Report of Findings Drinking Water Lead Testing University Enterprises, Inc. Testing Entity: California Laboratory Services 3249 Fitzgerald Road Rancho Cordova, CA 95742 May 4, 2017 1.1 Background
In January of 2017, lead levels were measured at some drinking water outlets at Sacramento State by a group of students and professors, as part of a experiential research project. When the results were made available, Sacramento State decided to immediately remove from service, those 85 fountains, bottle-filling stations, and sinks that had water sample results at, or above, 5 parts of lead per billion parts of water (ppb). Some of those removed from service were located in buildings owned and operated by University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI). Because of Sacramento State and UEI’s concern about the health and safety of the campus population, it was decided to develop a program to test the campus water following guidelines from the regulatory agencies.
1.2 Purpose In January 2017, UEI contracted with California Laboratory Services (CLS) an independent third party consultant to test the lead content in drinking water and food preparation sources. The goal was to collect representative samples of the drinking water the UEI building occupants are routinely consuming at the beginning of the day after the water has sat undisturbed in the pipes and fixtures overnight. As Sacramento State did, the sampling and analysis was performed using guidance from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California State Water Control Resources Board.
Note: Only those buildings and operations of UEI were included in this sampling project.
2. Findings A total of 107 drinking water, food preparation and beverage dispenser outlets were tested in 8 buildings. Most of the 107 outlets had results that were less than the 15 ppb Action Level. However, 7 (6.5%) of the tested outlets were at, or above, the Action Level. All seven are located in office buildings and are not food operation related. One of the seven has been remediated and was tested by CIH. Table 1 is an overall summary of the test results. Table 2 is a summary of results by building tested and Table 3 is a summary of the results for the outlets with exceedances of the Action Level. The laboratory reports and chain-of-custody are provided in Appendix C.
