Daniel Goodwill, the new Art History teacher, is a graduate of LSUS with a degree in art. He attended the Renzi Center when he was young. “It’s been very interesting being back on my old stomping grounds. The Renzi was the only after school care program I ever enjoyed. I wasn’t surprised to find that its magic is still very much alive. My idea for the art history course at Renzi has been to include a bit of history and a little Q and A within the class. Some things they already know and are jumping to answer and some things they have never heard of before. Topics have included self-portraits, negative/positive space, color theory, and water color painting.” - Mr. Daniel Goodwill Renzi GOES TO Starbucks Renzi Education and Art Center The Renzi Reader The Renzi Reader The Renzi Reader The Renzi Reader Teachers Have Fun At Renzi Too! During Mrs. Rixney’s Homework class on Thursday, Dr. Greg Butcher brought in a human brain and eyeball for the students to see. The instructor showed the class the different sections of the brain and explained what each one does. Devin described touching the brain as being cold and spongy at first, but the harder you pressed, the firmer the brain became. Reagan remembers the brain smelling like rubber. Frannie was surprised that the eyeball was actually bigger than the portion we see on each other’s faces. She says it was roughly 1 inch in diameter. All students concur, though, that it was a somewhat gross experience.

On April 22, Dan Fisher and Rick Morrow from the Shreveport Volunteer Fire Department visited the Renzi PEP! class to teach the students about dogs that work. Brinkly, a 5 year old Blood Hound. She uses her nose to locate the lost individuals. She lets her trainer, Rick, know she has found the person by sitting still near the person. Scout, a 1 year old black Flat-Coat Retriever, on the other hand, has been taught to find people after disasters (tornadoes, floods, etc.). When he locates a person, she barks very loudly so that Rick knows where to look. Both dogs are rewarded with treats. Scout also enjoys her favorite toy, a squeaky duck.

Number 1 rule when trying to pet a big dog: * Always ask the owner first. * Let the dog say “hi” to you by letting it sniff your hand.

* Never walk up to a dog and try to pet it’s head; that is a good way to get

bitten since the dog doesn’t know you.

The educational group S.C.A.R.I. (Shreveport Community of Amphibians, Reptiles & Invertebrates) were special guests in the PEP! class on April 29. They brought with them an Albino Snow Gecko named Shiver, a Leopard Gecko named Saber, a 2 year old Savannah Monitor lizard named Abu who enjoys eating cat food, a Frilled Dragon lizard called Boris, and a couple of small turtles. S.C.A.R.I. carries their little friends to schools and educational programs in Shreveport and Bossier to teach about proper care of these types of creatures. Their meetings are held at the Red River Wildlife Refuge in Bossier City. Visit them online at: www.s-c-a-r-i.com.
