Representation of Bring Me The Horizon
ISSUE 1473, KERRANG!
The representation of Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH) in Kerrang! Issue 1473, is a bit different
to the other issues representation of them. This issue doesnt just focus on Oli, although
there are still some images and the text which are focused on him, this represents that the
band have come closer together and that the media is now focusing on the band as a whole
rather than just Oli. The representation of BMTH on the front cover displays them as a more
subtle band, which is controversial to their music. This representation could symbolise that
they have matured a bit now they are a little bit older (mid 20s). This representation has
occurred as they all have a straight face and arent doing something silly. Oli is still in the
centre and is bending down very slightly, this represents that he is still the leader and main
guy in BMTH. The representations of BMTH in the article is much more laid back and go
with the flow than the older articles which have included BMTH. This symbolises that they
are much happier with the way the band is represented and that they are happy with their
music production.
All of the members in BMTH are male, so the whole issue is heavily male based. Males are
represented in this article as successful as music artists, they are represented in this way
throughout the magazine. Males are also represented as chick magnets if they have an edgy
look to them like Oli Skyes and all of BMTH members. This is portrayed through the images
as most of the crowd you can see are females and there is an image of Oli with his armaround a fan. There is also the sexual representation of BMTH as Oli on the front cover is
bending down slightly, pouting and looks luring. All the members have a luring look but Olis
is the most dominant. Olis dominance on the front cover adds to the representation of him
being the leader and the one in control. Males appear heavily in this issue, this can
represent that the most bands which have the most success in this sort of music industry
are mostly male or are all male members.
The age representation of BMTH is very much party while your young as they are always
seen as enjoying themselves in images but they are now getting older and the images arebecoming calmer, along with their music. They are all around the same age so this
represents that you get along and produce the best outcomes with people of the same age
as you. BMTH are all now mid 20s illustrating that you can still have fun even when you
have passed the 21 stage. This representation is illustrated through the images of the
concert with the jokey captions which Kerrang have added. The images which show the
concert can be a representation of fun as the target audience for Kerrang would find
concerts amazing and fun.
In the article the representation of BMTHs image changes slightly as you understand why
they are made to look more mature and happy with the way the band is. This is due to the

articles nature, Oli talks about how he used to bein a bad place and that he wasnt sure if
the band was going to stay together at one point but now hes happy and the band has
never been closer. The representation of BMTH as an overall seems to be that there is more
to them then what the media shows, asjust looking at the images you dont get the full
representation but once reading the text everything becomes clear.
