Remote Radio Head Test Challenges

Cellular base stations architectures continue to evolve towards employing remote radio heads (RRH) connected to the baseband unit via a Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) optical link. This architecture offers advantages in terms of optimizing base station hardware placement while minimizing RF cable losses. The test challenge lies in characterizing performance between the “front-haul” digital-baseband and the RF physical interfaces, on both the downlink and uplink. The front-haul physical interface traditionally relies on the development of custom hardware, requiring additional design and support resources.

Remote Radio Head Test, Reference Solution

The remote radio head test, reference solution provides the physical interfaces together with the vector signal analysis and vector signal generation you need to carry out comprehensive functional and performance testing of your RRH.

Characterize the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL), RF air-interface to and from the digital “front-haul”. Connect and control your RRH, using standard “in-service” RF and CPRI and DC power ports, and run pre-defined performance test based on 3GPP standards. Measurement expertise is embedded so you can progress rapidly to valid results without spending time developing custom test hardware and complex test methods.

This highly integrated, multi-RAT, multi-port test solution comes in a compact form factor. Optimized for speed, a single signal-capture provides multiple concurrent measurements, significantly reducing your test time. For ease of analysis the graphical user interface (GUI) displays multiple measurement windows simultaneously. You can compare results against pass/fail limits for simple go/no-go decisions. GUI interactions can be logged as a command-list, which you can use to create automation sequences.

The LTE signal creation and analysis software includes a package of LTE example waveforms for stimulus and pre-defined signal analyzer measurements for baseband and RF.
