A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT TO PONDER Leaves come in a variety of shapes. Even if you don’t recognize which trees they’re from, you wouldn’t mistake an oak leaf for a pine needle, or a weeping willow leaf for a maple. There are even differences among leaves in different types of the same tree. Yet despite all their differences, all leaves have the same purpose: to make food for the tree, using water, light, and certain dioxides. Without all three of these things, the tree will not grow or even live.
A church is like a tree, and its members are like leaves. Without their constant donations of time, talent, and treasure, the church will soon suffer and may not survive. However, with careful stewardship, the church will flourish. And a healthy church, like a healthy tree, will benefit others. It can be a source of food, shelter, and inspiration, too. Remember this as you decide how you can provide your time, talent and resources to make the tree flourish. - Anonymous.

DEC 2015/JAN 2016 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 3
“When Our Christmas Cheer is Running Low” (Read John 1:1-14) As some of you know, my good friend (Jim), my best man at my wedding, died in October. A couple of weeks ago, Kathy and I took out to dinner Maria- Jim’s companion for the past eight years. I could tell that she was not looking forward to the holidays. She even asked for some books to read to help her cope with the upcoming holidays. Maria, like many people who will mourn the death of a loved one for the first time this holiday season, do not feel much cheer at Christmas. Christmas is harder on us than we usually want to admit. We worry whether we have bought the
right present. We throw our hands up, thinking we will never have it all done. If someone we can’t do without has died, the empty chair at the table is harder to bear this time of year. If money is tight—as I’m sure it will be for those employees of Quad Graphics in East Greenville and Kraft-Hines in Fogelsville after the announcement of each plant’s closing—the faces of those employees’ children droop even lower when their parents tell them they can’t get them what they want for Christmas. This time of year is not easy for everyone. It is not always full of cheer. Even if we are not that sad, Christmas can be difficult. We grind our teeth if someone tosses us a “Merry Christmas” while our world crumbles apart. Even if we are not wrapped in grief or staring at a pile of unpaid bills, we may have the sinking feeling that Christmas won’t last. As soon as it is over, life goes back to
normal. We might wonder why Christmas does not bring any lasting change. John would not know about the frantic craziness we have twisted Christmas into. He would know about the loneliness and the empty feeling that we get when we can’t muster up enough cheer. He would know the grief of wishing we could share just one more holiday with the person we have lost. John would know about the people who drink too much at the office Christmas party. John would call that “darkness.” We are often attracted to the birth stories in the other gospels, like Luke, but John has much to teach us. John may not charm us with kicking babies in a manger or shepherds dropping their jaws at the angel’s word, but John teaches us some things we need to know about the birth of our Savior. We would have a hard time making a children’s play out of John’s Christmas words, but John gives us hope. John is realistic about the darkness, but also realistic about the light God shines in the midst of that darkness. For John, darkness is the sin and pain of the world. Darkness is our lack of faith, such as Nicodemus coming to Jesus at night. Darkness is the agony of grief as Mary and Martha mourn the death of their brother. Darkness is all around us, seeping into every part of God’s creation. In Jesus, God shines the light into the darkness of creation. Because of that light, we never have to give up in despair. No matter how hard life seems, we still have hope. Even if the darkness seems ready to crush us, the light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot comprehend it or overcome it. The darkness cannot put it out. Part of shining that light into the darkness is God coming to live among us, becoming one of us. John says it in just a few words, and he speaks as a poet, “The Word became flesh and lived among us.” That sounds short and sweet, but it is so rich in meaning. When John says, “Word,” he packs a lot into a few letters. Word conveys

To quote the Grinch, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas:” by Dr. Seuss: And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he
puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store? What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit
more?”

DEC 2015/JAN 2016 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 5
CHURCH COUNCIL APPROVES A SIX-WEEK SABBATICAL FOR PASTOR CHUCK: March 28 – May 12. Following Easter (March 27), I will take six weeks for a time of study and research- a sabbatical. I will be back leading worship on May 15th, Pentecost and Confirmation. I shared with the Mutual Ministry and Finance Committees and ultimately Church Council, that I would like to take the time to worship/visit six churches that worship between 125 -175 a Sunday (like St. Mark’s), and are liturgical. Their lead instrument of worship must be organ, supplemented with other instruments. I want to do as close to an “apples to apples” search as possible. Will all six churches be Lutheran? No, I hope to visit an Episcopalian church, as well as a Methodist, Presbyterian and United Church of Christ Church. What am I looking for? Well, I will contact the Pastor and let him/her know when I am coming to visit. I want to observe and experience their worship practice for that given Sunday. During the week I will invite the Pastor out to lunch to discuss some of their church’s “highs” and lows”-when it comes to worship, what has or has not worked for them. I will also invite out (separately) to lunch the Director of Music (like Judy) and the Director of Family Ministry/youth person (like Dawn). I want to hear from them some of their successes and things that did not go as they had hoped. I want to hear about their programs of ministry, specifically worship, music, family ministry. I want to hear about their joys and disappointments. I want to be able to bring back some of their program ideas to St. Mark’s, a liturgical church that worships between 125 – 175 people. What worked well for them might not necessarily work for St. Mark’s. What proved unsuccessful for them might be worth our consideration in trying. Why a Sabbatical? Well, these are challenging times for churches, (our church) particularly mainline Protestant churches, liturgical churches. It is my hope, my prayer that I might learn a few things that will help us grow here in the valley. And, who knows, I might be able to share something with the staff of the churches I meet, share some of the
programs of ministry of St. Mark’s that might help them grow. Who will cover the six Sundays I’m gone? David Lintvedt will preach and lead the four non-communion Sundays: April 10, 17, 24 and May 8th; Pastor Paul Bartlett (member of St. Mark’s) will cover the two communion Sundays-:April 3 and May 1. What about Pastoral emergencies (hospital visits, funerals, homebound communions)? Two areas of coverage here. One, Pastor Paul Bartlett has offered to be available in such instances. Second, other area clergy: Pastor Nick Pence, Palm; Pastor Becky Eisenhart, St. John’s; and Rev. Deborah-Rahn-Clemens, New Gosh have offered to provide emergency pastoral care. I have covered for them when they were on sabbatical. I thank the members of Church Council Finance and Mutual Ministry for their support and approval of my Sabbatical next year. I hope that you, the members, will also see the wisdom of my taking the six weeks to do this and also your blessing. Pastor Chuck

the creative power of God. Word embodies God’s mystery, God’s purity, God’s orderliness. This pure and powerful Word became flesh in Jesus. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Maybe we cannot say exactly how the DNA worked on that one, but we rejoice that God understands us. John may not present us with an engaging story about a confused girl wondering what the angel meant by telling her she was God’s vessel. John does speak to us about the darkness all around us. In Jesus we see the glowing light that pushes the darkness back so we can see the truth. Part of the truth is that God loves us and understands us. In Jesus the Word has become flesh. If Christmas leaves us feeling tired, or writhing in grief, remember, God has touched that experience. John’s message of the Word becoming flesh does not take away our grief if we have lost someone we miss terribly at Christmas. God’s grace does redeem that grief and begins to heal it. We take comfort knowing that God understands. Let us offer up our feelings to God. If we indeed do experience cheer, let us give thanks to God. If we find this time of the year painful, let us accept God’s healing love, a love that knows our pain, and cares enough to share it with us.
