Note: The Scranton school District rounds all GPA’s to four (4) decimal Places.
*Report Card & **Transcript Terms: *Marking Period: Marking Period is defined by one(1) Quarter or approximately 45 days of school.
*Current MP: Calculated using grades from current Marking Period (MP) only. The Honor Roll is based on MP grades and GPA.
*YTD MP: Based on all current year MP’s for the current year.
For example, for 2nd Marking period, MP1 & MP2 calculates the YTD MP.
*Cumulative: The Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by taking Total Quality Points of all courses
taken, including the Final Exam, and dividing by Attempted Credits. (See last page for calculations)
*Honor Roll Determined by a student attaining a 89.5000 GPA or greater for the Current Marking Period. Marking
period Honor Roll appears on the report card adjacent to the Current MP. Displayed as
***MARKING PERIOD HONOR ROLL***
*Weighting Honors Courses reflect a 5% weight and Advanced Placement (AP) Courses reflect an 8% weight. For
example; a MP grade of 94 in an Honors Course using a 5% weight is displayed as a 99. The grade is
actually a 98.7 using the weight. It is displayed on the report card as a 99 due to the grade being rounded.
Conversely, a 94 in an Advanced Placement (AP) Course is reported as a 102 (101.52 actual) on the report
card for the Marking Period.
*Unweighted No extra points (weights) are added. A 94 is a 94.
*MP Grades(Mark) Mark on report card used to calculate Total Quality Points.
*EXAM Test given to students at the end of the school year as a summative exam. This exam
is equal to 1/9th of the FINAL grade in a course. Exam Grade is displayed on the report cards after MP4.
*FINAL Listed on your Report card & your transcript. FINAL is calculated by adding Marking Periods 1, 2, 3, & 4
weighted or unweighted grades, then multiplying by 2. The final EXAM grade is added to this subtotal,
which is then divided by nine. Final Grade is displayed on the report cards and student transcript after MP4.
*Honor Society The National Honor Society is determined by a student attaining a Cumulative GPA of 92.000 or greater
after MP3 of the students senior year.
**Credits Credits earned by attaining a passing grade in a course. Credit are determined by board policy and listed in
course catalog. The credits are displayed on the student transcript. This is used as the denominator when
calculating GPA. (See calculations on last page)
**CUM YTD: The Cumulative Weighted GPA is calculated by taking Total Quality Points of all courses taken,
Weighted GPA including the Final Exam, and dividing by Attempted Credits. Honors (5%) and AP (8%) course weights
are used in this calculation. This includes every grade in a students’ academic career.
**CUM YTD The Cumulative Unweighted GPA is calculated by taking Total Quality Points of all courses
Unweighted GPA: taken, including the Final Exam, and dividing by Attempted Credits. NO course weights are used in this
calculation. This includes every grade in a students’ academic career.
**RANK: Calculated using the CUMULATIVE YTD Weighted GPA.
Rank is used to determine the Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
Quality Points: Calculated by multiplying the Level (weight) by the Mark.
Total Quality Points: Calculated by multiplying the Level (weight) by the Mark and then by the attempted credits. The sum of
each course’s Total Quality Points for a Marking Period is used as the numerator when calculating GPA.
(See calculations on last page)
Note: The Scranton school District rounds all GPA’s to four (4) decimal Places.
Class of 2019 will display the true CUM YTD WEIGHTED
GPA on transcripts. This will be a different GPA than the
Report Card Cumulative Average for class of 2019 ONLY.
For the graduating classes of 2020 and beyond, the
Cumulative on Report Cards and the CUM YTD
WEIGHTED GPA on Transcripts will be identical.

Parents in the Scranton School District can easily calculate their child’s grades by requesting a GPA

grade
student after 2 Quarters.

Mark – Grade that was given by the teacher.
Quality Points – Level multiplied by the Mark equals quality points for a MP.
Attempted Credit – The partial credit earned for a course (full credit divided by 4).
