• Comes from Latin
• Rebirth or revival
• Renewed attention to the Classics
Monarchy
Italian City-States• 250 small states (most ruled by cities)
• Some were small
• Some were as large as 100,000 people
• Milan
• Venice
City-States
• Each were independent
• All formed when townspeople began to free themselves from the landlords.
What Made This Possible?
• Italy did not have a strong central government
• Republic- head of the government is not a monarchy.
Ruling -Class
• Florence- Made up of about 800 wealthy families
