As of the end of November,2015, nearly 800 Companies, including many Chinese-led firms, were engaged in the jade mining industry on 22,500 acres of land around Hpakant, according to the government. A 200-foot pile of dirt and other material from mining activities that collapsed in Hpakant, Kachin state, engulfed huts in an encampment of itinerant jade scavengers and their families, killing more than 100 people. Hpakant produces some of the highest-quality jade in the world, much of which is exported and smuggled to neighboring China where demand for the precious stone is high. The country’s U.S. $31 billion jade industry continues to be secretly controlled by networks of military elites, drug lords and crony companies linked to the country’s former military leaders, according to a report issued in October by the London-based environmental advocacy group Global Witness.

Chinese jade miners in overdrive ahead of new Myanmar government. Using heavy earth-

excavators and explosives, miners have been tearing into Myanmar's northern hills in recent months, in a rush to excavate more jade from the world's richest deposits of the gemstone before a new government takes office next year.

• The Area was hit by a massive landslide on November 21, 2015, leaving more than 100 people missing. Many of those killed were people who made their living scavenging on or near the waste dumps left by large-scale industrial mining firms.

• A new landslide hit jade mining region in Hpakant, Myanmar on December 25, 2015, leaving, according to witnesses, as many as 50 people missing.

• Advocacy group Global Witness said the value of jade produced in 2014 alone was $31bn (£21bn), the equivalent of nearly half of Myanmar's GDP, yet hardly any of the money was reaching ordinary people or state coffers, BBC said.

According to Myanmar's Ministry of Mines, about 800 jade mining firms operate around Hpakant, but activity is dominated by about ten firms, mostly Chinese-led ventures.

Much of the jade mined in Hpakant is believed to be smuggled to neighbouring China, Reuters writes, "where the green stone is highly prized and is widely believed to bring wealth and longevity."http://www.kdng.org/mining/jade.html

“Industrial-scale mining by big companies controlled by

military families and companies, cronies and drug lords has made Hpakanta dystopian wasteland where locals are literally having the ground cut from under their feet,” said Mike Davis of Global Witness, calling for

companies to be held accountable for accidents.

Death toll soars after disaster hits people scavenging through a mountain of waste rubble in search of Myanmar’s most valuable stone

"Income derived from natural resources should be managed properly and appropriately shared between the central and

regional governments."
