Types of Social Classes

• Working Class- The working Class of which are stereotyped as hard working, low paid workers. In TV Drama’s the working class show community values and they do not reflect how it is in reality

• Middle Class – are generally portrayed as well educated and successful, Newspapers normally aim their articles at Middle Class, a lot of sitcoms are about middle Class people and families.

• Upper Class- represented through their accents, estates and stereotypically hunting, in TV Drama’s they are usually represented in the way they dress, speak and their choice in food.

Working Class Represented in TV DramasWorking Class people are misrepresented in TV Dramas, the shows shown on TV do not show reflect the reality of working class people.

On shows like Shameless and Hollyoaks the working class are represented as benefit scroungers and people who are unable cope with their day to day lives. sometimes working class people are shown going to loan sharks to borrow money and not be able to pay the money back. But TV Drama’s over exaggerate the working class people.

How are the Middle Class Represented in TV Drama’s?

• The middle Class are portrayed as successful people and people who can cope with paying bills and general day to day duties. Stereotypically in shows middle class families are shown as well educated and successful group of people, BBC showed a show called “My Family” which was about a successful father who is a dentist and who wanted is kids to move out as soon as possible.

Upper Class in TV Drama’s

• A lot of TV Dramas are normally represented in Period Dramas like “Downtown Abbey”. Downtown Abbey is a perfect example of upper class representation the way they dress, their manners and the food they eat isstereotypically the type of the upper class generally eat.

Working Class Clip This clip shows the stereotype for the working Class, money problems, hating the queen and sitting and the Pub with a pint of beer and living in terracing housing.

The actors which feature in the downtown abbey clip, dress smart wearing suits and classy dresses, and the scene when the woman is holding a cup of tea is stereotyped because she’s holding a saucer and the cup which we stereotype the upper class to do.

Middle Class ClipIn this clip from the BBC show “My Family” shows the family dressing like a middle class family, and they show no sign of unable to pay bills or seem to be in any trouble. The show fits the stereotype for Middle Class.
