The Seacoast School of Technology’sculinary arts room was magicallytransformed into Victorian England

last Friday as parents and pre-schoolers partic-ipated in the annual Beatrix Potter Tea Party.

The party is puton for students ofWright StartPreschool by SST’sEarly ChildhoodEducation depart-ment as the culmi-nating event of amonth-long studyof the Peter Rabbitstories and the sto-ries’ author, BeatrixPotter. The roomwas ornately deco-rated with a wide assortment of Peter Rabbitand Beatrix Potter paraphernalia. Each tablewas complete with a place mat bearing thechild’s name. A decorative porcelain eggserved as a centerpiece for each child to takehome. During the week prior to the event thechildren had taken a field trip to “To Your ArtsContent,” an Exeter shop specializing in paintyour own pottery, where the children paintedtheir own teacups and saucers.

SST Assistant Principal Margaret Callahansaid the children have also been learning aboutetiquette and had been practicing in prepara-

tion for the big day. Children and parents weredressed to the nines as they snacked on a vari-ety of cookies and drank chamomile tea.

Among them were Bob Moreau and histhree-year-old daughter Alexis.

“She’s been looking forward to this for acouple of days,” said Bob. “She was all excited

that she was going tobe a grown up anddrink tea.”

After tea the chil-dren gatheredaround in a circle tohear the story ofPeter Rabbit, as readby Early ChildhoodEducation studentsMeghan Donahueand Elise Nardone.

The real hysteriabegan when Peter

Rabbit showed up to meet with the children.Several hugs ensued as children brought Petercarrots.

The event, now in its 11th year, is the cre-ation of preschool teacher Stacey Jordan. Shesaid she had held the event at a previousschool, but never to the extent of its currentmake-up.

“We decided to just make it bigger and real-ly include the life of Beatrix Potter,” said Jor-dan. “All of her stories tell a great little moral.Most children when they are young are givensomething involving Beatrix Potter.”
