A MONUMENT FOR OAKLANDAND THE WORLD
Remember em: Champions for Humanity, a world-classmonument and a unique bronze sculpture dedicated todiversity, was unveiled in September 2011 at the new HenryJ. Kaiser Memorial Park in the Uptown District of Oakland.
e first three sections of this inspirational and educationalmonument, created by local artist Mario Chiodo, honor 14of 25 humanitarians. Funding continues for the unveiling ofthe fourth section, which will make the project the largestbronze monument in the western United States – dedicatedto diversity.
On the following pages, please review these humanitarians,each of whom overcame personal struggles in their lives toachieve greatness. We at the Oakland Metropolitan Chamberof Commerce, who embraced this project, dedicate this 2012calendar to Mario and to the humanitarians who have meantso much to us – and to freedom.

RUBY BRIDGES1954-present
In November 1960, six-year-old ruby bridgesbecame the first African American child todesegregate an elementary school. Although sheonly lived a few blocks from the William Frantzelementary School in New Orleans, Louisiana,marshals had to escort her because of angrysegregationist mobs that had gathered. For anentire year, she was the only student in her classbecause white parents pulled their children fromthe school in protest.

Mother teresa was a Catholic nun ofAlbanian ethnicity and Indian citizenshipwho founded the Missionaries of Charityin Calcutta, India in 1950. For more than45 years she ministered to the poor, sick,orphaned and dying, while guiding theorganization's expansion, first throughoutIndia and then in other countries. Followingher death she was beatified by Pope JohnPaul II and given the title blessed teresaof Calcutta.

CHIEF JOSEPH1840-1904
Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians wasknown to his people as “under travelingto the Loier Mountain Heights.” In thelate 1800s he challenged the plan of the U.S.government to move his tribe from theirnative lands when the Cavalry reneged ontheir agreement to let them stay.
Not wishing to see more fighting andbloodshed, he negotiated anothersettlement, saving lives, maintaining hisdignity and proving to have more integritythan the victorious soldiers.

OSKAR SCHINDLER1908-1974
Oskar Schindler was an ethnic Germanindustrialist who is credited with savingalmost 1,200 Jews during the Holocaustby employing them in his enamelware andammunitions factories, which were locatedin what is now Poland and the Czechrepublic respectively.
Mr. Schindler appeared to have a life ofluxury, but gave up everything he ownedto secretly fight the genocide preached byHitler. Whenever Jews were threatenedwith deportation, he claimed exemptionsfor them.

Frederick Douglass was an American socialreformer, orator, writer and statesman. Aerescaping from slavery, he became a leader ofthe abolitionist movement, gaining note forhis oratory and anti-slavery writing. Hestood as a living counter-example to slave-holders’ arguments that slaves did not havethe intellectual capacity to function asindependent citizens.
Douglass served as an adviser to PresidentAbraham Lincoln during the Civil War.

An advocate of nonviolence as a means tosocial change, Dr. Abernathy helpedorganize the Montgomery bus boycott andlater led the Poor People’s Campaign onWashington, D.C.

Coretta Scott King, best known as the wifeof Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., establisheda distinguished career in activism in herown right. Working side-by-side with herhusband throughout the 1950s and 1960s,Mrs. King took part in the Montgomerybus boycott of 1955 and worked to pass the1964 Civil rights Act.
Following her husband’s assassination in1968, she continued their work, foundingthe Martin Luther King, Jr. Center forNonviolent Social Change in Atlanta.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a vitalfigure of the modern era. His lectures anddialogues stirred the concern and sparkedthe conscience of a generation. e
movements and marches he led broughtsignificant changes in the fabric ofAmerican life through his courage andselfless devotion, giving direction to 13years of civil rights activities.
In 1964, Dr. King became the youngestperson to receive the Nobel Peace Prizefor his work to end racial segregation andracial discrimination through civil disobe-dience and other nonviolent means.
