Support details If your PC displays errors about the cloc k or CMOS when starting the PC, the CMOS battery on the motherboard probably n eeds to be replaced. Desktop PCs use a battery to keep time when the they ar e of f, much like a watch. Like a watch, th e battery needs to b e replaced when it ru ns low on power. Replace the battery using the steps below. WARNING: The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide s kin along any interior metal edge of the computer. CAUTION: This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarp eted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface. NOTE: Print this document for reference while working on the PC. Unplu g all cables excep t for the power. Write do wn each cable location if you do not already know where it connects. 1. Unplu g th e power cable and with the power cable removed press the  button on the front of the PC. NOTE: Your PC may look different than the images used in this document. The s teps and images used in this document can be applied to most PC case designs. If opening the case or accessing the battery is difficult, refer to the Upgrading and Servicing Guide for your PC. If available, Upgrading and Servicing Guides can be downloaded from the manuals section of your PC support page. 2. Remove the screws on the rear of the PC. 3. Slide the side panel off f rom the rear of the PC. 4. Locate the battery. It is a small shiny round metal wafer (like a larger version of a watch battery). 5. Remember which direction the battery is install ed. Usually the engraved side, the positive side, is face up. Re move the battery from the main board. Example 1 Example 2 6. Call a local computer supply store to see if a replacement is available. Use the inscriptions on

the battery to answer any questions that the computer supply store may ask.

Acquire the battery and replace it in the same socket it was removed f rom. Make sure the new

battery is installed in exactly the same orientation as the previous battery.

WARNING: There is danger of explosion if the battery is not correctly replaced!

Replace only with the same (or equivalent) type of battery.

Replace a side panel by matching the side panel tabs with the tab openings in the case.9.

Insert the side panel and slide it forward.10.

Fasten the screws to secure the s ide panel.11.

Connect all cables and turn on the PC to set the time.12.
