Inadditiontothekeynoteandinvitedspeakersmentionedabovetherewere36oralcontributions(20minseach)from22malesand14femalesand116posterspresentedanddiscussedovertwospecially-dedicatedsessions.(ii) ScientificHighlights(1pageforIAUwebsite)TheSymposiumopenedwithaKeynoteaddressfromEwinevanDIshoeck(Leiden)inwhichshenotedthatastrochemistryisinaveryhealthystateacrosstheworldwithnewfacilitiescomingon-lineandnewgroupsjoiningthecommunityonaregularbasis.Therewas,however,aneedtoensurethatcurrentsuccessesleadtofuturechallengesthatwillbemetbythecommunityofastronomers,spectroscopists,chemistsandphysiciststhatundertakeastrochemicalresearch.Tothatend,shereviewedsomerecenthighlights,notingtheincreasingcomplexityofmoleculesdetectedinspace,theuseofmoleculestoprobenewregimesindiffusegas,supernovae,externalgalaxies,protoplanetarydisks(PPDs)andexoplanetatmospheres.Sheaskedtheaudiencetoprovidereasonswhynationalagenciesshouldinvestinastrochemistryoverthenext20-30years.Whatarethebigquestionstobeanswered?ResponseshaveinformedherwrittenarticleintheSymposiumproceedings.ManuelAravena(UniversidadDiegoPortales)notedinhisKeynotetalkthatthenumberofmolecularlinesdetectedingalaxieshadincreasedbyalmosttwoordersofmagnitudeinthelastdecadeandthatsub-millimetrelines,particularlyduetothesensitivityofALMA,werenowabletoprobegasphysicsatredshiftsuptoz=7.SergioMartin(JointALMAObservatory)focusedontheprototypicalULIRG,Arp220,fromwhichALMAhasdetectedthousandsoflinesinsurveysfrom86-363GHz.Lineidentificationandanalysisisdifficultduetoseverelineblendingandself-absorption.Thedoublenucleus,oneofwhichmaycontainanAGN,hasbeenresolvedbutthereisnoimprintoftheAGNonmolecularabundances,sincebothnucleiappeartohavesimilarLTEabundancestowithinafactorofthree.ThisisexcitingforourfieldasitclearlyopensanewastrochemicalwindowintotheearlyUniverse.JavierGoioechea(Madrid)spokeontheuseofhighspatialresolutionobservationsofhydridestoprobethephysicsofphoton-dominatedregions.HeshowedthedetectionintheOrionBarofcis-HCOOHwhichliessome10,000Kinenergyhigherthantrans-HCOOH.Hearguedthatthiswasthefirstastronomicalevidenceofacis-transconversiondrivenbyfluorescence.Therewereseveraltalksandpostersonlow-massstarformationandYokoOya(Tokyo)presentedanALMAstudyoftherotating,infallingenvelopeofIRAS16293-2422SourceAanddemonstratedthepowerofchemistrytotracedifferentregionsoftheinfall,inparticularthepositionofthecentrifugalbarrieratwhichthegascompositionappearstobedominatedbytheevaporationproductsoficemantles.ThisworkhighlightstheimportofALMAforourfieldasthechemistryassociatedwithprotostellarcollapsemaybeausefultooltoisolateimportantphases,suchastheyoungdisk.Thisworkisstillinitsinfancyandwecanlookforwardtosignificantadvancesinthecomingyears.ThesubjectoficemantlesisaveryactiveareaoftheoreticalandexperimentalresearchworldwideandHermaCuppen(Radboud)summarisedtheoreticalmodelsofsurface

chemistry,inparticularinrelationtotheformationofcomplexorganicmolecules(COMs).Shearguedthattheformation,diffusionandreactionoftheHCOradicalwascriticalinthedeterminationofmolecularcomplexityintheiceandencouragedlaboratorystudiesofthisradical.LaboratoryastrophysicsisplayinganimportantroleinunderstandingsurfaceandbulkprocessesinicesandtheSymposiumfeaturedmanytalksandpostersonthissubject.TheinteractionoficeswithsoftX-rayswasreviewedbySergioPilling(ValedeParaibe)inakeynotepresentation.HeshowedthatsoftX-rayirradiationofcosmicicemixturesinducedacomplexchemistrythatresultedintheformationofthenucleobaseadenineandpeptidebonds,amongstothers.SusannaWidicusWeaver(Emory)describedanimpressivenewexperimentinwhichthephotolysisproductsofmethanoliceweredetectedusinggas-phasemillimetreandsub-millimetrespectroscopy.Thisopensupanexcitingnewwayinwhichphotodesorptionyieldscanbemeasureddirectlyandwhichcanidentifyproductsthatcannotbedifferentiatedusingconventionalmassspectroscopictechniques.Thisiscertainevidencethatlaboratoryworkismovingindirectionsthatwillcontinuetobecentraltoourfield.Moleculesarealsoimportantintheformationofdustgrainsinsupernovae,circumstellarenvelopesandtheinterstellarmedium(ISM).LeenDecin(Leuven)madethelongtriptoPuertoVarasdespitethehindranceofafull-lengthlegcastfollowingkneesurgerytospeakaboutALMAobservationsofthedust-formingregionsofO-richAGBstars.HeredetectionsofspeciessuchasTiO,TiO2,SiO,AlOandAlOHareaimedatunderstandinghowdustprecursorshelpnucleationandgrowth.ThomasHenning(Heidelberg)presentedevidencefromliquidHedropexperimentsthatSiOmoleculescouldgrowtonanoscaleamorphousclustersat0.37K,givingexperimentalsupporttothehypothesisthatmostsilicatedustmustformintheISMgivenitsfastdestructiontimescaleinsupernovaeexplosions.Asignificantpartoftheprogramwasdevotedtolow-massstarformationandPPDSandSatoshiYamamoto(Tokyo)presentedaKeynotetalkwhichshowedtheimportanceofmoleculesintracingthedynamicsinsuchregions.TherewerealsoseveraltalksonPPDsincludingwaysinwhichtodeterminethewatersnowline(Merelvan’tHoff,Leiden),observationsofCOMs(KarinOberg,HarvardandCatherineWalsh,Leeds),gapsandrings(IlseCleeves,Harvard),graingrowthanddynamics(StefanoFacchini,Munich),diskmassesandcarbondepletion(MelissaMcClure,Munich),dustintransitiondisks(SimonCasassus,Univ.Chile)andisotopicchemistry(VivianaGuzman,JointAstronomyCentreandRuudVisser,Munich).OneofthehighlightsofthissessionweretheamazingimagesfromALMAwhereitisclearthatthechemistryassociatedwithplanetformationisslowlybeingrevealed.KathrinAltwegg(Bern)presentedaninformativeandentertainingKeynoteaddressonthemolecular‘zoo’detectedbytheRosettaMissionatcomet67P/CG.HertalkcoveredahugerangeoftopicsfromtheobservationthatthecometdoesnothaveasolarXeisotopicdistribution,totheconclusionthatcometsdidnotsupplytheEarth’swater,andthatitsO2islikelyinheritedfrominterstellarice.OuraudiencesatstunnedatthevastarrayofmoleculesdetectedbyRosettaandwesuspectthatmanyareexcitedtotakeadvantageofthisexcitingfield.VianneyTaquet(Leiden)discussedtheformationofO2insomedetailandarguedthattheonlymodelconsistentwithlaboratoryexperimentsandobservationsoftheISMand67P/CGwasoneinwhichitformedathighdensityinicesat15-25Ktoensure

thatOatomsaremobileintheicematrix.MariaDrozdovskeya(Bern)discussedthe67P/CGresultsinthecontextofthePILSsurveyoftheprotostar,IRAS16293-2422notingthatmethylchloride,CH3Cl,hadbeendetectedinboth.NikkuMadhusudhan(Cambridge)presentedanin-depthreviewofthechemistryinexoplanetatmospheresnotingthatinadditiontospeciessuchasH2OandCO2,therewasevidenceemergingforthepresenceofamoreexoticchemistry.Hearguedthatadvancesinobservationaltechniquesandnewapproachestotheoreticalmodellingwereabletoprovidesignificantconstraintsonthepropertiesoftheseatmospheres.Heshowed,asanexample,thattheH2OabundanceisverysensitivetotheinitialC/Oratioatthepositioninthediskatwhichtheplanetformsandthatsub-solarabundancesimpliedthatplanetshadbescatteredoutandbackintothedisk.Heconcludedbynotingthatamajortaskfortheexoplanetarychemistrywastodevelopacommunitysimilartothatcurrentinastrochemistry.Lookingforward,thechemicalcompositionofexoplanetaryatmospheresisanareawhereourfieldwillcontinuetomakecontributionsandwelookforwardtotheamazingadvancesthatwillberevealedinupcomingmeetings.TheprogrammeexplicitlyincludedanumberofinvitedtalksonfuturefacilitiesincludingtheJWST(StefanieMilam,NASAGoddard)andALMABand1(OscarMorata,Taipei).PierreCox(JAO)presentedsomerecenthighlightsofALMAscience,includingthedetectionofKClandNaClfromcryogenicvolcanicejectiononIo,toobservationsofmultipleoutflowsinOrionandtomapsofthespiralstructureinthepre-planetarynebula,LLPegasi.TheconferencefinishedwithextensiveandpassionatedebatefollowingEwenCampbell’s(Basel)talkinwhichhearguedthattheC60+ionwasresponsibleforfiveofthediffuseinterstellarbandswithacolumndensityindiffusecloudssimilartothatofCH+,anidentificationthatwasrejectedbyJacekKrelowski(Torun)whoarguedthatatmosphericcontaminationhadnotbeeneffectivelyremovedfromtheastronomicalspectraandthatnon-LTEstellarlineswerealsoblendedwithC60+features.Theassembledparticipantsweredismissedwithanexhortationto‘makeAstrochemistrygreat’.

(iv)ListofRecipientsofIAUTravelGrantsThefollowingtablegivesdetailsofthe34recipientsofIAUtravelgrants,14femalesand20males,some19nationalitiesbasedin16countries.Wereceived52applications(23female)forsupportwhichwerecirculatedtotheentireSOCforcommentsandrankingasHigh,Medium,LoworNone.SevenmembersoftheSOCrespondedand,astherewasquiteascatteramongsttheresponsesonHighandMediumweagreed,forthepurposesofthisexercise,totreatHighandMediumequally.TheresultantallocationsagreedbythethreeseniorofficersofCommissionH2,TomMillarasPresident,TedBerginasVice-PresidentandMariaCunninghamasSecretary.Weagreedgroundrulesfortheallocationofindividualsums,asoutlinedinane-mailtotheAGSon2January2017.Intotal,weofferedsupportto45applicants(21female)totalling€19,840.Asisusual,anumberofindividualsturneddownawards,mostcommonlybecausetheycouldnotfindadditionalsupport;insomeofthesecases,suchadditionalsupportwasdependentontheindividualmakinganoralpresentationwhichwewerenotabletoguarantee.Re-allocationofmonieswasagreedateachstagewiththeAGS.Intheend,theSOCallocated€14,400eurosto34individuals,withsumsrangingfrom€300to€680.Wenotedtwopoints:(i)thatoffersofupto€1000werenotenoughtoallowseveralindividualsfromIndiatoaccept.Wefeltthatitwouldbeunfairtootherapplicantsifweweretogobeyondanallocationof5%ofthetotalfundstoanyoneindividual;(ii)wewouldhavelikedtoasksomeearlycareerresearcherstopresentinvitedtalks.Much

(v)ExecutiveSummary(1-2pagesforIAUwebsite)AstrochemistryVII–ThroughtheCosmosfromGalaxiestoPlanetswasthelatestinaseriesofIAUSymposia,heldevery6orsoyears,onthetopicofastrochemistry,asubjectthathasbecomemuchmorecentraltomodernastronomysincethefirstIAUSymposiumofitskindheldinGoain1985.SincethelastIAUSymposiumonthetopic,heldin2011,thereleaseofexcitingnewresultsfromfacilitiessuchasHerschel,ALMA,NOEMA,SOFIAandRosettahavechallengedourunderstandingofthephysicalandchemicalprocessesatworkinobjectssuchascomets,diffuseclouds,high-andlow-massstarformingregionsandcircumstellarenvelopes.ThepromiseofnewobservatoriessuchastheJWST,theSKAandtheE-ELTmadethisanopportunetimetoreviewthefieldandtoplanforthefuture.TheSymposiumwassponsoredbyDivisionsH,BandFandCommissionsH2,B5andF3.Inthiscontext,andgiventhehugeamountofdataavailablefromALMA,itseemedappropriatetoholdAstrochemistryVIIinChile,inthebeautifullakesideresortofPuertoVaras.TheconferencevenuewastheHotelCumbreswhichprovidedahighlevelofserviceforboththescientificdiscussionsandthesocialaspectsofthemeeting.Thescientificdiscussionsweredividedbetweenninemajorthematicareas:

1) astrochemistryathighredshifts,2) astrochemistryinextremeregions,3) interstellardust,4) molecularclouds,5) protoplanetarydisks,6) exoplanetsandsolarsystemobjects7) observingfacilities,8) laboratoryastrophysics,and9) hottopics.

Toaiddiscussion,theSOCidentified6Keynoteand15Invitedspeakers,(13malesand8females).TheScientificOrganisingCommittee(SOC)reviewedandscoredallsubmittedabstractsandselectedafurther36oralcontributions,takingintoaccountscientificimpact,gender,geographicaldistributionandstageofcareer.Keynoteswereallocated40mins,invitedreviews30minsandoralcontributions20mins,includingdiscussiontime.116posterpresentationswerealsoaccepted.Intotal,169individuals,111malesand58females,from25countriesattendedwiththeUSA(37)andChile(22)registeringthehighestnumbersofparticipants.IndividualsessionswerechairedbymembersoftheSOCandotherseniorattendeeswhilstavarietyofPDRAsandPhDstudentssupportedthelogisticsthroughoutthesessions.The116postersweredividedintotwosessionsonTuesdayandThursday,lasting90and100minsrespectively,andasmallgroupawardedprizesto6individuals,threefromeachsession.ThewinnerswereKo-JuChuang(Leiden),AnnaMiotello(Leiden),VictorRivilla(Arcetri),RichardTeague(Munich),MarievandeSande(Leuven)andMerelvan’tHoff(Leiden).
