To ensure the work was completed to schedule, Damen Shiprepair & Conversion formed a joint project team with the vessels’ owner to oversee the entire project, from safety to logistics. Strategic location The yard was chosen for its comprehensive facilities and strategic location. “We mainly chose to go to DSDu for this extensive refit programme because of its large drydock, which was very suitable given the amount of paintwork involved in this project and the tight schedule,” said Nigel Cureton DFDS A/S Fleet Group Manager Channel. “Because this shipyard is closest to the cross-channel routes, this gave us flexibility in case any delays were encountered. However, there were no delays and all the vessels have been delivered on time and to schedule.” Paint Along with typical dry docking work, DSDu overhauled the propulsion, stern and bow thrusters, rudders and engines. In addition, the vessels were repainted with the company’s new livery, a task that involved 11,000 sq m of paint per ferry. The ‘Dunkerque Seaways’ bow doors were rehung and the Kongsberg Power Management and Control System was upgraded with the latest hardware and software. Competition “The project benefited a dedicated team in place. This provided continuity and enabled us to improve processes to get the project handled as efficiently as possible,” said Bob Derks, Managing Director, DSDU.
