description

Rent Minds® Creative Juice is a culture anthology and art journal of thoughts, thinking and creativity from an African perspective without the influence of the west. It is a journal and platform that publishes and supports work by graphic designers, copywriters, writers, illustrators, photographers, graffiti artists, fine artists, poets, musicians, designers and visual artists We ask contributors to break boundaries and move beyond the ordinary redefining what is and what is not. It is about expressing views, exposing thoughts and penning writings that challenge the norms of what can and can’t be published. We really do publish what we like, in each of our serving leaving no single drop of our juice. Rent Minds® Creative Juice is raw, palatable, passion juice.

For the past 4our years, we have collaborated with so many talented and curious people. 4our years ago that's when the idea was sparked and Rent Minds® was born…where different skills of different creative and artistic talent are combined in developing work on a freelance/project basis: Paying and Non Paying Projects.

It has not been an easy journey but the process itself has been fulfilling. We have learned a lot. Grown creatively. Made bucket loads of mistakes. Paid for them. Lost relationships. Now we are evolving and redefining who we are. That's what we are doing with this publication.

Priest kissing a nun, a black

white infant suckling a black woman's

breast, the exposed pulsing hearts of

three different races shown during

surgery. The united colours of

Benetton's memorable infusion of

shocking images exposed the world's

differences. Shocking as they were

they hid a striking cord on South

Africa's reality back then. If you notice

these differences embrace them if you

hate them close your eyes.

Racial monogamy drove South Africa

into the dark where only white people

survived. The monogamous release of

potential held the country hostage to

opportunities away.

Too many selfish white people and

too many poor depressed black

people. It's only a couple of years after

1994 the white supremacy its gone

and years into democracy people still

ask if so and so stepping into

parliament is a black or white South

African, when the question to beat the

weakest link should be if the individual

is proudly South African or an agent

for change.

Politics are run by white and black

headed political parties, homes are

filled by families with siblings of

different races, black person with a

white surname and love finds itself

White led political parties are

addressing problems in black

communities', problems that the black

headed ruling party ignore. Soon I will

pay tax, join other tax payers in making

sure that everyone in government is

well fed, drives a car and that the car

has fuel and all their expenses are

settled.

Black people are scared to take the

chance on white people and white

people still believe they could run

things. One more vote and things

could get worse or better.

Today the battle might not be anything

racial but it has something to do with

the indispensible corruption of power

and its selfish sinister crimes. If a child

asks: will we go back to apartheid? No

we won't but we will go back to the way

we were, full of blame.

That is why some people still see

electricity as a luxury afforded only to

the rich. Some teenagers go into

adolescence raped; they come out get

sold for marriage by parents

overwhelmed by poverty. In the

Eastern Cape it's normal to do so.

Where are the prevention pills to stop

this production then selling of

daughters? The clinic is far away.

previously black women were nothing

today they are faces of big French,

American beauty houses and

superfast controversial athletes

The grass is truly greener on the other

side.

If anyone still asks if we have made

any progress probably does not live in

South Africa. Though there are people

who still live in the jar even if the lid is

open. The question after this is not if

there are enough white people in

Africa to drive it to development or if

zim hypothetically speaking has

enough whites or too many blacks to

even collaborate; the question is if

there are enough Africans to delegate

change.

With regrets, broken dreams, broken heart, fond memoriesOr do I just walk on by

With a hope and believe that tomorrow will become a better day

Lessons is what I have leant And mistakes is what I made

I still believe and hope for better daysWhat den happens to those plans and promises we made?

You were mine to have And I was yours to take

Tears on my chinPondering on what ifs and what not

What do I do, when I don't know what to do?Time spent

WHAT DO I DO

. I write what I write

Not because I like to write

But it is a mere habit

As chickens run around a bit

When their heads are off.

I'm simple and corrupt too

But the man in me speaks

Through the power of pen

To wise men in authority

People endowed with some power

I rely not on gut reaction

But eye has seen, ear has heard

That absolute power corrupts.

As absolutely as it is absolute,

If not equally shared it hurts.

I hate no politician, meek or mean

I loathe no richman, unjust or just

I was called and came

To put in writing the actions

That so ruthlessly tore the world

Your distinct understanding I demand

Genuine poetry is a house most roomy,

Decide on it after thorough inspection.

You'll be on the verge of idiocy

When you are hasty to blame, sir.

No pointed reference is intended

I espouse no political causes.

If at all you suspect yourself

Then the poet is pointing at you.

Proper recipients conclude faster.

Should a boy blame waterfowl,

When he's found throwing stones,

Simply because they put out their legs

When their heads are underwater,

Which happens as natural as a blink?

I will speak till the cows came home

The truth is as a savoury bake meat

If you take offense I'm not sorry

For you had your choice and opinion

So you choose to take offense.

UNTITLED

I love and admire my mistress

Though she may be very deformed,

Ill-favoured, wrinkled and pimpled,

Pale, red, yellow, tanned or black,

Thin, lean, chitty face, cloudy face,

Crooked, dry, bald, goggle eyed,

Blear eyed or with staring eyes.

I admire my good mistress

Though she looks like a squished cat.

Heavy, dull, yellow about her eyes,

Squint eyed, sparrow mouthed; yes

Have a sharp fox nose, a red nose,

Great nose, Chinese nose so far,

Rotten teeth, black uneven teeth.

I still admire my good mistress

Though she be beetle browed,

Her breath sticks all over the room

Her nose drop winter and summer

Bearded as a witch and sharp chinned,

With a long crane's neck, filthy nails.

I will admire my good mistress

Though she's got a crooked back,

A tanned skin, she stoops, is lame,

Spleen footed, gouty legs, oh a cartoon, her ankles

Lang over her shoes,

Her feet stink, she breed lice,

I love and admire my mistress,

Though she be an oaf imperfect,

Her whole complexion savours,

A harsh voice, incondite gesture,

Vile Gail, a vast virago or ugly tit,

A slug, a truss, a long lean raw bone,

A skeletap, a sneaker as a goblin.

I love and love my good lover

Though she appears as a slut, a dowdy,

A scold, a nasty, rummy, filthy,

Dishonest, obscene, base, beggarly,

Rude, cruel, foolish, untaught, peevish,

Irus' daughter, Thersites' sister's look-a-like,

Grobian's scholar with a detestable mind.

Even though to your judgement sir,

My love looks like a mard in latern,

Whom you could not fancy for the world,

And would have spit in her face,

And blow your nose in her bossom,

You hate and laoth with all your might,

I love and admire her for all this!

Masquerading as one unfortunate

Habitual traveller – Miss Lus Wickedheart

With lengthy appalling lips

So planned were her errands

Having mastered the art of enticing

Lowly men of country quality

With vain talk of self promotion

Clinging to her back always

Was a colourful little racksack

Whose contents no one knew

So common a hiker on the highway,

Somebody misinterpreted the truth

To the mid-twenties maid

That bus crew men are right fibre.

Two brags she had in life

The first is knowing conductors names

And her kids born outside wedlock

A certain toughness she possessed

One indelible in those of her trade

Even though nothing good was forthcoming

The joy of the rides makes the difference

Uninterested in her own children

She was keenly interested in drivers

Scary men with filthy moustaches

Who, if we may credit rumour

Were carriers of the notorious lice.

That clings and sucks blood

Rendering one physically well spent

Were it not for the lure of diesel

She would not have gone six feet

So I affirm stoutly this day

Nature detests lifestyles of infidels

Deepest depression to the loved ones

Such species as wicked heart

Conclude o death here is thy sting!

The Fatal truth is visibleComradely speeches please That food, girls and whisky

Are in unquestionable abundanceOnly for a day's occasion

Will not stop you from reasoningWhy not the many other days.

Deceive the comrades who deceive Whose minds impervious to sense.

For their wisdom is folly Their trophy a bleeding economy

In dire straits as you all seeThus every strand of your head

Must rise up against them

The comrades elongated their yearsBelieving themselves as demi gods

And the people to be senileBut you are an erudite massYour daily hardships I know

Are an added impetus to cause? The impeding change to be real.

The worlds now in the moodOf expectancy and confidence

That you well known victimsWill stop respecting your executioner

Who sees nothing discordant? With the five digit inflation

Stinging and grave health delivery.

INSIDEA RENTED MIND

Questions by Dineo MakotanyaneAnswered by Morrel Shilenge

hen I launched Rent Minds , it was just an initiative project through which I could learn, collaborate, grow and work with friends, as well as people whose work I Wadmired. Since then it has grown through the incorporation of ideas and thoughts

from different people. Initially it didn't start with an immediate consensus. It just kept evolving in different shapes and forms.

With Rent Minds® , we learn by doing and taking risks; at times ending in not getting paid for our work. With it I've personally learned that talent is not enough without practice, focus, perseverance, character and initiative. You can be so talented yet so useless. I refer to Rent Minds as IT, because I view IT as a growing organism that keeps changing forms and shapes.

Rent Minds® is always evolving and redefining itself. Now we are: A Platform for self-initiated and commissioned work, creative independence and growth.

BACKGROUND

Blog: http:// morrelhasideas.blogspot.com

How did it all start?

Describe your career path?

I studied media studies at Boston Media House, specialized in

strategic advertising….I did various subjects such as

journalism, public relations, marketing, radio production, film

and television production, creative advertising, brand

management, multimedia, copywriting, art direction,

computer studies etc.

I've worked with companies like Capricorn FM,

conceptualizing, writing and producing radio adverts, station

and competition promos, managing their website, social

media like facebook, twitter and taking photography of their

events. Before that I worked at a branding and design

agency….Prior to that a multimedia company. Earlier I

interned in various companies from a newspaper to a

marketing communications agency. By doing that it helped

me decide the direction that I wanted to take.

I wanted to be behind the scenes creating. I stumbled across

media and I had an aha moment. I felt it could give me a start

to what I wanted to do...it gave me a broad perspective and

background to various media related things. The rest i learned

by doing. Yes, there are other things such as

illustration…drawing…that are natural talent that I was born

with and developed when I was young. When i do work I try

and combine natural talent and skills that I learned. My whole

focus is on ideas instead of platforms. I'm idea centric hence I

can move from one platform to another. Once I understand

the principles' of how a platform works…I can be able to

create through it. I describe myself as a conceptual creative

who loves ideas.

short stories, if you want to be a

graphic designer….start drawing.

Keep it in a file. This will form part of

your entry requirements at varsity.

The journey to recovery is a self-initiated project/campaign of all the things and work that I have done and still do. It's a project where I go back to where I started.

THESPIRIT

What I say is this: let the spirit direct your lives and you will not satisfy the desiresof the human nature. What is opposed to what the spirit wants is opposed to what our human nature wants.

These two are enemies, and this means that you cannot do what you want to do. If the spirit leads you, then you are not subject to the law. What human nature does is quite plain. It shows itself in immoral, filthy and indecent action, in worship of idols and witchcraft. People become enemies and they fight, they become jealous, angry and ambitious.

They separate into parties and groups, they are envious, they get drunk, they have orgies and do other things as such. I warn you now as I have before, those who do these things will not possess the kingdom of God.

HUMAN NATURE

THESPIRITAND

But the spirit produces love. joy, peace, pa t i e nce , k i ndness , goodness , faithfulness, humanity and self control. There is no law against such things as these and those who belong to Christ Jesus have put to death their human nature with all its passions and must not be jealous of one another.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you, (be honest anyway). What you spend years building, people may destroy it overnight, (build it anyway). If you find happiness, people may be jealous, (be happy anyway). The good you do today someone will often forget, (do good anyway).

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your Creator, it was never between you and them.
