RENT-A-BUBBE

INTRO  TO  INTERFACE  DESIGN    FINAL  PROJECT  PROF.  M.  SIMUN

 •••  ALY  MIFA  SOLOT  •••

I am a notoriously terrible patient; I become a useless, cranky, baby when I’m sick. I moved to New York City when I was 19 years old—essentially still a “baby”—and now, years later, I am not any less of a child when I am sick than I was then. When I am under the weather or even just depressed, I revert to my infantile desire to be coddled, babied, and catered to the way my Jewish “Bubbe” would. ! !“Are you hungry?” she would say, !“Not really,” I would reply. !“Great, I’ll make you some soup; some Penicillin! It will make you feel better!” would barely come out of her mouth before she was already chopping ingredients for her famous Matzo Ball Soup.! !The problem is, Mommom Goldie doesn't live close enough to be at my door at a moment’s notice. RENT-A-BUBBE was born because I literally wanted to rent a grandmother while I was sick. I needed the service it would provide, and couldn’t find that service elsewhere. !

WHAT IT IS AND WHERE IT CAME FROM

DESIGN BRIEF

Aims !To allow users to be coddled, doted on, validated, and loved when they need it most. RENT-A-BUBBE will allow users to “rent” a Jewish Grandmother-like figure. Through a series of questions answered on the website, users will be paired with a Bubbe based on their preferences, needs, and schedule. Bubbes will come to your home or office and take care of you like only a grandmother could.! !Success Metrics!Success of RENT-A-BUBBE will be measured by the amount of happy customers who feel better after a visit from a Bubbe. Feedback and reviews of the service will be pivotal, and users will be encouraged to tell what they enjoyed about their experience. Users create profiles and fill out additional questions to better match them to a Bubbe, which will lead to repeat business.! !Goals/Objectives!To help someone who is “less than” feel “more than”! !RENT-A-BUBBE will be personal, comforting, calming, soothing, personal, and safe. The goal is to better a difficult experience for users and make their lives easier when they aren’t well.! !Problem/Background Info! When you’re home from work or school, you often want someone to take care of you. There is no need for real medical attention, but sometimes you just want to have someone help you out.! !-85% of people say they would rather have someone take care of them when they’re sick or injured !-17% of people say they would rather be left alone or have a combination of being left alone/having someone take care of them when they are sick or injured! !And at some point, most people crave the type of attention they might receive from their parent, grandparent, or caregiver. The problem is that we are often not in the same location as our families, or they are unable to provide the kind of support they gave us when we were younger. Whether you grew up with a Jewish Bubbe, Italian Nonna, Greek Ya-Ya, or without a grandmother at all, it doesn’t matter.! !Principles/Values!-Simple but personal!-Easy on the eyes-Excellent Customer Service!-Over-the-top niceness and accommodating “can do” attitude!-Customizable / Personal!-Comforting!-Safe!

The RENT-A-BUBBE concept caters to a niche market, and within that market, a niche need. Though it will not serve an innumerable bunch, it will excel in serving the niche market it intends. ! !Bubbes are hired based on their outgoing and nurturing nature, and extensive interviews and background checks take place before they can begin their Bubbe training. Each Bubbe undergoes extensive training and learning prior to being certified and able to be used on the website. There are no specific “Bubbe” skills they are required to have before their training begins. Varying social, economic, ethnic, etc. backgrounds are strongly encouraged. A wide variety of Bubbes are hired so there are matches for any type of user. ! !During their training they are briefed and drilled on what to do in case of an emergency (either with their client, or with themselves). They travel with an iPad that they will learn how to use in their training. The iPad has the files of the clients they are visiting, as well as activities (movies, games, apps, etc.) to do with their client. They are also equipped with GPS, Maps, and directions to help navigate their jobs. ! !The Bubbes are paid fair hourly fees that fluctuate based on the tasks they are required to complete while on a job. The Bubbes fill out extensive questionnaires so they can be matched with the right kind of clients and both parties can have an enjoyable experience.! !Message!-Everyone needs to be taken care of sometimes!-There’s enough love to go around to everyone! !Competitors!TASK RABBIT!Live smarter by outsourcing errands and tasks!-Visuals/website is appealing!-Cute-but-not-too-cute graphics!-Reassuring vibe!-Excellent customer service! !-Website can get confusing ! !ZAARLY!Discover and hire the most amazing local service providers!-Option to login with Facebook profile!-Easy to use!-Good for its intended purpose: “to discover and hire the most amazing local service providers” !

CRAIG’S LIST!Local classifieds and forums – community moderated and largely free!-Website is easy to navigate!-Bare bones visual aesthetic! !-Nothing personalized when you log in, you must create all personalized content for yourself!-No customer service!-No insurance / you don’t know exactly what you’re going to get ! !SKYFER!Connects users within close vicinity to exchange information, request services, and take offers in real time! !SNAPGOODS!Safe and easy way to connect people to rent or borrow gear within their network or neighborhood! !DONE.!Helping busy people get things done! !Brand!Tone: cheerful, reassuring, “can do” attitude!Style: simple, easy-to-use, retro influence, cute without being too cutesy or dotty!Mood: calm; blues and greens and muted colors! !Because the service is so personalized, so should the messaging.! !Audience/Users!New Yorkers; Men and Women; 18-45 !Target: Women Ages 20-35! !RENT-A-BUBBE’s target users are busy, working professionals who need the special touch only a Grandmother-like figure can provide; primarily when they are sick or depressed, but also when they just need that type of companionship.! !They are not necessarily wealthy, but have enough money to be able to hire someone to take care of them, or they are the children of parents with enough money to hire a service such as RENT-A-BUBBE. They live in the five boroughs of New York, with the largest concentrations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. ! !

Constraints! It is difficult to navigate a website when you are ill. The design needs to be simple to use, easy to understand, but still visually appealing. It shouldn't be so simple that it doesn’t feel personal.! !Even though you’ve read all about the privacy and confidentiality agreements, you've read user reviews, you’ve seen praise from major publications about how great the service is, you still are inviting a stranger into your home. ! !Users should feel confident and calm and should have the tools in place to rectify the situation if they feel anything less. Meeting someone for the first time when you are sick is uncomfortable enough, inviting someone into your home when you are sick is even worse; especially when you don’t know them. The attention to detail, design of the website rental platform, and over-the-top Customer Service are all factors that will make the experience less awkward, more rewarding, and will ultimately garner repeat business. To that end, an over-the-top sense of kindness, with a “can do” attitude that’s not annoying, fake, or disingenuous in RENT-A-BUBBE’s Customer Service is imperative. ! !RENT-A-BUBBE will take extreme measures to ensure each customer will feel happy, comfortable, and secure, with as little headache (no pun intended) as possible.! !The other (obvious) challenge will be in ensuring the safety of not only the users, but also the Bubbes going into the homes. Safety is of utmost importance, not just in terms of crime, but also in terms of health. Should something go wrong while a Bubbe is on a visit, they will be equipped with cell phones to dial 911 at any time. They will also carry an iPad, which allows them to access any of the information you have provided, but at bare minimum, your allergies, health issues, and emergency contact information.!!!!!

SCENARIOS

USER SCENARIO 1: MABEL # !Mabel went skiing with her family last week and took a terrible tumble during a snowboard lesson; leaving her with a broken foot, broken arm, four broken fingers, and multiple sprains, bumps, and bruises. After flying back with her mother and following up with her regular doctor, she was told she needed to take a week off to rest and recover. Her mother spent the rest of the weekend with her, but then had to fly back to Florida. Mabel is bored, uncomfortable, and feels helpless. Her friends have stopped by to check on her, but they have classes and other obligations. It is difficult to do normal things around the apartment, and she’s getting antsy. ! !She’s on her bed with her leg propped up in front of her and calls her mother, crying, wishing she had been able to stay. Her mother reminds her of a service they had heard about from the mother of one of Mabel’s friends and suggests she look into it. Mabel, feeling hopeful, logs on to the easy-to-understand, simple yet informative, inviting, website: RentABubbe.com from her iPad’s Safari browser. She learns Rent-A-Bubbe is exactly what her mother described: a community of caring Jewish Grandmother (“Bubbe”) types that can be “rented” to coddle, cosset, pamper, relax, and entertain under-the-weather, injured, or down-in-the-dumps clientele who are craving the unconditional, loving attention only a sweet grandmother can provide. Because the Bubbes are real people, they are unique, worldly, well-read, and compassionate. They come from a plethora of backgrounds, but they have one thing in common: they love to love and dote on, especially to those in need.! !Thrilled at the idea of having someone like her own beloved Bubbe, she can’t wait to start booking. Since she isn’t sick, and has enough non-broken fingers to use her iPad, she is able to use the online booking system rather than the feature which has an agent call you directly. She starts with entering her zip code, and with each additional piece of information she enters, the website narrows down which Bubbes are available and match the criteria she is specifying. She is prompted to enter what day she wants to rent the Bubbe for, and from a calendar icon, she selects “today”. She decides she would like to book the Bubbe for two hours to start ASAP, and she presses enter.! !She is then directed to a page of questions and preferences so that RENT-A-BUBBE can match her with the perfect Bubbe from their database. She has the option to save this more detailed information to fill out later and just have the first available Bubbe sent to her, but she decides she would like her experience to be more customized, so she starts to answer some of the questions. When she clicks “MY AILMENT” a popup screen allows her to specify that she has broken bones, and she can customize her information by filling in a text box that says she was in an accident while taking a snowboarding lesson. As she fills in more information, a progress bar tells her how much she has completed and how far away she is from completing her RENT-A-BUBBE reservation. ! !She forgets to click “Save/Next” when she has finished entering her ailments, and a friendly error message clearly highlighting this missing information pops up so she can correct it. She inputs the missing information and clicks submit, this time it takes her to the next step successfully. She goes on to customize her profile, selecting that she would like someone “just to hang out” and that the task might involve “light cooking”. She continues through the site with ease, never confused or unsure about what she is supposed to do next. She continues to answer lifestyle questions to improve her Bubbe match and selects her favorite music, magazines, activities, and hobbies.!

After spending a few minutes answering questions about herself, she decides she has entered enough information and is ready to be matched. She inputs her personal information: her full address, telephone number, who to contact in case of an emergency. She has the option to save her information and create a password, which she does, so that she can come back and add or change information to her profile should she decide to use RENT-A-BUBBE again. ! !She agrees to the terms of use, and is instructed to fill out the last information required before her reservation is complete: her payment information. She receives a subtotal based on the services and time she has selected. When she has finished putting in her payment information and confirming the details of her reservation one last time, she clicks “RENT MY BUBBE NOW!” After a few short moments, the website loads to a confirmation page with the details of her reservation, including a confirmation number. Should she need to contact RENT-A-BUBBE Customer Care, she can use this number or a combination of security/account questions to access her reservation by phone. She hears a “ding” from her iPad and checks her inbox where she finds an automated email with the details of her reservation and her confirmation number.! !She looks at the clock and sees she has about two hours before her Bubbe is scheduled to arrive, so she decides to take a nap. Before she falls asleep, she calls her mom back and tells her that she went ahead and rented a Bubbe, that she is looking forward to having some company, and she is going to get some sleep before the Bubbe gets there. She lays down in her bed and sets an alarm for an hour and forty-five minutes so she will wake up fifteen minutes before her Bubbe is scheduled to arrive.! !Thirty minutes before her Bubbe arrives, RENT-A-BUBBE sends out an email reminding her of the reservation and indicating that everything is on schedule. She can go into her profile on the website and choose to receive these alerts via email, text message, or phone call. ! !Right on time, her RENT-A-BUBBE, Barb, shows up with flowers. Mabel feels completely at ease from the time she arrives. Barb fluffs her pillows, gets her fresh water, and prepares her a snack of apple slices and crackers. Barb helps her get situated on the couch comfortably, making sure her leg is propped up as her doctor instructed. They decide to watch I Love Lucy reruns on TV until it is time for Barb to leave. Barb hugs Mabel goodbye and Mabel thanks her repeatedly, in much better spirits than before. !!!

USER SCENARIO 2: BAXTER# !Baxter lives the typical lifestyle of a New York City bachelor working in finance. He parties hard, has a lot of money, and hasn’t ever had to take care of himself. He just returned from a business trip in India and has developed an upset stomach from something he ate or from drinking the water. The past two days he has been on medication and is on the mend, but is still quite nauseated. He was rushing when he left and has been bed-ridden since he has returned, so his apartment is in shambles—there are clothes everywhere, dirty dishes out, take out/delivery containers litter his kitchen.! !He emerges from his bedroom in the morning feeling tired, jetlagged, and groggy. He surveys his kitchen in disgust, opens the refrigerator and takes out the last bottle of Gatorade he had delivered. Feeling nauseous and annoyed, he flops down on the couch and turns the TV on to a recap of last night’s basketball game. He notes to himself that he can only stay home another day or two from work, and he has to do something to get this apartment in order. He could do it himself, but it would be so much easier to call his mom and have her drive in from Long Island and take care of him. He goes to dial her number, but then remembers her sister (his Aunt) is staying with her and decides against it. She won't be able to come without his aunt, and he is too drained to deal with her right now. ! !He decides the best option would be to use RENT-A-BUBBE and get a mother-like figure to come over and take care of him and help him get his apartment in order. He has used RENT-A-BUBBE a few times in the past—and as early as two weeks ago when he was decorating his apartment for a party. He loved Jean, the Bubbe who came to his house to help him then, and opens his computer to log into his RENT-A-BUBBE account. When he signs into the website, he is able to view his previous rentals, and can click on Jean’s name to find out when she is available. ! !Luckily, she has an opening that morning. His eyes are started to get heavy, so he decides it would be easiest to have a representative from RENT-A-BUBBE contact him to complete his booking. He clicks the button to have someone call him, and a status bar comes up telling him there is a two minute wait. He watches TV for less than a minute when the phone rings. He picks it up, and a courteous, friendly, English-speaking, Customer Service Agent named Callie asks how she can help. He gives her his phone number so she can locate his account, and when she has it loaded he tells her he would like to book Jean, the Bubbe he used a few weeks back. Callie quickly locates Jean on the list of Bubbes available for today and tells him that she is available to come to him beginning in an hour, and is available all afternoon. He says he thinks four hours should be sufficient, and explains that he would like for her to make him soup, help clean up his apartment, take out the trash, and call in a grocery delivery order. Callie puts his information into the system and confirms the details of the reservation with him before hanging up. ! !He goes back to watching sports and checks his personal email inbox. He finds an email from RENT-A-BUBBE with the details of his new reservation as well as a confirmation number. He checks his email, goes on Facebook, and continues drinking Gatorade. At 11AM his alarm goes off, alerting him to take his medication, which reminds him that Jean should be there within the next half hour. He takes his pill and sits back down on the couch and opens his calendar on his cell phone. He remembers he has a personal training session scheduled in the gym downstairs, and calls to cancel it. Shortly after he hangs up the phone, his doorman calls to let!

him know Jean is here to see him. He tells his doorman to send her up and that he will leave the door open.! !Moments later, spunky, upbeat, Jean opens his door with a smile. He is instantly happy to see her and stands up to give her a hug. She orders him to sit down and relax, and she comes over and gives him a hug. She sits next to him with her arm on his arm and he explains that he was on a business trip and got sick in India, but not to worry – he’s not contagious. She tells him how badly she feels for him, and insists on making him some chicken noodle soup – her great great grandmother’s recipe. Baxter lays back and watches TV while Jean enters his kitchen and starts to clean up. She throws out all the trash and empty food containers and takes them out to the trash chute in the hall. She comes back and begins chopping vegetables and preparing the ingredients for the soup as Baxter starts to drift to sleep.! !Jean lets him sleep while she cleans up around his apartment, stacking papers and throwing out expired items from his fridge. When an hour has passed, she gently wakes him from the couch and asks if he would like to go sit in bed while the soup is finishing. He declines, and says he is feeling better. They sit together on the couch and he dictates a grocery list to her to call in. He gives her his credit card and instructs her to call the grocery store downstairs, order the items, pay for them with his credit card, and have them delivered. He tells her to get whatever she wants for herself, and she giggles. ! !She takes down the list of items and recommends he buy more toilet paper, dishwashing detergent, and some fresh fruit. He tells her to order whatever he thinks she needs and she steps into the kitchen to use the phone and call the grocery store. After she is finished, they decide to put on The Discovery Channel. They watch together and carry on casual conversation. She goes and gets him a blanket from the closet because she thinks he looks chilly, and he thanks her and asks for his slippers as well. She gets them, as well as a pillow from his bed, and prepares him some tea.! !The phone rings from the doorman downstairs and Jean picks it up and tells him to send the groceries upstairs. Baxter has the TV on in the background, but is reading an article about a new car on the New York Times app on his iPad. Jean waits in the hallway for the groceries, and signs for them when they arrive. The grocery delivery person puts the bags of groceries in Baxter’s kitchen, and Jean thanks him.! !In the last hour they have together, Jean puts his groceries away and continues to monitor the soup. She continues to refill his water, and ask if he needs anything else. She strips his bed and puts his dirty linens in the hamper. She puts clean sheets on his bed and new toilet paper in his bathroom. She cuts up carrots and celery and puts them into Tupperware containers in his fridge so he will have snacks for later. She tastes the soup and exclaims at how delicious it is. She ladles the soup into a bowl for Baxter and puts it on a tray with some crackers, a napkin, and some Gatorade. She carries it into him on the couch and his face lights up. He blows on the hot broth and closes his eyes as he takes a bite of the most delicious chicken soup he has ever had. Jean beams with excitement – she is so glad he likes it. She can’t take credit for it, of course, it’s not her recipe. ! !He tells Jean not to tell his mother, but that this soup is better than any he has ever had. Jean pats him with excitement and asks if there is anything else he needs. He says no, and thanks her so much for helping him out. She returns to the kitchen and divides the  !

soup into smaller Tupperware containers – freezing half of the soup for another time, and putting the remainder in the fridge for later. She gathers her things and gives Baxter a hug before she leaves. He walks her out of his apartment and when she is gone, goes into his room to take a nap in his clean sheets. He feels much better knowing his apartment isn’t such a mess, that there is food in his fridge, and he has everything he needs.!!
