    INTRODUCTION

Group C is a 4 claim group staked to investigate

an isolated, 4 channel, Airborne response. A grid of N-S

lines, spaced at 400 foot intervals, has been cut over the

claims. Surveying has been carried out with magnetics and

electromagnetics over approximately 1.8 line miles of picket

line. The surveying was carried out by the crews of Mattagami

Lake Exploration Limited on March 25th, 1982.

    LOCATION AND ACCESS

The Missanabie area, which for the purpose of this

study, covers thirteen townships, is located about 40 kilo

meters northeast of Wawa and about 208 kilomters' north of

Sault Ste. Marie. The area is readily accessible by road

and rail. The town of Missanabie is accessible by Highway

651 which joins Highway 101 to the south, about 65 km east

of Wawa. The town of Goudreau is accessible from Wawa, via

an indirect route from the north which connects to Highway 11.

Gravel surfaced roads or more commonly rough lumber

ing roads provide access to much of the area from the town of

Missanabie and Goudreau which themselves are not connected.

Missanabie in West township and Lochalsh in the

northwest part of Riggs township, are on the Canadian Pacific

Railway. In the western part of the Missanabie area, the

Algoma Central Railway services Goudreau and Dubreuilville.

  • - 2 -

Group C lies in the SE corner of Jacobson Township

about 4 miles south of the Goudreau Highway.

    GENERAL GEOLOGY

The Missanabie area is predominantly underlain by

rocks of early Precambrian age. Thick and complex volcano

genic accumulations of subaqueous mafic flows and pyroclastic

rocks, felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks, and locally

derived metasediments underlie most of the area. This meta-

volcanic belt is a part of the northeastern extension of the

    Michopicoten metavolcanic-metasedimentary belt. Minor iron

formations are present at the top of the mafic metavolcanic

    sequence.

    Complex grantic batholiths consisting predominantly

of folidated to gneissic granodiorite and trondhjemite, border

and intrude the metavolcanics on the north, northwest and

central south regions of the Missanabie area. Small stocks

and sills of quartz-feldspar porphry and granite, and several

large granodiorite stocks also intrude the metavolcanic units.

A single hornblende syenite stock intrudes the metavolcanics

at the border of Meath and West townships. Probable sills

occur as elongated masses of dioritic rocks in the meta

    volcanics of the southwest townships.

    Both the metavolcanic-metasedimentary sequence and

the granitic batholiths are cut by abundant north to north

west trending diabase dikes, a few northeast trending diabase

dikes a prominent northeast trending quartz diorite dike, a

  • fairly large olivine-rich gabbro stock in Riggs Township, as

well as several small ultramafic stocks and sills.

    Unconsolidated Pleistocene sediments, consisting

of ground and terminal moraine and glaciofluvial and glacio

    lacustrine deposits are extensive.

    The metavolcanic-metasedimentary rocks are metamor

phosed to lower greenschist facies in the interior of the belt

and to high greenschist-lower almancine-amphibolite facies

    near felsic intrusive rocks.

Structural information in the mafic and felsic meta-

volcanic and metasedimentary belt is sufficient for structural

interpretation in only some regions of the Missanabie area.

The identifiable fold pattern appears consistent with the

general folding of the whole Michipicoten belt, however,

locally fold trends have been controlled by and certainly

complicated by the intrusion of granitic rocks.

    SURVEY INSTRUMENTS

A direct reading McPhar Fluxgate instrument was

used to measure the vertical field to an accuracy of 10

    gammas.

An apex MaxMin II electromagnetic unit was used

for the horizontal loop survey. Operating frequencies were

444 and 1777 Hz with a coil separation of 400 feet. The in-

phase and quadrature components were measured to an accuracy

    of l \ o f the primary field.

  • - 4 -

    DISCUSSION OF RESULTS -

A single, short conductor, Zone A has been inter

preted from the electromagnetic data. It displays a depth

of 220 feet at the high frequency, but only 160 feet at the

low. The indicated conductance is 30 mhos at 1777 Hz, but

only 12 mhos at 444 Hz. This may be due to overburden inter

ference but in any case, the lower frequency estimate of 12

mhos is considered the more reliable.

Zone A appears to terminate near 12E where a 1000

gamma magnetic high trends NNW across the grid. The magnetic

high probably indicates a diabase dike and Zone A may term

    inate at this structural feature.

Because of its low conductance and short strike,

Zone A is considered a second priority target.

    SUMMARY S RECOMMENDATIONS

Zone A is a short, E-W trending conductor that

correlates closely with an isolated Airborne Anomaly 710-C.

It does not correlate with any strong magnetic features, but

the west end of Zone A appears to terminate near a strong NNW

magnetic high which probably represents a dike.

Zone A displays a conductance of only 12 mhos and

a strike length of 400 to 600 feet. Consequently, it is regarded

    as a second priority target.
