Re: 2013 CSCHE Student Chapter Merit Awards Application
The McMaster University Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Club (Chem Eng Club) would
like to express its interest in applying for the 2013 Student Chapter Merit Award. The Chem Eng Club
has a total of 22 dedicated undergraduate student members (Appendix A) that strive to carry out the goals
set by the club at the beginning of the year which are; to liaise between a student population of 368
undergraduate students in Chemical Engineering and the Faculty, promote volunteering and fund raising
opportunities within the Hamilton community, ensure new students have an easy transition into their
programs and all students are getting the best educational experience through social and scientific events
listed in Appendix B. The club promotes conferences, competitions, events and services provided by the
CSCHE, ESSCO and the AICHE and are very involved with the Hamilton CIC chapter.
There are several networking opportunities presented through industry tours as well as guest
lecturers that visit McMaster. The Chem E Car team is a student based team that has flourished over the
last 4 years and has even gained recognition and group status from the Mc Master Engineering Society.
The faculty has supported the club greatly and invite two representatives from the club annually to bring
up any issues faced by the students with which they respond quickly to administer any changes if need be.
Included below is a detailed journal on the various groups, events and conferences that have taken
place between September 2012 and May 2013. A lot of the events in this application are repeated as per
tradition. Notes from the previous president have been reviewed to avoid redundant mistakes. The
successful events were repeated this year and newer events replaced events that were not so successful.
This continuity between transitioning club members ensures a smooth running of the club. A chemical
engineering club manual has been written to assist preceding presidents with a detailed report on events of
the club and lessons learned.
This merit award would act as great motivation for the development and implementation of
excellence in our chapter and student community. Thank you for your consideration of the McMaster
Chem Eng Club for the CSChE Student Chapter Merit Award.

Tze Ren (TR) Tang Club Journalist -Responsible for taking pictures of events and documenting
each event
President’s Log of changes: This year the club has utilized Google documents as a means of sharing information between club
members. We implemented a weekly Agenda prior to each meeting. This agenda was able to be edited by
any member on the club and maintained focus at meetings. The introduction of the new position of club
journalist worked out extremely well as the club events are now documented in a standard manner.
The faculty has created a Google calendar that lists all important assignments, midterms and exams for
each chemical engineering course throughout all years. This is updated by the faculty. The club has asked
for this calendar to be shared so that planning events would be easier and is posted on the club’s website
including events that are hosted by the club.

Appendix B: Events
Social Events Second Year Welcome and Rep Selection September 2012 In order to introduce the Chem Eng Club to as many new chemical engineering students as possible, the
Club approached the second year class and performed a song “If I were in hem Eng” adapted from the
Bare naked Ladies’ “If I had a Million Dollars”. The second years were then informed of the role of the
Chem Eng Club, the Welcome Back BBQ, and of the two Rep positions available. A week later, 6
students had self-nominated themselves for Rep positions, and the Club assisted the class with the
election process. The song lyrics can be found in Appendix C.
Meet the Profs September 25th The club organizes a free pizza and pop lunch for 2 hours where students from all years have a chance to
meet professors within the faculty. This year’s turnout was fantastic. There were 11 professors present
and approximately 80 students that passed through the room within the 2 hour period.
Welcome Back BBQ, Frost Week BBQ September 25th, Jan 16th Every year the Chem Eng Club hosts 2 BBQs for all chemical engineering students. One takes place at
the beginning of the fall term and the other takes place at the beginning of the winter term. The emphasis
is on encouraging second year students to come socialize, and free food and beverages are provided. This
year about 55 students attended the events.

Smoker I & II (Faculty and Student Social) November 6th, Feb27th This historical event encourages interaction between students of all years and the faculty and was held at
Kelsey’s. Dr. Zhu, the department head, presented a departmental update, and students were given
opportunities to talk to the faculty in attendance.
McMaster Chemical Engineering Club http://chemeng.mcmaster.ca 2013
The Club charged two dollars to all students, except for those who participated in the blood drive, and the
event was a success for the 60 students and 5 faculty members who mingled while enjoying appetizers.
Figure 3: Smoker 1 and 2 at the local Kelsey’s
Chem Eng Rock Climbing November 13th This is social and athletic event for all chemical engineering students hosted by the Club. The highlight of
the trip for the students in attendance was the participation of the Faculty Advisor (Dr. Dickson). This
year we only had 2 people show up unfortunately, however, the event was still run.
Nondenominational Winter Break Holiday Dinner November 28th This event is the last event of the fall semester, and is held at Boston Pizza, where the Club is provided
with unlimited pizza and wings at a set price. This year, 24 students were present for the festivities.
Casino Trip to Niagara Falls January 26th The club organizes a bus to Niagara Falls and back and sells tickets 2 weeks before the event. Students
are free to visit the Casino, enjoy the Falls, shop or site see for the night and then get on the bus back to
McMaster later in the evening. Unfortunately, due to a snow storm, this event had to be cancelled and
everyone was reimbursed.
Christmas Movie Night Dec 2nd
17 Students came out to watch popular festive movies such as Home Alone and A Christmas story over
some pizza, pop and hot chocolate. A lecture hall was booked and the projector was used to create a
movie theatre atmosphere. This event had great feedback and will be hosted next year as well.
Club Info Session and Transition March – April Class Reps were responsible for encouraging chemical engineering students attend a Chem Eng Club
meeting. At the meeting, each Club member gave a brief speech on their role. Then, to maintain the
Club’s success, new students and current Club members nominated themselves for the positions. Class
elections were held, and all voting was done online. There was a huge interest in the club, and many
positions had several people competing for them. A transition meeting was held, and many plans for next
year’s Chem Eng Club are already underway. The election results stated that over 28% percent of the
chemical engineering students participated in the voting process.

Sports Teams Year Round The Chem Eng Club facilitates several intramural teams each year based on demand. The most popular
ones include, Co-Rec Soccer (12 students) in the fall and a volleyball team (12 students). The Sports Rep
registers the teams, and is reimbursed through the McMaster Engineering Society. This year we also had a
drop-in pool night (20 students) which was opened to all students in chemical engineering.
Roast the Profs Apr 3rd Roast the Profs is a unique event held every year during the last week of classes. This year 80 students
and 8 faculty members gathered for dinner and a laugh, as students write and perform songs, host game
shows such as Jeopardy, and perform skits or presentations while roasting professors. The new president
and club are also introduced, and the new president makes a small speech during the event.
Figure 4: Kelsey's was packed with a crowd of approximately 80 people while students roasted their professors
Community Events Engineering Blood Drive I & II October, February The Chem Eng Club participated in a semi-annual engineering blood drive. Volunteers were asked to fill
out a sign-up sheet. To encourage participation, anyone who donated blood was given a free ticket to the
corresponding Smoker. Both events were very successful, with 8 and 15 chemical engineering students
participating in each blood drive respectively.
Charity Hot Yoga Night Last Friday of the month Sept to March This is social and athletic event for all chemical engineering students at Moksha Yoga on a Friday night.
Students pay a minimum $7 donation and the proceeds go to the Ronald McDonald Children’s Charity.
The event was well received.
Pi Day March 14th This event was initiated by the Chem Eng Club, and supported by the entire engineering student body.
The event was to celebrate Pi Day, and people could sign up to be ‘pi’ed and ‘pi’ their fellow participants
at 1:59 on March 14th. A total of approximately $2000 was raised in support of the Hamilton Ronald
McDonald House.

Cooking for a Change November29th This event was hosted by a local Church in the community. 8 students attended this event and got a
chance to learn how to cook gourmet meals with a low budget. The meals were then eaten at a banquet
hall with some musical entertainment.
Academic Events
McMaster University - Zhejiang University Summer Abroad Summer 2012 In the summer of 2012 Andrew Ojo Toye, a Chemical Engineering student had the remarkable
opportunity to travel to China to conduct research with the department of Chemical and Biological
Engineering at Zhejiang University. The university is located in Hangzhou, the picturesque capital of
Zhejiang province famous for its scenery and history. The goal of Andrew’s project was to synthesize and
characterize high performance polyolefin-based thermoplastic elastomers. The elastomers were high
molecular weight copolymers with better physical and chemical properties than currently available
polymers. Many students from other universities participated in this exchange program recognizing the
benefits of gaining international experience and the opportunity for professional and personal growth. The
students were from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Western Ontario. The mix
of students enhanced problem solving by bringing together diverse perspectives and created a unique
work environment. The experience has changed Andrew and broadened his horizons by improving his
knowledge of a foreign language, improving hia specialist knowledge by conducting leading research at a
top Chinese Institute, and establishing international connections. The Chemical Engineering Department
and undergraduate club strive to give students opportunities to get a broader understanding of their
discipline and encourage them to explore their passions and interest.

Intellipharmaceutics Tour Sept 26th A bus was chartered by the club to send 15 students to Intellipharmaceuticals in Toronto. The company is
involved with research, development, and commercialization of controlled-release and targeted
pharmaceutical products. The event was deemed successful based on feedback.
Air Liquide Tour Mar 1st This event was held during a busy week of school and required students to take the city bus to a local Air
Liquide plant. We had only 4 people that were able to make it out to this tour.
CIC Monsaroff Student Paper Night February 6th The Monsaroff Student Paper Night was introduced in the 1960’s in recognition of Boris Monsaroff, an
industrial chemist/chemical engineer and author, who lived and worked in Hamilton for more than 30
years. Mr. Monsaroff played a leading role in the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC), and maintained a
vigorous interest in science and economics, and was deeply concerned with the impact of scientific
development on economic and political policies.
The Hamilton section of the CIC organized this student paper night in order to foster student interest in
developing communication skills and using these skills to transmit knowledge to a general audience.
Since its creation, two students from McMaster Chemistry, Mohawk Chemical Technology and
McMaster Engineering have gathered in front of interested students, faculty and friends to share
knowledge. Students submit a presentation on a topic of their choice, and from these submissions, 2
students are selected from each faculty to make an oral presentation to their peers, the general public and
a panel of judges composed of industry employees and professors. This year, the event was hosted by
McMaster Chemistry at Kelsey’s, and completely sponsored by the local CIC chapter. There were 2
chemical engineering students that participated in the competition, Sean Mercer 4th year and Matthew
LeFeuvre 2nd
year.

Departmental Meeting February 11th The Club president and vice president participated in a departmental meeting to give feedback to the
faculty on behalf of the students. This includes reviews of previous items discussed, program
improvement, student feedback and faculty concerns. This shows the chemical engineering students that
their faculty values the opinions of the Club, and therefore the students the Club represents.
Program Info Sessions for 1st Years February - March 2013
This is a general info session to help first years pick their specialties. Chem Eng volunteers and faculty
members represent the chemical engineering booth and provide a student and instructor perspective on the
program, its benefits, and potential career paths. Pizza is provided to encourage attendance. About 8
volunteers from chemical engineering attended and acted as mentors for the 1000 first year students that
attend the sessions over the two month period.

MacLab Initiative January 2013 The McMaster Laboratory Advancement Benefaction (macLAB) Endowment Fund was a project initiated
by the McMaster Engineering Society (MES) in 1997, in response to an increasing need to renew and
update the undergraduate engineering laboratory facilities. This year the chemical engineering department
requested funding from macLAB to expand and enrich the student laboratory experience. The Chemical
Engineering Club worked closely with faculty to prepare the funding request. The proposal was
successfully defended and will result in the expansion polymer processing equipment that students have
access to during their upper year lab courses.

Conferences 2012 CSCHE Conference October 16
th - 19
th
28 delegates from McMaster’s undergraduate Chemical Engineering Department attended the Canadian
Chemical Engineering Conference for five days in Vancouver, BC. The conference provided an
opportunity for networking amongst other undergraduate students, graduate students, professors, and
industry professionals from across Canada. The year’s conference hosted a wide variety of academic
sessions addressing issues pertaining to the theme: biotechnology. Four of McMaster’s professors, Dr.
Adams, Dr. Cranston, Dr. Yu and Dr. Swartz, joined us at the conference to present their research. One
of the delegates, Sean Mercer, comments: “It was great to support McMaster students’ and professors’
research while also seeing how their work fits into the big picture across other schools and industry”. As
well as academic sessions there was a graduate school fair and industry mixer. These events provided
students with the opportunity to inquire about further education and employment options. It was a great
chance to apply for jobs or receive feedback on resumes from real employers. At the undergraduate
student banquet, McMaster received two awards. Club vice-president Sean Johnstone received the CSChE
Local Section Scholarship recognizing leadership, academic performance, and participation in the
engineering community. This award is presented to two students from across Canada each year and in
recent years has also been awarded to other McMaster students, namely Jervis Pereira and Sharleen
Weatherly. The Chemical Engineering Club chapter was also recognized for its excellence by winning
the Student Chapter Merit Award. This award is presented to the school whose club shows the highest
level of student involvement with the most events as well as the highest diversity of events. McMaster’s
Chem Eng Club strives to win this award every year and has been successful numerous times in the past.
In Fact, the CSChE conference is so popular within McMaster that the club has appointed 3 positions as
conference reps that work year round to organize and market this event to the entire faculty. We already
have 28 delegates confirmed to the next conference in New Brunswick, 2013.

Chem-E Car Team at the AICHE Conference May 22-23rd
This year the Chem-E Car Team was able to increase their involvement within the McMaster Community.
The team volunteered in engineering outreach events such as McMaster's May at Mac Open House,
engineering Olympics and clubs-fest and were also able to obtain team status in the McMaster
Engineering Society.
After a year of hard work, the team was able to send two cars, Steamliner and Alf to the AIChE Regional
Conference at the University of Cincinnati on March 22nd-23rd. Steamliner was composed of a hobby
steam engine which propelled the vehicle mechanically and carbon dioxide was produced from a
chemical reaction to power the piston of the engine. Alf was a modification of our previous vehicles and
was electrically powered by a hydrogen PEM fuel cell. Hydrogen gas was produced through a chemical
reaction, and purified and dehydrated through a desiccant chamber before being feed into the fuel cell.
The vehicle was stopped by controlling a iodine stop clock reaction. Both teams tied 6th out of 16 teams
at the competition, and Steamliner won the "Most Creative Drive System" Award.
We were very grateful for all the sponsorship and support we received from our sponsors: CIC, Cameco,
Paul Galachiuk and the McMaster Chemical Engineering Department and faculty. More information
about the team's vehicles and progress can be found on the website at:
http://chemeng.mcmaster.ca/chem_e_car/mainpage.html.

ESSCO AGM (Engineering Student Societies’ Council of Ontario, Annual General Meeting)
May 23-26th
The Chem Eng Club sent two students to the ESSCO AGM in 2013, the club’s incoming president and
the MES Chemical Engineering representative. The conference included many sessions and workshops
geared towards improving the professionalism and effectiveness of the participants in their activities as
student leaders. The sessions included workshops on how to build an effective team, run better meetings,
networking and similar professional skills, and improve motivation. Another session included tips on
creating better student-faculty relations so that events and other important activities involving both sides
work well. The conference also allowed an opportunity for our Chem Eng Club to hear from other schools
on their events, and to bring back new ideas for the coming year. Further, the conference also acted to
build a good working relationship between the Chem Eng Club and the McMaster Engineering Society

Keep On Rockin’ in Chem Eng by Jervis Pereira (To the tune of Rocking in the Free World by Neil Young) I just walk into class
Sit right at the back
People opening their books
People glad to be at Mac
But then he walks in, With an LCBO bag
There's a lot of people thinkin' , what he keeps in that bag
He puts his hand in the bag, And grabs a pile of notes
puts one foot on the desk, And teaches us about fluids.
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng,
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng,
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng.
He rides his Vespar to School
difference insignificant
Now he pulls out a marker, cool
it was black and permanent
as he writes on the white board, not knowing what he’d done
Designed his experiments, confound them into one
He ran out of space and he couldn’t erase
borrowed some acetone and left without a trace
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng,
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng,
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng.
I had this question to do,
A few years ago,
It was assignment 2,
Set by Dr. Hoare
Design a heat exchanger that will dissipate,
Heat from its center at steady state
You could use shell and tube, surrounded with fins
After 3 sleepless nights, I got my half percent
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng,
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng,
Keep on rockin' in Chem Eng.

Drops of Ethanol
by Chad Glen
(To the tune of Drops of Jupiter by Train)
Here comes an end to another year,
And drops of ethanol make me impair-air-aired.
I drink all night and learn all day,
Making my hair go Dickson gray, aye aye aye
I want to go home and enjoy my brew,
But Cranston said mix Borox with glue, aye aye aye
Aye aye aye aye
Tell me, is your name Kevin Dunn?
Making models and providing values that are estimated
Knowing COST is overrated
Tell me, could you solve this PFR?
If you never had Mhaskar,
And can you get any rest while waiting for your ring to wear
Now Dr. Adams has my admiration,
For letting his chops grow for that duration, aye aye aye
Dunn checks out pie charts while saying oh no,
Wondering why your ink is low, aye aye aye
Here comes an end to another year,
I’m afraid that Zhu might think of me as,
Plain ol’ chain of an unknown span,
but the molecular weight says a styrene strand.
Tell me, do you know the specific heat,
Did you finally get to pass a class with a whole node array
Yeah, todd hoare is here to stay
Tell me, do you know how enzymes bind?
Did you take bioreactor design?
And can you get any rest while waiting for your ring to wear
Can you imagine no glove, smudge of sludge thickened
Group members always contradicting you, even when you know they’re wrong
Can you imagine a whole class, learn to laplace, no time for relaxation,
Caffeine jitters never got so bad, for me
But tell me, do you think this pickle’s sweet?
Learn about what he hates and growth rates with Filipe
Don’t forget rate of decay
McMaster Chemical Engineering Club http://chemeng.mcmaster.ca 2013
Tell me, do you know Mike Thompson
Did you take 4X and do a bunch of extrusion
Filling molds with strange protrusions
Tell me, have you seen dr. peltons car?
Where him and his dog probably are
And can you get any rest while waiting for your ring
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na na
And can you finally get to attend the end and get your degree
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
And Chem eng is who we are
Chem eng is who we are
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
And one day you will have a ring to wear
