On Monday, 23rd
April 2018, the principal, Mr. Ioannis Solaris, welcomed the teachers and
students from Romania, Poland and Estonia. All participants went to the school library where,
after the necessary introductions, a video was presented with images and important
information of the countries, cities and schools of the four partners involved in the project.
Moreover, the flyers/brochures created in the previous meeting in Romania were also
presented. Afterwards, the guests visited the school (classrooms, labs) and talked to students
and teachers. The tour ended at the Anti-Violence Room, which really impressed the visitors.
Then a number of ice-breaking activities/games took place outside the Anti-Violence Room so
that the students could get to know each other and build a sense of motivation, trust and
cooperation. Moreover, representatives of the press and the City Hall were informed about the
programme, talked to the guests and took pictures of them. The residents of Kalamata, thus,
got informed about the DOVES project via printed newspapers, online newspapers and TV
programmes. Then we returned to the library were a presentation was made regarding the
theme of ‘Music and Violence’. The aim was to present songs that dealt with the issue of
bullying and show teachers and students how music can help fight such problems. Then the
Romanian team presented the results of the anti-violence questionnaire for students and the
Greek team presented the results of the anti-violence questionnaire for teachers. Afterwards,
lunch took place at school with traditional Greek dishes prepared by the Greek parents who
hosted the students. Lunch was accompanied by traditional Greek music and dancing. The
visitors also brought their local food and desserts. Finally, the day ended with a Welcome
Music Concert performed by the Greek students.
On Tuesday, 24th
April 2018, students and teachers met at the school library. A presentation
and workshop took place regarding the issue of school mediation. Specifically, the
presentation focused on the history of school mediation abroad and in Greece. Moreover, the
key points of the process of peer mediation were further explained. Afterwards, students and
teachers went on a tour around Kalamata to learn about its history and culture. Specifically,
students and teachers visited ‘The Victoria G. Karelias collection of Greek Traditional
Costumes Museum’, ‘The Archaeological Museum’ and other Local Monuments. The day
ended with lunch in the Old Town.
On Wednesday, 25th
April 2018, students and teachers went on a day trip to Ancient Olympia
(the place where all types of violence and war stopped for the Olympic Games to take place;
an opportunity to get to know the Olympic Spirit). Before visiting the archaeological site,
students and teachers had the opportunity to watch the play “Pluto” by Aristophanes in an
open-air ancient theatre so as to get in touch with the spirit and culture of Ancient Greece and
Ancient Olympia. Then a guided tour of the archaeological site and the museum took place.
Among other things, students and teachers had the opportunity to admire the statue of Hermes
by Praxiteles, Phidias’ workshop, the site where the Olympic Flame is lit prior to the Olympic
Games and to run in the stadium. Afterwards we had lunch in Ancient Olympia. On the way
back we stopped at the dam of the river Alpheus and at Lake Caiaphas. In the evening teachers
enjoyed a night of traditional Greek food and music at a restaurant overlooking Kalamata.
On Thursday, 26th
April 2018, students and teachers met at the school library. Various
presentations and workshops took place on the following issues: violence in school and the
community, accepting differentiation, being an active listener, expectation/self-
knowledge/evaluation games, and ways to prevent violence. What really impressed our guests
was the presentation entitled ‘Peer Mediation: How to implement it’ by Mrs. Persa Kotsonouri
and her students. Mrs. Kotsonouri is a teacher at the 2nd Junior High School of Kalamata. She
has been implementing a peer mediation programme at her school for five years with success.
Their experiences proved insightful. Afterwards, the first part of our Music workshop took
place. The students worked on the creation of an anti-violence song in five languages (Greek,
Polish, Romanian, Russian, English). Before lunch all participants watched a play (at school)
presenting issues of violence that occurred in Asia Minor in 1922 when Greek residents of
Asia Minor had to leave their country and become immigrants in Greece because of the war
that ravaged their country.
On Friday, 27th
April 2018, students and teachers met at the school library for the last day of
the programme. Students made PowerPoint Presentations with photos and materials from the
Course for Mediators (Examples of best practice of the school mediators). The Mediators' best
activities will be published in the Antiviolence Guide. Then the questionnaire used to select
the peer- mediators was presented by the Estonian team. Afterwards, a short questionnaire for
the evaluation of the second meeting activities was administered to students and teachers and
the objectives of the next meeting were established. Finally, the second part of our Music
workshop took place and the anti-violence song was recorded. The programme ended with a
farewell lunch.
Apart from the aforementioned programme which took place at the school, host families
offered their guests the opportunity to learn about the city and its surroundings by visiting
museums and other local sights in the afternoons.
