  • 1. Representation- Ugly Betty Mise-en-scene and Camera angles

2. Wilhelmina Mise-en-scene: This is a screenshot of Wilhelmina. Her body position on the chair shows that she is a powerful authority in the show, the fact that she can lounge around while shes a work alludes to the audience that she is in a position do so. The expensive food by her shows that she lives a luxurious lifestyle. It also represents that she is above everyone else. While her colleagues eat cafeteria food or purchase lunch at a high street shop she has a gourmet meal made and delivered to her, this show superiority. Her attire also represents to her being rich and living a high quality of life. Camera angles: This is wide shot and unlike the shot of Amanda and Betty where you can only see half of their bodies, of Wilhelmina body is in the shot, once again showing that she is above everyone else. The wide shot enables the audience to see evidence that she is at her place of work, this allows them to come up with the conclusion that despite the fact work is meant to be a stressful environment she is relaxing and being smothered in luxuries. 3. Amanda Mise-en-scene: This screen shot was taken in the mode building, this is where the majority of the show Is filmed. Amanda is the receptionist and she works in a small circular open office. This could represent that her life aspirations are limited, she is trapped in the cycle of coming to mode, taking phone calls and passing on messages to higher authorities. Her attire is smart casual but I wouldnt go as far to say that it is sophisticated. This could represent that she is trying to lead an upper class lifestyle but hasnt got the funds to do so, so she mixes and matches sophisticated looking clothes so she can feel like she fits in with the mode society. Camera angles: They are essentially two camera shots used in this screen shot. There is a wide shot of background itself and mid of marc and Amanda. This could represent that they are small fishes in a big pond. That they have entered a world which is much greater themselves, hence why there are fragmented. 4. Betty Mise-en-scene: This screenshot was taken when the workers at mode were taking part in a sponsored sports day competition. The fact that Betty I wearing a mode shirt and there is a mode hat above her could represent that she is consumed by her work. Her facial expression connotes that she is exhausted or worried about something. Both of these factors could represent that she tired from working, she feels like everything and everyone's problems are being piled on top oh her. The fact that she is positioned on the floor could represent that she is the under dog in the industry. Camera angles: This is a mid shot and like the previous picture of Amanda you can only see half of her body. The director may have done this so the audience could clearly see Bettys facial expressions. Alternatively this mid shot could have been used to represent that we havent yet met the full Betty, that there is more to be revealed about her, and instead of giving it all away at once they want to give it to the audience in gradual stages. (Progression through the series).
