Presidents Report - November 2015Hi to all Club Members

Welcome to the BMMAA November Club Newsletter.

Well now that the Melbourne Cup has been run we are now very close to Christmas and the end of 2015. This year has gone too quickly and it seems the years are going faster every year.

The submission to get a new flying field is in the hands of the VMAA & MAAA and we are under the understanding to have an answer in the first couple of weeks in December. So far, it seems all is positive but we do have a way to go yet.

I would like to thank all the people that have helped get the submission together in a very short time and we still have a mountain of paperwork to go through. The Council is supportive and will assist us in completing our submission for our permits as this submission is as important as the VMAA/MAAA.

I took the mower out to the field early Friday the 23rd of October and spent the next 6.5 hours mowing the north/south, east/west, diagonal runway from fence line to fence line, the pit area & last the control line / Helicopter Hovering circle. Finished this off by filling the water tanks on the toilet reservoir for Sundays fun fly.

Sunday we had our Royal Flying Doctors Fund Raising Day and it was a great turn out, with lots of flying and a good old chit chat with Club Members and their families. It was good to see a couple of the Club Members fly their control line models like PVA and Les. Not bad for old guns.....

The day bought out all type of models from Helicopters, Gliders, control line models, Cubs, electric mustang, Scanners, Pulse’s, Ugly sticks. The day was enjoyable and from my point of view, everyone had a good time.

The donations for the RFDS has been left open until the next Club meeting for anyone that couldn’t make it out to the field and wanted to donate to the Royal Flying Doctors Fund Raiser could do so and be part of a great course.

On Sunday the 8th November 2015 Melton Model Aircraft Association (MMAA) ran its annual display day. With the late notification from MMAA by email after Joe F had sent 3 or 4 email, we sent out a very late notification to Club Members to see if they wanted to fly in the display.

was all about.

All in all, the BMMAA Members that flew gave a great display of good smooth controlled flying. In the morning Joe F, his Clip Wing Cub, myself with my Pulse with Les S with his Barn Stormier, flew together to provide a variety of different models and did so quite well.

In the afternoon Joe F with his Big ugly stick, Garry with his large ugly stick & myself with my little ugly stick and Mark Clark with another Large ugly stick, all flew together with a formation take off and flying. Joe F had a dead stick at the North end of the field when his muffler broke in two but landed safely. Time for some maintenance Joe... We did find all the parts sitting in the middle of the runway at the North end. Lucky..

The runway was excellent and well maintained. The long grass around the runway last time we were there was gone which made things easier for takeoff and landings. The breeze for most of the day was cross strip,

but nothing that could not be handled by our pilots. Well done.

The weather was great and I had a great time showing the visitors our fantastic sport. The President of MMAA, David Axom thanked us for our attendance and emphasised how important it was to have us there as part of the overall flying. No doubt he will invite us back for 2016.

And a quick reminded that all flying must be done forward of the centre line of the runway. No flying over your head or behind the flight line No exceptions. This is part of safety for you and others and we need to make sure these simply rules are followed.

Please keep up the good work of taking all your rubber home with you at the end of the day. It is pleasing to see the field clean and tidy.

Over and Out…..

Well the Martians were back at it again this year and place a team into this event. The trophy is a inter Club competitions across 12 events from various disciplines. It also provides an opportunity to have a taste of competition in a friendly and enjoyable environment. We did not have enough pilots for all 12 events which is ok to some degree as a pilot can enter two events. Some of our pilots pulled out for a number of reasons and that cannot be helped, but those that did attend had a great time and did the Club proud.

The trophy event is held over two days with the first events being Helicopter and Combat. Straight off the mark Kevin Curwood came first in the Heli timed event and Syd Histead coming equal first in Combat. Great start. We then progressed to the second Heli event (Novice task) in parallel of the Old Timer event with Les Spaltman the pilot. Again Kevin placed with a 2nd with Les doing his best in the Old Timer event but was not able to place a good score. That is alright as Les is working on another model for next year and knows what to do now. Good job by Kevin, Les and Syd for the Saturday events

We did not have pilot for the Fun Fly or Scale Aerobatics which was a pity as we have the pilots and skills to get some valuable points. We continued on the Sunday with Thermal and Electric Glider were Mark Peterson being the pilot, assisted by Annmarie Peterson. Mark had been very busy in the lead up to the event and preparing a new glider in between his busy work scheduled. Everything seemed promising but mother luck was not on Peter and Annmarie side this year. Broken bungee, collisions and weather played its part in keeping his score down. Oh well, there is next year and I know Mark and Annmarie will be back again.

Sunday continued but we had no one for the Sports Limbo event listed until Mark put his hand up. Mark had flown in two events already but was permitted to fly in a third event with the agreement of all team Captions. He was not the only one to fly 3 events based on shortages of team pilots. Mark had an electric model

for the Sports Limbo. Unfortunately, the wind was that strong, it did not have enough thrust to move off the ground. At the end, only two models actually completed the event and gain valuable points.Les tried his hand at Club Racing with Garry back in

the saddle with Musical Landings. Both did a great job as both ended up with a third place. Well done guys. The last event for the day was Fun Scale were yours truly took part and used his Clipped Wing Cub. The conditions were not good with the wind being all over the place and gusty. The Cub flew great and held its

own with little issues with the conditions. Only one round was flown and I managed to finish second. So a few more points was added to the Martians score.

At the end of the day, BMMAA come 4th by 0.5 of a point (NFG 30.5 points with BMMAA 30 points). Not bad for a small Club that is keen and determine to do well. But that is what the VMAA Trophy is all about, to take

part and give it a go. I hope next year we can get a full team as I reckon we could be in the top three.

Well done to all Club Members that took part and those that came out to support the Club. It would have been great if a few more Members would come out to cheer the Club on as all the stirring and shenanigans in the

back ground is part of the fund.

I hope 2016 VMAA Trophy will see a few more pilots with a full team in toe…..

We needed judges on the day to help out........ now is a motly brew. Les, Garry and Mark help out.

Kevin Curwood did a great job with his Heli in both events. Well done.

Mark and Annemarie Peterson give glider a go. Did not have good luck, but stuck at it and took part. Good job.

Mark tried to compete in the Sports Limbo event, but the his electric did not have enough power to overcome the strong wind. Next year.

Club racing. Another popular event...

The MAAA sent out a message about holding an event between 24 or 25 Oct in support of the Royal Flying Doctors Service. (RDFS). No doubt a worthy course for the fantastic work they do. Australia is big as it is beautiful and I have had the pleasure of going around most of it. Some parts

are so isolated, it is hard to imagine people actually live in the great outback. But they do and they are proud Australians and form part of our culture as the ‘sunburnt country’.

The MAAA were going to send out badges in recognition of holding an event and donating $5 dollars from each Club Member in

attendance. Well, as per usual, the Martians acknowledge the call and on Saturday, 24 Oct BMMAA held a fun fly in support of the RFDS.

As our President has alluded to in his report, it was a great day with weather to suit. At one stage I believe there was 14 Club Members at the field with a

few visitors thrown in. It really was a good day with plenty of flying and solving the problems of the world. Everyone donated with some giving a little bit more. Even the Control Line Cycle was being used. Piper (Les’s daughter) of about 9 years old I think, was flying control line as well. It was good to see and

a lot of fun had.

The BBQ, even though simple, was hit as it normally is with some even having breakfast at t h e field as well as some started early to enjoy most

of the day at the field. The early mornings are fantastic with very calm weather and once you wake up (about the third flight) it feels good. Can be cold though

as Michael Whelan knows cutting grass at 6:30 am at the field has hairs on it, but well done for doing it and spending 6.5 hrs cutting. Long time in the saddle.

Unfortunately, the badges we were expecting to give to each Club Member did not come through as all had been given out as we

were a bit slow in ordering ours. No issue, the event was still a success and the donation collected will be given to the RFDS on behalf of BMMAA. Donations are still being taken right up to our next Club meeting. So if you can spare $5 or if you want to give a little bit more, will help keep the flying doctors airborne and get them out where it is needed in our big country.

Well done Martians. May the force be with you all and……….. See you at the field.. ED
