LordeKey Facts:

In this photo Lorde is empowered with bold, voluminous curls and porcelain skin and her attire suggests sophistication as she has little skin showing. The plain backdrop removes any distractions making her the main attraction. This could be to represent her as a powerful goddess which links to her stage name. This photo is in black and white which means no part of the image is accentuated by the colours. In this photo, the close up and framing means the hair keeps going out of shot making it look more rich and voluminous. As it is taken from straight ahead, there is a personal connection to her directly but the slight low angle results in an inferior feeling which only empowers her further.

This photo also empowers Lorde with her naturally big curls and her clothes which are sophisticated (again) with long sleeves on a fully buttoned up shirt. The white colour could suggest purity linking back to her stage title. The dark backdrop contrasts with her pale skin and white shirt but also prevents associations with other objects or people. Although this photo is in full colour the image has a low saturation which gives the photographer more control over what looks accentuated. This then results in her blue eyes standing out and increases the direct connection between her and the audience. The mid shot shows us from her wait upwards but he only fills the middle third of the photo. This could show her isolation or loneliness but her confident expression makes us think that she is comfortable here. The photo has been taken straight on with Lorde sat or stood facing forward. Her head tilted downwards looks slightly mysterious and her proper posture makes her appear superior.

Compared to the 2 previous photos this is a little more down to earth. Like in most photos of Lorde she still has her big natural hair and staring expression facing forward. This image is slightly different because there is a lot more colour but she is still wearing a high necked top continuing her innocent persona. The framing of the image is not dissimilar to a school portrait which may have been done to reflect her young age. This photo reminds me a lot of portraiture paintings from the 1600s where women were painted expressionless.

In Conclusion…In all of the photos of Lorde, she is portrayed as classy, gracious and innocent. This is because

most of these photos were taken before she was 18 (07.11.14). However her age has not defined her appearance completely as she has avoided the, sometimes tacky looking, Disney teen-star

look and achieved a mature prestige.
