Style Report

Is it possible to be in love with a furniture
market? Yes!
I truly have a sweet spot for High
Point Market. It’s a special place, unlike
any other. Charming hospitality, a long
heritage in America-made furniture,
the exciting lure of new products, and the opportunity to
reconnect with dear friends in the industry make it a high
point for me and my design team.
The Spring ‘17 event was as tantalizing as ever. We came
away with beautiful selections for many of our projects, new
design inspirations, and forward thinking business ideas.
Now, the 2017 Style Spotters – four design team duos whose
talent is off the charts – bring you their special finds in our
Summer / Fall 2017 Style Report.
Until autumn, enjoy the best of summer. I look forward to
seeing you in High Point!

We spotted a slew of white hot pieces and were
digging the calm and cool vibe, big time. White adds
an inherent simplicity to any space it graces, and
having the option of including it in any number of
interesting textural materials, like gesso, resin, and
plaster to a name a few, makes us happy as clams.
Metals in general were highly prevalent at Spring
Market – from bright and shiny brass to rose gold,
and everything in between. We always enjoy a classic,
well-patinaed brass finish, especially when it’s paired
with other metals and materials to make the space
feel lived in and not so matchy-matchy. Mixing metals
is something we highly encourage, in order to avoid
too much of a good thing. Adding any of these
stunning pieces would be divine.

Art is oftentimes left as the last part of the puzzle.
However, these items make art anything but an
afterthought. Furniture that had function but doubled as
art popped up in quite a few showrooms in, dare we say,
the most creative ways.

ISHKA DESIGNSThe movement toward celebrating makers and artisans is
definitely on the rise, and we are here for it. Major standouts
this year showcase beautiful craftsmanship, intricate detailing,
and impressive functionality with a refinement that exudes
simplicity. Nothing was too overdone, as fine woodworking
details celebrated the amazing qualities of wood and materials
in their purest form, as well as the mixing of materials to
create interesting objects, and the intricacies of inlaid
craftsmanship.

The unexpected can make a room come to life. As such, irregular
shapes, interesting angles and just plain old outside the box thinking
were the highlights for us at Spring Market. Not only were we caught
up in all the unexpected angles on the most typical of furnishings
but we couldn’t get enough of the organic forms, either. Sofas on
angles and light fixtures on angles juxtaposed against furnishings and
accessories that looked like they were plucked right out of nature
make for quite the interesting composition in any room.

Picture a tissue box with an ever so slight tint of pink. It was good enough
for our grandmothers – it is even better for this generation! This super soft
light pink hue caught our eyes this Market more than ever – on furniture
finishes, fabrics, lamps and lampshades, artwork, and wallpaper. A refreshing
color with a young vibe, our favorite applications were the lacquered painted
finishes. Really good, soft tissue pinks are hard to find on furniture finishes
but almost all case goods showrooms had an excellent version. It seems to
be a classic look that is trending now and will stand the test of time.

Everywhere we looked at Market there was white! As most people know,
we are known for our color. Well, we loved the white this spring, and it kept
catching our eyes as we toured showrooms. We have never seen white so
sexy! All shades of white in all types of finishes including chalky, lacquer, and
natural. We saw it in metals, stones, and most every medium you can imagine.
It was really different this Market yet still showed that a neutral white can
go with anything and everything! It always fits seamlessly into any design
scheme or workup – any period or style.

As we shopped Spring Market we found clean classic lines are still a big trend!
We were inspired by the classic forms with clean lines that were popping up in
every showroom we visited. We tend to be traditional and loved these looks.
It is so nice to see fresh, pared down versions of heavy traditional designs.
Instead of heavy carving we saw linear lines in furnishings, lamps, chandeliers,
and even tabletop accessories. We feel like these clean lines might be here
for the long run. They tend to be more classic and elegant, and can work in
traditional, modern, and transitional interiors.
CLEAN LINES

Among our favorites were the classical inspirations from the deco era, found in the
shagreen cabinet from Michelle Workman’s Facet collection at French Heritage, and
the lovely Salon bench from Ambella Home.
Unique Regency and classically carved European lines were found at Jonathan Charles.
The urn finials on this spindle Morris bed by William Yeoward are fantastic. We would
pair this with the simplicity of the crisp, white comfortable Willow sofa by Suzanne
Kasler for Hickory Chair.
Mixing textures together, such as velvet and shagreen, always brings a luxe feel to a
space. We were blown away by Stanley Furniture’s nod to 70’s California cool, the
Panavista collection. The lacquered, faux goatskin Sundial tables with brass inlay are a
chic staple.
We are always on the hunt for good wallcoverings like this French country landscape
by French Market, one of many painterly European scenes. The new D'Este Console
with marble inset, by David Phoenix for Hickory Chair, would go perfectly with the
architectural fluted column detailing of the paper.
