REPRESENTATIVE POLICY

Many Pathways. No Limits.

Page 2: REPRESENTATIVE POLICY - bellbirdparkssc.eq.edu.au

The core business of BPSSC is teaching and learning. In order to maximise student achievement and focus on effort in their studies, there is a need to set minimum benchmarks for students to participate in extracurricular activities and/or represent the College outside our grounds. We believe that it is important to set high expectations of students in relation to academic completion and attendance, effort and behaviour in order for us to achieve.

RATIONALE

This Representative Policy is designed to:• Reinforce positive expectations at BPSSC.• Encourage students to focus on succeeding in their learning.• Urge students to find a balance between their learning and extracurricular involvement.• Ensure all students representing BPSSC within the school and wider-community consistently demonstrate BPSSC

expectations.

PURPOSE

• Any student awarded Needs Attention or Unsatisfactory ratings in either effort/behaviour, in three or more subject areas on reporting.

• Students with < 90% attendance.• As per suspension requirements, any student currently on an external suspension is not permitted to participate in any

Representative events, or attend as a spectator.

REASON FOR PLACEMENT ON THE NON-REP LIST

Students in the Senior Phase of Learning have the following additional requirements to ensure they are engaged in their learning and remain on track for their chosen pathway:• Year 11 and 12 students who are identified as ‘QCE at Risk’ (Queensland Certificate of Education) by the Senior Schooling

Department during college tracking junctures will be placed on the non-representative list.• Year 10-12 students who are not up to date with VET (Vocational Education and Training) competencies and work

placements will remain on the non-representative list until they have caught up and successfully completed outstanding work/tasks.

• Year 11 and Year 12 students who have been placed on the Stage 1 Cancellation of Enrolment Process will remain on the non-representative list until the student has successfully removed themselves from the cancellation process and meet representative policy requirements.

SENIOR SECONDARY ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

1. The Non-Representative List will be published to the college community every 5 weeks, e.g. Week 2 and 7 of each term.2. Students placed on the Non-Representative List are notified in writing at each of the junctures as outlined above.3. Students remain on the Non-Representative List until they improve their classroom effort and behaviour or attendance

as per their individual profile within a 5 week period.4. Students will receive their ‘Student Data Profile’ or ‘Student Attendance Data’ at regular junctures in a term via their

pathways teachers to assist in their own personal reflections and goal setting. 5. The Non-Representative List will be published for all staff and will be accessible via SharePoint, and updated per the

junctures outlined above. All staff who are working with students on representative activities are required to regularly check the master list to screen participants.

IMPLEMENTATION

• We care about our students here at BPSSC and we understand that some of our students/families have experienced extenuating circumstances that have prevented them from attending school for a period of time throughout the representative policy cycle.

• Extenuating circumstances are usually personal or health problems which are outside of a student’s control and have a negative impact upon their ability attend such as a medical condition, illness, accident, physical impairment or disability (supported by a medical certificate) or serious family problems (death in the family).

• Heads of Year and Deputy Principals in consultation with college Guidance Officers will review student absences and remove any students from the non-representative list who have communicated extenuating circumstances to the college.

Students in the Senior Phase of Learning have additional requirements to ensure they are engaged in their learning and remain on track for their chosen pathway. Their placement on this list will result in them being unable to represent the college at external and internal events (including interschool sport), nor attend any non-compulsory excursion. For a detailed list of how placement on the list will affect students please read the policy documents.

You have been PLACED ON the Non-Representative List. Please refer to the ‘Student Data Profile’ attached for further details.

Students are able to reflect on their current position on the Non-Representative list and set goals as part of the ‘Student Data Profile’. Data is reviewed every five weeks to support student engagement and improvement. Students will be notified in writing in regards to their removal from the Non-Representative List.
