FROM THEPASTOR’SDESKHumanae vitae (1968-2018) EMBRACING GOD'S VISION FOR MARRIAGE, LOVE AND LIFE

A 50TH ANNIVERSARY SYMPOSIUM

July 25, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Humanae vitae, the papal encyclical, written by Blessed Pope Paul VI in 1968. In Humanae vitae, Blessed Pope Paul VI reflects upon how God designed the nature of married love. This he draws from Sacred Scripture and the Catholic Tradition. The Holy Father writes that married love is fully human (involving the body and soul). Married love is total, faithful, and fruitful. While society lauded the apparent advantages of the birth control pill and other forms of contraception, Pope Paul VI prophesied that if artificial methods of birth control became widespread, there would be several very disastrous outcomes: 1) an increase in marital infidelity and a gradual weakening of morality; 2) men would lose respect for women and treat them as instruments of selfish enjoyment; 3) a dangerous power would be put into the hands of leaders who, caring little about moral law, would mandate contraceptive methods; and 4) it would mislead human beings into thinking that they had unlimited control over their own bodies. Looking at the dramatic increase in the number of cases of divorce, marital infidelity, out-of-wedlock births and cohabitation – the lurid increase of pornography – the absolute scandal of abortion (4,000 induced abortions every day in this country alone – that is not taking into account the early abortions which occur through the use of the pill which acts also as an abortifacient) – many countries mandating sterilization/contraception/abortion programs – a general lowering of basic morality – can anyone honestly say that Pope Paul VI was wrong? Blessed Pope Paul VI, pray for us.

“Like a shepherd he feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs.” ~ Isaiah 40:11

SUNDAY, JULY 22, 2018 • SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NATIONAL NFP AWARENESS WEEK JULY 22-JULY 28, 2018

“Generations of Love: Humanae vitae 1968-2018” is the theme of this year’s Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, a national educational campaign of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to celebrate God’s design for married love and the gift of life and to raise awareness of Natural Family Planning methods. “NFP,” as the U.S. Bishops have written, is supportive of Catholic beliefs about married love because it “respects the God-given power to love a new human life into being.”

– U.S. Bishops, Married Love and the Gift of Life

NFP Week 2018 will highlight the 50th Anniversary of the promulgation of Blessed Pope Paul VI’s encyclical, Humanae vitae, in which he articulates the Church’s teaching about human sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood. This year’s theme, “Generations of Love,” joyfully commemorates the 50th Anniversary and legacy of Humanae vitae, inviting a reflection on how openness to God’s plan for married love and responsible parenthood creates the opportunity for great fruit in the lives of married couples and their families, a legacy of love for generations to come. The dates of Natural Family Planning Awareness Week, July 22-28, 2018, annually highlight the anniversary of Humanae vitae July 25, as well as the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Mother, July 26.

Please see the display table at the back of church for resources for you and your family.

Join the movement! Pray for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty.

MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR – Holy Angels Parish/School has an opening for a Maintenance Supervisor. This is a full-time position with full benefits. If interested, please send a letter of interest and résumé to Jill Heitmeyer at [email protected].

HERE I AM, LORDMy name is Jonathan Jergens and I am a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. I just completed the Pre-Theology program, and I will be entering Theology I this fall. I am originally from Miamisburg, Ohio, and my home parish is Our Lady of Good Hope. I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome, and for the strong support that this parish in particular has shown for religious vocations. We could not do it without your support!

A little about myself: Prior to entering seminary, I was in the United States Army for almost 13 years. During that time, I lived in South Korea for a year, and deployed six times – three times to Iraq and three times to Afghanistan. Through those 13 years though, that “whisper” of God inviting me to discern the priesthood never went away.

About two years prior to entering seminary, I really made an effort to participate more at my local parish in North Carolina, where I was living at the time. I got involved in RCIA, Knights of Columbus, and Confirmation. It was there that I really started to seriously discern the priesthood. I began doing some research and eventually reached out to Fr. Dan Schmitmeyer (the former pastor here at Holy Angels), the Archdiocesan Vocations Director. I entered seminary in 2016.

COME HOME...Are you or do you know someone who is being led to the Catholic Faith? RCIA will be gathering and joining for fellowship and a deeper journey with the Catholic faith starting in August.

RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and is the process for becoming Catholic and accepting Christ and His teachings in the fullest through the Catholic Church. RCIA is a journey for adults who have a relationship with Jesus Christ and are being called to explore the Catholic faith in a deeper, meaningful way through Baptism, Confirmation and the Holy Eucharistic.

As a congregation, we ask for prayers for those adults surrounding us who are seeking the Lord and the Catholic faith. Your witness may be the witness they need to become a Disciple of Christ and a brother/sister in the Catholic faith. Let our daily works be the true evangelization of the works of our Lord.

If you are interested in participating in RCIA, please reach out to Missy Bennett, Coordinator of Religious Education, at [email protected] or call 498-0433, ext. 13.

Holy Angels parishioner, James Walters, son of Rod and Lisa Walters. James is making his first vows

for the Congregation of the Holy Cross on Saturday, July 28, at their novitiate in Cascade, Colorado. Please continue to remember him in your prayers. Thank you.

LAY PASTORAL MINISTRY PROGRAMPope Francis calls us all to “missionary discipleship.” The Lay Pastoral Ministry Program can equip you to respond with a “Yes!” The LPMP is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and helps laymen and laywomen grow in faith, discern and develop gifts for ministry and gain the knowledge and confidence needed to serve families, communities and parishes more effectively. Saturday morning and afternoon courses in Church history, liturgy, ecclesiology, morality and Christology fit into a busy adult schedule. Interviews are now ongoing for the nondegreed Certificate option offered at Sacred Heart of Jesus in McCartyville. All lay students will receive a 25% tuition reduction this year, so there has never been a better time to learn about your faith and prepare for new opportunities. Call Deacon Hal Belcher at 419-305-5486 for information or to schedule an appointment.

FEAST OF ST. PHILOMENAFather Steve Mondiek of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in McCartyville will be celebrating the Feast of St. Philomena on Saturday, August 11, with 8:00 a.m. Holy Mass, Exposition, Rosary, Special Prayers, and Benediction. You will have the opportunity to be blessed and prayed over with a Relic of St. Philomena. The Novena to St. Philomena starts August 2. Copies of the Novena will be available on the Parish website, in the parish office, and in the Gathering Space. Please contact the Parish Office at 937-394-3823 if you have any questions.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

St. James the Greater, Apostle

Feast Day – July 25This week, we celebrate the Feast of St. James the Greater, Apostle. We call St. James “the Greater” simply to distinguish him from another Apostle, St. James, the son of Alphaeus, or “the Lesser.” This is merely an indication that the former was older than the latter. St. James and his brother St. John the Evangelist – or as our Lord named them “the Sons of Thunder,” were called by our Lord as they mended their nets with their father Zebedee on the Sea of Galilee. Along with Andrew and Peter, they were the first called by our Lord in Galilee. St. James was privileged to be among those to witness some of the greatest events in the ministry of our Lord, including the Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden. Following Christ’s Ascension, James preached the Gospel in Jerusalem, and – according to tradition – evangelized in Spain. He was martyred under the orders of Herod Agrippa I in Jerusalem in the year 42 or 44. According to tradition, his body rests in Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This site became and remains an important place of pilgrimage, and for this reason we look to St. James the Greater as patron saint of pilgrims. St. James, pray for us.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS“The human body includes right from the beginning...the capacity of expressing love, that love in which a person becomes a gift – and by means of this gift – fulfills the meaning of his being and existence.”

– Saint John Paul II

Holy Angels will be intertwining the teachings of Saint John Paul II on the Theology of the Body in the parish school curriculum and in the PSR Programs for our First through Eighth Grade Programs. Theology of the Body is SJPII’s integrated vision of the human person and is grounded in truth, love and beauty. SJPII delivered these messages at Wednesday papal audiences in Rome from 1974 through 1984.

This curriculum emphasizes the theme of love as a self-gift and calls us to love in the image of God. Holy Angels will be using the Theology of Body curriculum from Ruah Woods Press, which has been approved by the Most Reverend Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr, Archbishop of Cincinnati.

HUMOR IN SACRED SCRIPTURE Join us at the Maria Stein Shrine on Tuesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 26, from 7:00-8:00 p.m., The Shrine Adoration Guild Learning Series will offer two sessions presented by Sister Joyce Ann Zimmerman, C.PP.S. Because Sacred Scripture is the inspired word of God, we tend to take it very seriously, and we should. Sacred Scripture is how we learn about God’s fidelity, Jesus’ Good News and the Holy Spirit’s Gifts to us. From this relationship with our Triune God, we are set in the right direction of moral living and charitable self-giving. Yet, some of Sacred Scripture is really quite humorous. What new insights might we gain if we allow ourselves the freedom to laugh with God? The first session will consider some humorous passages from the Old Testament; the second session, from the New Testament. Come and be prepared to laugh!

UPCOMING EVENTS TRANSFIGURATION CENTER FOR SPIRITUAL REWEWAL3505 Calumet Road, Ludlow Falls, OH

The Bible Timeline of the Great Adventure Series will begin Wednesday, August 15, and then weekly 11 more weeks from 10:00-11:30 a.m. If you want to learn more about the Bible and how it can enrich your faith, this is a great place to begin. The cost is only $20.00, which includes a study guide.
