APPOINTMENTS & SCHEDULING

1. Appointments will be made by the individual tutors and entered on STUDENT APPOINTMENT calendar designated by campus for all to view

2. Appointments to be made according to availability of tutor and student need  - Coordinator will be available on PRN basis at each campus according to need/availability

3. Students will be encouraged to make appointments in advance by: (1) email (2) phone (3) in person (in this order)

 4. Scheduled appointments will be seen first, without interruption from walk-in

students (walk-ins will be politely asked to request an appt time via email) 5. However, Walk-ins can be invited to participate with other students in the

same course if scheduled student agrees

APPOINTMENTS & SCHEDULING

WALK-INS1. Students will be permitted to walk-in for tutoring if no student is scheduled at that time2. Walk-ins must not overlap a scheduled appointment and must be terminated when scheduled student arrives

CANCELLATIONS1. Students are encouraged when making appointments to notify of cancellation in a timely manner to allow other student access2. After 3 or more cancellations/no shows (at tutor discretion), student will be considered last if a scheduling conflict occurs

INTERRUPTIONS will be kept to a minimum while tutoring students -Signs will be posted asking students to refrain from entering NSRC

while others are being tutored- Cell phones are to be disabled during tutoring (turned off if student cannot refrain)

FORMS

Initial Assessment will be completed by all students (must include all demographic information; student must provide STUDENT ID #

Waiver (permission from student to access records) must be filled out, signed and dated by all students, once per semester

NSRC follow-up must be completed with each student visit (this is for record keeping of visits and to asst tutors in subject of last discussion)

Log Sheet entry on must be completed with every student visit

Index cards (card box at each campus) must have check-out date, name, phone # and return date for tracking of reference & video check-out

STUDY SKILLS RESOURCES

HANDOUTS- may be accessed through the BCTC Home page-Student Affairs>Study Skills Services>Helpful Handouts

POWER POINTS will be available to tutors for Study skills, Test-taking, Critical Thinking and Deciphering Questions (others may be available at a later date)

WORKSHOPS will be held by the coordinator/tutors in the beginning of each semester on Study skills, Test -taking, Critical Thinking, and Deciphering Questions.

-All students are invited to attend. -Beginning students will be highly encouraged by instructors

and some instructors will allow class time for these workshops

METHODS

ASSESSMENT OF STUDY SKILLS will be explored with the student during the initial visit.

-Student should be questioned on current study methods and suggestions made based on tutor’s observations

FOLLOW UP PLAN should be initiated on the assessment form

RETURN APPT should be encouraged and scheduled at first and subsequent visits to evaluate student progress

PERIODIC F/U should be maintained to insure student success (i.e. grade review (by coordinator), friendly reminder to visit NSRC, hallway demeanor)

METHODS

CORNELL NOTE TAKING will be introduced to all students and encouraged as a method of note organization -demonstration provided to students for suitable content (e.g. text notes, lecture notes)

TABLE FORMAT note organization will be introduced and demonstrated using Excel format and printed for student to copy for later use-demonstration provided to student for suitable content for this type of format (e.g. pharmacology, acid base, F&E, etc)

MAPPING should be introduced and demonstrated to student WORKSHOP S offered each semester for new students and individually

as needed

NURSING INTERVENTION

NITRATES Relax smooth muscle layer of blood vessels, increasing lumen of artery/arteriole, increases blood flow and O2 supply to surrounding tissue

1)Relieve pain of acute anginal attacks 2)prevent angina attacks 3)Treat chronic stable aangina pectoris 4)control periop HTN assc/w surgery

CNS HA (severe/persistant) dizziness, weakness, restlessness OTHER hypotension, flushing, rash TOLERANCE OCCURS w/topical and transdermal, remove at night or after 10-12hrs

Do Not Give with these Meds: ETOH, ASA, CCB, dihydroergotamine (migraine tx), heparin severe anemia, closed-angle glaucoma, postural HTN, early MI (SL form), head trauma, cerebra hemorrhage, constrictive pericardidis, allergy to adhesive (TD form)

BEFORE GIVING ASSESS: anginal pain,hx of allergy, physical assmt, auscultate lungs, VS, ECG, hx of orthostatic hypotn ONGOING ASSESS: frequency/severity of angina, report CP that does not respond to 3 doses of NTG q5minX3

Sublingual/buccal: dry mouth decr absorption , tablets should be kep ON person Metered spray: spray onto or under tongue, DO NOT inhale TOPICAL: 1" = 15mg of NTG, obtain VS b/f adm, remove old appl from skin and cleanse skin, apply new appl to chest, back, arm, leg, abd; rotate sites PT INSTRUCTION: call nurse/911 if CP not relieved after 3 doses

CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS blocks mvmt of Ca++ ions across cell membs of cardiac and arterial muscle cells(less Ca++available for transmission of nerve impulses)

TX of: 1) Anginal pain assc/w vasospastic angina 2) Chronic stable angina 3) Hypertension **verapamil used to tx conduction sys abnormalities and dysrhythmias

CNS: dizziness, lightheadedness, HA, nervousness, asthenia, fatigue GI: nausea, constipation, abd discomfort CV: peripheral edema, hypotension, arrhythmias, bradycardia **not usually serious, rarely d/c therapy

Hypersensitivity, Sick Sinus Syndrome (conduction abnmlty), 2nd/3rd degree AV block xcept w/pacemaker, hypotension w/syst < 90mmHg, ventricular dysfx, cardiogenic shock

TUTOR EXPECTATIONS

Advise Coordinator the day before if possible, if you are ill or otherwise unavailable (ice storms are not permitted this year )

If you need to make changes to your schedule based on your FT job, please do so when your FT schedule is available (I am flexible, just need to know)

Complete your time sheet a minimum of 2 days prior to the end of pay period and leave with a designated person to be sent to payroll (pay period dates will be provided)
