). By an 82% to 54% margin and the 19th amendment passed.
The resistance from the Democrats was defeated and eventually enough states rati-
fied the 19th Amendment which prohibited state or federal sex-based restrictions on
voting, in August of 1920.
Just one month later, in September of 1920, four San Antonio Women, Mrs. R.J.
Milburn, Mrs. Alexander Boynton, Mrs. Jimmy Rue, and Mrs. Frank Wine began
the group the Republican Women’s Club of Bexar County. The suffragist activists
immediately began working on campaigns, particularly the Harding-Coolidge-
Wurzbach ticket.
By 1950, the club changed its name to the Bexar County Republican Women’s Club.
Where today they are still extremely active. In the 2014 election cycle the club vol-
unteered more than 169,000 hours. The most in the state of Texas. BCRW is the
oldest chartered club in Texas and will celebrate their 100th birthday in 2020.
It might have taken 70 years, but women never faltered when fighting for this
cause. But women didn’t just fight for the right to vote. They’ve exercised that right
and today women have become instrumental to the success of Republican Candi-
dates.
The Republican Party is the party for women. There is no war on women here. Just women willing to take the fight to the cause they feel most passionate about. Here is to another 97 years of women exercising their voice and standing up for the values we American’s hold so dear. (Sources 1 and 2 page 8)

VOLUNTEERS GET IT DONE
Whether its volunteering for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts or the Salvation Army many organizations solidly depend on volunteers and Your Bexar GOP is no exception.
In July alone there were more than 613 hours of treasured time donated by people just like you. This is like having four full-time employees. In 2016, each volunteer hour was valued of $23.07. That is more than $14,000 in July donations alone!
As great as those numbers are we know many more of you are volunteering and you haven’t gotten credit for those hours. “How can I count my hours, Robert?”, you ask?
The Legacy Pro app is a great way to keep track. Once you download the app you just Check in and out every time you volunteer for a Republican cause. Find it in your APP store.
That’s it...that’s all there is to it. This is particularly helpful for TFRW members.
Without our volunteers we would not be able to maintain headquarter operations like we have year round. Many counties are open only during the primary season. Your Bexar GOP operates year round.
I want to give a particular shout out to Vivian Brown and Susan Solcher. Combined they have more than 2000 hours logged on the app. It’s these kind of volunteers that make all difference. Whether its Hurricane Relief or an Election Cycle. Volunteers get it done!

MEDIA FAIRNESS CAUCUS A Look at Media Bias
Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), Chairman
Gallup: Less than 3 in 10 have “confidence” in newspapers From Washington examiner… “According to Gallup, less than three in 10 Americans have ‘confidence in TV news and newspa-pers.’” 27% have confidence in newspapers and 25% in TV news.
CBS, NBC Censor Murder at Hands of Illegal Immigrant From Newsbusters… A 17-year-old Muslim girl, Nabra Hassanen, was beaten to death by her attacker, Darwin Mar-tinez Torres, in an act of road rage. ICE announced that he was an illegal immigrant from El Salva-dor. NBC and CBS ignored the story. ABC hyped it as a possible “hate crime” – even though police dismissed that motive – and left out the attacker’s illegal immigrant status from their report. Rasmussen: Just 4% say media like Trump, 50% say biased From Washington Examiner… “[A Rasmussen] survey found that just 4% of voters believe that the press leans in favor of Trump, while 50% said that there is bias against the president.”
CNN Describes “Allahu abkar” as “something in Arabic” From IJR… During an attack on a police officer at a Michigan airport, the attacker screamed “Allahu akbar”, a phrase used by many jihadists during terrorist attacks meaning “God is great”. CNN reported it as “Michigan airport subject said something in Arabic before stabbing officer.”
Editor: Ivanka is Anti-Woman Because She Wore Pink Dress From the Federalist… Joan Walsh, Editor of Salon, on MSNBC “slammed Ivanka Trump’s dress choice at a G-20 sum-mit meeting calling it ‘ornamental’, and saying it hearkened back to a time where daughters were shown off as nothing more than the property of their fathers. Walsh added that Ivanka could not possibly fight for women’s equality while wearing a pink dress with bows on the sleeves.” But, back in 2012 when Michelle Obama wore a pink dress to the DNC Convention. Walsh said the impression she made to women “demonstrated empathy with their day-to-day economic struggles.”
Two-thirds of Americans say news media has negative impact From The Washington Times… “A wide ranging new survey from the Pew Research Center finds that two-thirds of Americans now say the news media has had a ‘negative impact on the U.S.’ – rating the press at the bottom of a list of national institutions.”
NYT’s Big Trump Jr. Scoops Contain a Key Disclaimer From the Daily Caller… “Two scoops from The New York Times on a meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer contain a key disclaimer about five paragraphs deep clarifying there is still ‘no evidence’ of collusion.” It appears they were trying to bury that the meeting may amount to nothing more than opposition research from a foreigner, which is neither illegal nor unprecedented.

Joe Straus represents Texas House District 121 in Bexar County and serves as the Speak-er of the Texas House of Repre-sentatives.
The special legislative session that ended last week gave the Texas House a chance to
work on some of our top priorities. Ultimately, some efforts were more successful than
others. But that's how legislating often goes: You achieve what you can and you keep
working for the next opportunity to get something done.
Retired teachers' health care: The Legislature directed $212 million toward help-
ing the retired teachers who have seen the most severe increases in their health insur-
ance deductibles, premiums, and other expenses.
Public education: We provided additional funding to help school districts facing
severe fiscal challenges, and we designated extra dollars to help schools educate stu-
dents with autism and dyslexia. Unfortunately, the Texas Senate blocked our attempt to
put another $1.5 billion into public education over the next two years. The funding that
the Senate blocked would have helped nearly every school district and it would have
reduced the amount of local property tax dollars that school districts send to the state
through Robin Hood. This was a setback, but the House will continue to prioritize a
better school finance system for students and taxpayers.
Property taxes: The House voted to put new limits on property-tax growth and give
property owners better information about appraisals and the setting of local tax rates.
In the session's short time span, we did not reach final agreement with the Senate on
this issue.
Annexation: Residents of unincorporated areas near large cities will now have a vote
on whether they want to be annexed. We worked closely with city officials in San Anto-
nio to include a buffer zone around military bases in order to protect those bases from
development.
Maternal mortality: We passed a bill to extend the life of the Maternal Mortality and
Morbidity Task Force. Texas has an alarmingly high maternal mortality rate, and this
task force will continue to look at ways to reduce pregnancy-related deaths in Texas.
Thank you for your input on these issues and others that we addressed in the special
session. I also want to thank the Members of the Texas House for their many hours of
work. We carefully considered every idea that Governor Abbott put on the agenda, we
listened to constituents, and we acted in the best interest of Texas. Now we will begin to
look at issues that should be addressed when the Legislature meets again in January
2019. As always, I welcome and appreciate your feedback.
Sincerely,
BEXAR COUNTY YR’S HEAD TO THE
TEXAS YOUNG REPUBLICANS
STATE CONVENTION The Bexar County Young Republicans attended the Texas Young Republicans State Convention on August 11-13 in the Woodlands. The Montgomery County Young Republicans hosted the Convention at The Woodlands Waterway Mar-riott Hotel & Convention Center. The Convention kicked-off Friday evening with a welcome reception and dinner at 7:00pm for all delegates.
The motto of this year’s Convention was “Uniting Republicans Across Texas”. Following that theme, the Young Republicans heard presentations on a variety of diversity issues. The discussions focused on how Republicans can unite and celebrate the issues that we agree on while respecting those who might have a different opinion on some subjects. As Haley Barbour at the RNC Convention in 1993 said, “My old boss Ronald Reagan used to say, ‘Somebody who agrees with me 80 percent of the time is a friend and ally, not a 20 percent traitor.’”
At the Texas Young Republicans Convention, Eddie Gallegos discussed a per-spective of activities by the left in Texas. The Log Cabin Republicans of Texas will speak about the LGBT community within The Republican Party and Karen Watson, will speak about the book she authored entitled “Being Black and Re-publican in the Age of Obama”.
Saturday afternoon, delegates convened to discuss and vote on issues im-portant to the Texas Young Republicans. Saturday evening the delegates gath-ered in their semi-formal apparel to attend the Convention Gala and Silent Auction. Part of the proceeds from the silent auction will benefit Lone Survivor Foundation and Montgomery County Women’s Center.
There are also informative speakers at the Convention Gala who will provide updates from Washington DC and the state of the Republican Party of Texas. Texas Young Republicans heard from Special Guest Speakers Congressman Kevin Brady and RPT Chairman James Dickey. The Keynote Speaker was Ra-fael B. Cruz, Pastor and father of Senator Ted Cruz.
Sunday morning the Texas Young Republican Federation Board convened one last time, as delegates disperse back home across the State to share with their County chapter what they learned at this Convention.
Thank you to Montgomery County Young Republicans for hosting a very well organized and informative convention.

The Governor's first called special session of the 85th Legislature is now com-plete. And several important pieces of legislation were passed by both the Sen-ate and the House of Representatives and then signed by the Governor. While some will debate on what was not accomplished, now is the time to look at some important items that were successfully completed. Items that not only are bene-ficial for all Texans, but items that the grassroots asked for in the form of the Republican Party of Texas platform.
First and foremost, the legislation that keeps the states agencies operating in-cluding the medical licensing board, has passed and been signed. This was the reason a special session was required. Without this legislation, there would be no medical review agency to permit doctors to operate.
With all the talk in the media about elections, it was very timely and appropriate that Texas now has stronger laws to crack down on mail-in ballot fraud. It is an important step towards ensuring voter integrity during our elections.
Another critical issue for the Texas grassroots is the right to have a say if your house is about to be annexed by a nearby city. Property owners and residents now have the right for a vote to say if they choose to be annexed or not. This previous abomination of taking areas of land without voter approval ranks right up there with "taxation without representation".
Additionally patient care rights were addressed as the Legislature approved for the Governor's signature a bill to strengthen the penalties for a doctor who will-fully disregards a patient's do-not-resuscitate order. The wishes of the patient are of key concern in this matter, and doctors do not have the right to violate those wishes.
There are other measures that also successfully have been signed by Governor Abbott, but these highlighted issues show that progress has been made in an-swering some of the concerns of the grassroots, as they have called for in the party platform. We look forward to additional gains when the legislature next meets.

Lieutenant Commander, Commander of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 3, U.S.
Navy. Place and date: Philippine waters, 7 December 1941 to 10 April
1942. Entered service at: Texas. Born: 19 August 1911, New York, N.Y. Other
awards: Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Legion of Merit.
Citation:
For extraordinary heroism, distinguished service, and conspicuous gallantry
above and beyond the call of duty as commander of Motor Torpedo Boat Squad-
ron 3, in Philippine waters during the period 7 December 1941 to 10 April 1942.
The remarkable achievement of Lt. Comdr. Bulkeley's command in damaging or
destroying a notable number of Japanese enemy planes, surface combatant and
merchant ships, and in dispersing landing parties and land-based enemy forces
during the 4 months and 8 days of operation without benefit of repairs, overhaul,
or maintenance facilities for his squadron, is believed to be without precedent in
this type of warfare. His dynamic forcefulness and daring in offensive action, his
brilliantly planned and skillfully executed attacks, supplemented by a unique
resourcefulness and ingenuity, characterize him as an outstanding leader of men
and a gallant and intrepid seaman. These qualities coupled with a complete dis-
regard for his own personal safety reflect great credit upon him and the Naval
Service .
