PRE-PREP amp NURSERY NEWS
YEAR 2 - Miss Heaps has been very impressed by all the Year 2 children in her RWI group this week They have been learning all about condors and Marabou storks and concentrating on using different
sentence openers when comparing the similarities and differences between the two birds
Eva Unlike the Marabou stork the condor has white bits on its wings Although they are both large a marabou stork is taller (one and a half metres rather than one metre) Even though they both have bald heads a Marabou stork has a pink head and a condor
has a red head Also another difference is that Marabou lays its eggs in a nest but a condor doesnrsquot
Aadi Although a Marabou stork is bald like a condor a Marabou stork has a pink head and a condor has a dark red head Unlike the Marabou stork which eats rats
doves and birds a condor eats baby animals
Wesley Unlike the condor which lays their eggs on a cliff edge the Marabou stork does the same but in a nest Both birds are big but the Marabou stork is bigger (the Marabou is 150cms and the condor is
100cms)

U9B Netball v Handcross Park - Won 8-3
What a lovely crisp afternoon to play netball The girls were all excited to take on Handcross Park and played the first quarter
with determination The teams were evenly matched but the Handcross team had the edge and the score line was 3-1 time
for a team chatrsquo Suddenly everything changed the girls were brilliant superb passing by all of the girls and 3 fantastic shots
from Lila meaning half time score line was 4-3 The girls continued with this excellent play notably from Diya in defence and
Isabella in centre but all girls should be proud of their achievements
Final score line was 8-3 Well done girls and thank you for making my day Mrs Lee
U9 Netball v Handcross Park - Won 11-7
This week the U9A team took on Handcross Park in a fantastic game Emily Goodfellow was the captain and she won the toss
giving Copthorne the first centre pass The first half saw great play from both teams - moving the ball well down court
defending and attacking brilliantly The girls were fighting for every ball At half time it was 5-4 to Copthorne
The game continued to be close throughout but Copthorne kept fighting and moving into good spaces There were some great
passes into the shooters from Emily and good linking play from Callie Shriya and Belle when they were in the D All the
girls shooting was on form too Sophia and Jemima continued to be solid in defence while Emma and Abigail helped move
the ball up the court
The final score was 11-7 to Copthorne with Belle being the top goal scorer and voted player of the match by Handcross
The girls looked really good as a team this week and have begun to put practice into play which was great for me to see
Well done to all the girls HC
U10A Grass Hockey v Handcross Park - Won 17-0
Copthorne won the first centre pass and it was evident from the onset that they were determined to win There was some
excellent passing from the forwards and it was great to see the drills that they have been practising this week being put to
good work It was not long before Ella C had put in a cracking goal which was soon to be followed by her second There was
some good tackling from our players however our defence didnrsquot have as much opportunity to show their skills
By ten minutes in Copthorne had scored 5 goals therefore the team was moved around However all our girls were keen to
score and although we had defenders including our goalie playing on the wing the goals kept on coming Copthorne U10
really showed how they can play and it was good for their confidence to prove to themselves that they can score
After the match it was decided to have a little fun game with both teams mixed up It was great to see that our girls were
accommodating and generous to the opposition ndash in true Copthorne style
Well done girls you all played really well LD
Scorers Ella C (4) Ella D (4) Katie (2) Josie (3) Neve (1) Charlotte (3)
U11A Hockey v Handcross Park - Won 3-0
After playing on astro on Wednesday and Friday of last week we had to adjust to the lumpy bumpy grass pitch due to the
amount of rain we have had it was really hard going
As always we were slow to start making things difficult for ourselves by being so close to each other Yelena got the first goal
after a shot from Amber was saved and Yelena was there to tap it over the line Handcross had a few skilful players and because
they were used to their pitch it meant that Ami and Elise had a bit more defending to do than normal although the Handcross
girls only managed to get into our D just before the final whistle went
Madeleine got the second goal from some lovely strong passing from the Copthorne girls working it from the back right down to
the front Alice had a good game in the middle being strong on the ball and not letting the Handcross girls have it There were a
few miss tackles and stick tackles from the Copthorne girls as well as the Handcross girls but we didnrsquot let this bother us too
much Amber fired the ball into the back of the goal from a short corner which wasnrsquot going to be stopped by anyone Madison
didnrsquot have much to do in this game but kept herself entertained by singing whilst she was in the goal watching the play
Another win for the undefeated team Next week will be a tough one but a game that we are ready for
Thanks to the supporters again who come to watch every week makes a big difference to the girls to have someone shouting on
the side lines (not just me) Player of the match Amber LJ
U11B Hockey v Handcross Park - Lost 1-4
This was a really hard game to play because of all the rain we have had recently the grass pitch was uneven very heavy and the
ball wasnrsquot running smoothly at all
The Handcross girls were obviously used to the conditions and put a huge amount of pressure on our defence early on in this
game It wasnrsquot long before they scored after a goal mouth scramble and Maddie trying really hard to kick the ball out of the
mud
However the Copthorne girls fought back and we had a couple of missed chances from Hermione after some good work from
Katherine Radley in the centre of the pitch Clara worked hard throughout the game chasing down the ball and making some
nice through passes to Emilie
Holly and Emily had to work very hard in defence and made some good tackles but the Handcross forwards were just too strong
Well done Maddie on her first attempt in goal and a huge well done to Katherine Radley who was playing up a year and was
also nominated lsquoplayer of the matchrsquo by the Handcross girls MJ
3rd VI Indoor Hockey v Handcross Park - Lost 4-5
This week the 3rd VI indoor hockey found it tough to get going and to find passes
One could not fault their determination to win the ball but as soon as they collected it they passed without looking giving the
ball straight back to the opposition
Handcross make Copthorne pay for their lack of discipline and ball control by scoring three quick goals The girls managed
to hang in the first half and tried to create attacking opportunities and came close on few occasions
After half time Natalie did well and decided to take on the visiting side She impressed with some good elimination skills and
ball speed running passed one player after the other She got Copthorne back into the match with two goals From her there
was not much to slow her down every chance she got she headed for goal Sometimes it paid off and others it didnrsquot
Willow and Annie were there in defence to pick up the loose ball and gave it straight back to the forwards of Lily and Zillyan
to attack again
Just when Copthorne thought they were closing the gap Handcross managed to catch us unaware and put another two goals
in to keep their lead Copthorne did not give up they kept attacking and chasing the ball
Natalie once again stepped up a gear and found herself scoring another two goals to keep the girls hopes alive but it all came
a bit too late as the end whistle finally went with one goal in it
Well played girls good comeback Well done to Natalie for being voted player of the match HP
Team Alice Annabelle Willow Zillyan Natalie (4) and Lily
2nd VI Indoor Hockey v Handcross Park - Won 7-2
This week the girls 2nd VI indoor hockey rapped up their third win in a row with a 7-2 victory over Handcross Park
The girls played really well as a team and each and every one of them was committed in getting the ball off the opposition
and attacking on every opportunity Jemima was the most ruthless player in front of goal scoring 4 in the match She got the
goals flowing after receiving the ball off Charlotte then placing it well past the keeper Her second was from a well taken
free hit just outside the circle Hannah played the ball to Charlotte who passed it on to Jemima who then passed it into the
goal Awesome two passes to goal Charlotte soon turned from provider to goal scorer herself with a well taken short corner
She soon added her second as she dribbled straight down the middle of the court her team mates made her job easy by
pulling defenders out of the way to create a clear path to goal and she did not hesitate to strike right from the edge of the D
Handcross played some good hockey themselves and tested Alice on many occasions but she held her position well and
covered both posts to stop the visiting side from scoring They did manage to sneak one in before half time
The second half was almost the same as the first this time both teams had equal possession and territory the only difference
was Copthorne made all their opportunities count Again Jemima set the standard being goal hungry in the D scoring
another two goals Elly moved from defence into attack and like last week showed good composure on the ball and scored
for the 2nd week running Well done to Charlotte for being voted player of the match She ran and defended all over the court
and showed good dribbling skills up in attack HP
Team Alice Elly (1) Hannah Charlotte (2) Jemima (4) and Harriet
1st VI Indoor Hockey v Handcross Park - Lost 3-6
This week the girls found themselves up against a solid Handcross Park team Even with home court advantage the girls still
got off to a rusty start At the start both teams took time to settle and size one another up with passes going astray and loose
positioning creating big gaps It was the opposition that broke out of their shells first advancing ahead with determination
and aggression on the ball This sudden change of pace and intensity gave the visiting side the lead Although Copthorne
were mostly on the defence in the first half the girls did manage to pull some passes together and test Handcross Parks
goalkeeper Against the run of play Copthorne managed to pull into the lead with two goals both off Michaela She
converted a short corner and the second off a great pass from Chloe It didnrsquot take too long before the opposition levelled
from one of their short corners Going into half time with a 2-2 score the girls were quite happy and started off on a more
positive note in the second half by taking the lead from another short corner giving Michaela her hat trick
Handcross was not going to go away and soon stepped up another gear Two of their girls took it upon themselves to dribble
quite effectively through most of our players to then pass the ball to unmarked players in our D Copthorne had no answer
for this ball control and precision and started to lose their shape and more gaps started to appear
Goals started to flow freely for the visiting team giving them a convincing victory over Copthorne HP
Team Prisha Harriet Alys Michaela (3) Chloe Victoria and Liliana
2nd XI Football v St Christopherrsquos
So we have reached the end of the football season and it has certainly proved to be a difficult journey for the 2s in terms of
results The highs of the draw at Duke of Kent in September are now a distant memory The last game against St Christophers
was always going to be tricky However after a good training session with the 1s on Tuesday we went into the game
determined to show our mettle We battled away in the first half and at last began to make tackles and show much more
determination than in recent matches Yes we were under pressure but there was no making life easy for the opposition Despite
our best efforts we were 0-3 down at the break
One instruction at half time was to get stuck in and leave Elliott up front for the long ball should we get the chance The second
half started with more of the same and then we had a break on with the battling Robert feeding a through ball to Elliott who
promptly obliged with a sweet strike into the corner and the place erupted You would have thought that the boys had just won
the world cup as the smiles on their faces were at least a mile wide The cheerleaders were screaming and even the coach sported
a massive grin The delight that the goal brought caused the frustration of the previous weeks to evaporate and made all the hard
work worth while I have to say that all the effort put in by the boys appeared to be rewarded in that one goal and they were
well chuffed with themselves and quite rightly We did not go on to win the game as would have happened in some tv drama
but that didnt really matter today Well done boys you have come a long way in the last 9 weeks and I am delighted that you
finished on a high
Men of the match Toby William Jack Harry Joe Jamie Robert Edward Andre Nabil and Elliott
Final thanks to our loyal supporters who I think were just as pleased as the boys JC
1st Football v St Christopherrsquos
St Christopherrsquos were the opponents for the final football game of the season and for the Year 8 boys it was the last time
they would take to the field in Copthorne colours The first half was rather comfortable and all though we did not make
good use of possession we battled well and took the two chances on offer to go into half time will a 2 nil advantage Sam
finished well after some neat work down the right from Evan and Evan was once again provider for Alessandro to round the
keeper and score
Irsquom not sure what happened in the second half but we seemed to take our foot of the gas and coast along expecting the result
to come A loose ball on the corner of the box was not dealt with and an opportunist strike found its way into the far post for
2-1 Soon after the game was level when a flick on from a free kick was not attacked by a single defender leaving an
unmarked striker to nod home Although I am sure the game was exciting from the touchline it was exactly the opposite
from in the middle It is a shame to finish with a draw however in the grand scheme of things it has been a very successful
season with the return of the Sale Cup and also winning the Copthorne 6-a-side
Well done boys and good luck at your next school Year 7rsquos Irsquoll see you next season MA
Colts D Football v St Christopherrsquos
Today the Colts Drsquos travelled down to Hove to play St Christophers The boys had a great game which resulted in a win of 2-1
to Copthorne It was a bit of a slow start to the game with only scoring 1 and conceding 1 goal each but after half time the boys
started to play together as a team showing great defence and even better attack spending almost the entire second half in our
goalie box The first goal was scored by Gabriel Jones after a great pass from Elliott Martin-Drew into the middle of the box
where Gabriel finished it off by striking the ball into the back of the net Unfortunately St Christophers were able to get passed
our goalie Amardip Ahluwalia after he had saved all of their other attempts The second goal for Copthorne was scored by
Kieron Escott in the second half after there was an outstanding show of teamwork passing the ball through the entire opposition
and getting the ball through to Kieron who was in on goal and finished well BB
Colts C Football v St Christopherrsquos
Todayrsquos game against St Christophers down in Hove was very successful The Colts C team defeated St Christophers 2-1 with
an outstanding goal from Captain Jack Holliday The team worked very well to get the ball down into their own half and a great
cross ball from Zevon Rustom to Jack which ended up in the back of the net The second goal was scored by Zevon Rustom after
help from Zach Pennisi and Nick Kinnear to get passed the defenders The ball was going towards the goal after Zevonrsquos strike
when one of the St Christophers defenders unluckily assisted the ball into the net going over the goalies head
The boys worked very well together as a team and the result shows I feel as though our attack was very sharp but the defence
from Rick Ghosh Nico Lopalco and Jack Flanagan was what secured our match I was very proud of the boys today not only
with their football but also with their good sportsmanship and ability to work well together as a team BB Colts B Football v
Colts AampB Football v St Christopherrsquos
Colts A - St Christophers 3 Copthorne 0
Colts B - St Christophers 3 Copthorne 0
This was a disappointing end to what has been a successful season for the As and Bs We were away at Glebe Villas playing
on very small bobbly pitches against some pretty good opponents who were better than us on the day
The As played first and were perhaps complacent against a side that we had knocked out of the Lancing Prep 6 a side
tournament but St Christophers got their revenge today They outplayed us and only Daniel stood out for us at all with some
good driving runs down the right wing The closest we came to scoring was when Beau spun past a defender and fired a
fierce shot onto the angle of bar and post but otherwise this was a poor showing and our second defeat of the season where
we have been a lot better
The Bs also soon found themselves behind as St Christophers played nicely and worked harder to win possession and move off
the ball than we did Peter had the best chance of the day but fired wide and Adam also came close to scoring but it was not to
be Also only the second defeat of the season this has otherwise been a very successful term of football for both teams
Well done and good luck on the rugby pitch lads DJ
Colts E v St Christopherrsquos ndash Won 3-0
The Colts Es started the game with a completely new formation On the back of recent performances Arjun was promoted into
midfield and Harry was given an opportunity up front After a few hesitant opening exchanges the boys quickly found their feet
and began to play some good football Our midfield trio of Kinshuk Arjun and Kye started to string some passes together and
link up well with Harry With their confidence growing the boys began to launch wave after wave of attack on the opposing
goal However they were continually thwarted by some good goalkeeping and last ditch defending Eventually
St Christopherrsquos succumbed to the pressure when one of their players handled the ball on the goal line Aaryan took the
resulting penalty and thundered the ball into the back of the net At halftime we completely changed around our midfield line
up and added a more physical presence through Austin Ben and Tommy The boys harried and hustled in the middle of the
park and cranked up the pressure on St Christopherrsquos goal Inevitably more goals followed from Ben and Harry Although our
defence had a relatively quiet game when called into question William Joshua and Aaryan showed they were more than able for
the task Well done boys a cracking effort and a well deserved win DH
Colts F v St Christopherrsquos ndash Won 4-0
Buoyed from last weekrsquos win the boys began brightly from the whistle With the midfield strengthened by the new pairing of
Nathan and Kiran our boys quickly dominated both possession and territory It was not long before their efforts were rewarded
with goals from Kiran and Nathan who went on to notch up four goals between them Throughout the game our defence
remained rock solid with Raymond Lakith and Jasper forming an almost impenetrable defensive line Ayush Nicholas and
Jack also played well in their respective positions Overall it was a fine performance and a fitting end to the season DH
U9B Football v St Christopherrsquos
Coming off the back of two goalless matches the under 9Brsquos were looking to find the back of the net this week in their final
match for the football season against St Christopherrsquos Defence was still of key importance and keeping a clean sheet would give
us the best chance of victory The match was end to end with lots of chances for both sides however it was still 0-0 at half time
with Copthorne wasting numerous opportunities to shoot at goal The second half was a bit more open flowing and Copthorne
dominated possession having shot upon shot on the St Christopherrsquos goal but still with no success One ball was a certain goal
until the mud on the goal line stopped the ball dead and allowed the goalie to pick it up and clear Finally midway through the
second half we got the break through and went up 1-0 via some brilliant play from all the boys Now defending for our lives we
were clearing the ball as far away as possible from our goal With only a minute to go St Christopherrsquos made a break and finally
scored and Copthorne under 9Brsquos finally conceded a goal after three matches In the end the score was 1-1 leaving the results for
the season for the under 9Brsquos with 0W 3D 2L JB
U9A Football v St Christopherrsquos
The under 9Arsquos concluded their football season on Wednesday with a match against St Christopherrsquos played at Copthorne
Looking to finish the season on a high the boys were really excited However late in the first half they lacked concentration and
went down 2-0 in quick time This came as a blow to our confidence although with 3 key things to work on in the next 15mins to
get ourselves back into the match We toiled hard but St Christopherrsquos defence was too quick for our attackers and we didnrsquot
have the legs in the end to win threw ball and enough strength to hold off tackles In the end the second half performance was an
extreme improvement on the first however once again we could convert that into goals
In summary of the season well done to all the boys who played Arsquos football over the term and I hope that in the off season you
sign up for your local teams to continue to develop as footballers
Overall the under 9Arsquos finished the season with results of 3W 2D 5L JB
U8B Football v St Christopherrsquos
On Wednesday the U8 B team played their last match of the season in what proved to be a difficult encounter against
St Christophers
Having had a few rugby practices mixed in in the week leading up to the match the boys were a tad rusty however it didnt take
long for them to get into the swing of things
The boys played well throughout the match and were well up for all the challenges that came their way Both teams had their
fair share of attack however it was St Christophers who looked more likely to score We did in the end keep out all opposing
attacking opportunities and the game ended in a draw of 0-0
A good season of football for the boys There was lots of improvement from individuals as well as as the team
Good luck for the rugby season DH
U8A Football v St Christopherrsquos
The last match of the season saw a slightly disappointing end to what has been a very positive season Scoring early it looked as
though it was going to be a comfortable game ending in a last match win for us however it was not to be
St Christophers were very strong in the mid field and had two superb footballers who scored the majority of the goals with the
game ending in a 5-1 loss We did however take some good positives from this game It was a very good experience for the boys
to see the level at which some boys from other schools are playing at We had to keep our head up and still believe that we had a
chance after 2 or 3 goals had been scored and most importantly one cant win all the time Its these types of matches even at U8
level that shows the character of the boys and it was fantastic to see them not giving up
Well done on a good season boys Some fantastic football played some great wins and some hard losses but all in all good fun

The last match of the season saw a slightly disappointing end to what has been a very positive season Scoring early it looked as
though it was going to be a comfortable game ending in a last match win for us however it was not to be
St Christophers were very strong in the mid field and had two superb footballers who scored the majority of the goals with the
game ending in a 5-1 loss We did however take some good positives from this game It was a very good experience for the boys
to see the level at which some boys from other schools are playing at We had to keep our head up and still believe that we had a
chance after 2 or 3 goals had been scored and most importantly one cant win all the time Its these types of matches even at U8
level that shows the character of the boys and it was fantastic to see them not giving up
Well done on a good season boys Some fantastic football played some great wins and some hard losses but all in all good fun

determined to show our mettle We battled away in the first half and at last began to make tackles and show much more
determination than in recent matches Yes we were under pressure but there was no making life easy for the opposition Despite
our best efforts we were 0-3 down at the break

Goals started to flow freely for the visiting team giving them a convincing victory over Copthorne HP

were mostly on the defence in the first half the girls did manage to pull some passes together and test Handcross Parks
goalkeeper Against the run of play Copthorne managed to pull into the lead with two goals both off Michaela She
converted a short corner and the second off a great pass from Chloe It didnrsquot take too long before the opposition levelled
from one of their short corners Going into half time with a 2-2 score the girls were quite happy and started off on a more
positive note in the second half by taking the lead from another short corner giving Michaela her hat trick
