    ● 2 man named mark re!erred to in the "i"le and early christian tradition● Mysterious man in gethsemane who witnessed esus arrest+ he is only

mentioned in mark(s gospel● 3is mother owned the house where the last supper was held so perhaps

mark was in the house at the time

Why did christianity appeal to people● Women were treated "adly and discriminated+ in christianity e#eryone was

e4ual● 'ins can "e !orgi#en i! you are genuinely sorry !or what you ha#e done+

this would apply to criminals● *utcasts will "e accepted● 'la#es were treated "adly "ut e#eryone in christianity was treated e4ually

Why were christians so unpopular● The romans worshipped many Gods whereas in christianity there was only

    one God

    ● They were seen as unsocia"le "ecause they didn’t come to parties● There were rumours a"out how they worshipped such as they were

thought to "e canni"als● Blamed !or "ad economy "ecause they were no longer "uying o!!erings to

take to shrines● 5ero "lamed christians !or the great !ire in 6ome

$alming o! the storm“Jesus and the disciples were on a boat on the sea of Galilee when waves rushed overand into the boat, Jesus was sleeping so they woke him up and said ‘Master, do you not

care if we drown’ Jesus told the wind and waves to be still and they did so, he then saidto the disciples ‘Why are you so afraid do you still have no faith ’! "hey were terrifiedand asked each other who is this man, even the wind and the waves obey him# The ship on rough seas was an early christian sym"ol+ representing the church sailingo#er the stormy seas o! li#e to God7 This story would inspire people to trust in God ande#en though they may lapse in !aith God will still "e there and !orgi#e them7

/esus’ BaptismThe "aptism was the !irst signi!icant e#ent in /esus’ li!e7 ‘$t that time %esus came fromnaserath in Galilee and was baptised by %ohn in the %ordan! $s %esus was coming up outof the water, he saw heaven being torn open and a spirit descending on him like a dove!

$nd a voice came from heaven ‘you are my son, whom & love' with you & am well pleased’ The water represents purity and the cleansing o! his sins+ the do#e is the sign o! peaceand represents the holy spirit9 the holy spirit inspires esus to start his messianicministry7The hea#ens opening is an old testament sym"ol and shows God is welcoming him+ the"aptism pro#es esus is the messiah and God claimed him as his son7

The Temptation3appens immediately a!ter the "aptism+ /esus trying to prepare !or his task7 ‘$t once

the spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert for () days, beingtempted by satan! *e was with the wild animals, and the angels attended him’ daysis o!ten used in the old testament to signi!y a long period o! time7 Wild animals wereo!ten seen as demons and satan "eing there meant he was "eing se#erely tested7 ;nthe old testament angels were messengers o! God who "rought lo#e and support so itrepresents God supporting him7 This story might help christians "eing persecuted as itshows that we should trust God and he will support us7 This story shows esus is readyto start his ministry+ that he has authority o#er satan and he is aware o! God’s support7

    $aesarea )hilippi

“Jesus asked the disciples ‘who do people say & am ’ and they replied ‘some say Johnthe +aptist' others say li%ah or one of the prophets’ but Jesus asked them, ‘who do yousay & am ’! -eter answered ‘you are the .hrist’! Jesus told them not to tell anyone, hethen began to teach them about the son of man who would suffer and be killed butthree days later he would rise again! -eter began to shout at him for saying thesethings but Jesus rebuked him ‘Get behind me satan' you do not have in mind the thingsof God but the things of men’ he said# This story is important "ecause it is the !irst time esus is acknowledged as the messiah7;t is also the !irst time we hear the passion narrati#e7 ;t also shows that peter is the maindisciple7 $aesarea )hilippi is o!ten called a watershed as as all o! /esus teachings"ecame pri#ate a!terwards7 3e needed to !ocus on teaching the disciples e#erything"e!ore he was captured+ which would ha#e happened sooner i! he continued to teachand heal pu"lically7

“Jesus took -eter, James and John up a mountain where he transfigured! *is clothesbecame da//ling white and li%ah and Moses appeared talking to Jesus! -eter said tothem ‘0et us put up 1 shelters, one for each of you’ the disciples didn’t know what to say because they were frightened! "hen a cloud appeared and a voice said ‘"his is my sonwhom & love, 0isten to him2’ 3uddenly li%ah, Moses and the cloud disappeared andJesus told them not to tell anyone what had happened# /esus shining white represents purity and shows his di#inity as he is more than ust aman7 The cloud indicated Gods presence and again he spoke like in the Baptism+claiming /esus as his son7 Moses and .li ah were important !igures in the old testament7Their presence showed that they appro#ed o! /esus and his teachings+ also it pro#es

0While Jesus was at +ethany he went into the house of a man named simon! $ womancame with a %ar of e5pensive perfume, she broke the %ar above %esus’ head and pouredit all over him! "he other men in the room critici/ed her and said she should have sold it and given the money to the poor! +ut Jesus told them what she did was right as therewould always be poor people but he wouldn’t always be there so they should do whatthey can before he dies! Jesus then said the woman and the story would be preachedaround the world and be remembered in every Gospel’ 3e was anointed "y a woman showing that women ha#e authority7 'he also recogniseswhat(s going to happen to /esus as you usually anoint a dead "ody7 ;t shows the mendon’t !ully recognise what is going to happen to /esus7 >ings were o!ten anointed as asign that they had "een chosen "y God+ the word messiah means anointed one7 /esusde!ends the woman+ an outcast which re en!orces /esus’ message o! lo#e7 /esus saysshe will "e remem"ered throughout the world which shows how important women will"e in the church7 0?ou will always ha#e poor people "ut not me’ 'hows esus is only a

human "eing as he is "eing sel!ish+ and that the disciples should listen to him as hewon’t "e there much longer7

The Betrayal/udas "etrayed /esus+ this might "e "ecause he wasn’t the messiah he was e&pecting7Because /udas was a @ealot he wanted a strong military leader which /esus was not sohe was angry7 2lso "ecause the sanhedrin o!!ered him a reward and !or the past = yearshe had li#ed with nothing "ecause he was a disciple7

The last supper “Jesus arranged the passover meal to be held in a private room! While they were eating Jesus told them that one of them would betray him! "he disciples were upset and eachof them asked ‘surely you don’t mean me ’ Jesus answered ‘&t will be one of the twelve,"he son of man will die as the scriptures say' but how terrible for that man who betraysthe son of man2 &t would have been better for that man if he had never been born2’ Jesus took a piece of bread broke it, gave thanks and shared it with the disciples hethen did the same to the wine! "hey then sang a hymn and went to the mount of olives# This story is important "ecause it is where we get communion !rom+ which is a timewhen we get spiritual strength !rom God7 ;n the story /esus tells the disciples that one o! them will "etray him7 /esus knows he has to die "ut he tries to sway /udas so he doesnot ha#e to "e the reason !or his capture and death7 The disciples united togetherthrough sharing the meal and would "e united with /esus a!ter his death7

Gethsemane“"hey went to a place called Gethsemane and Jesus asked the disciples to sit and waitwhile he prayed! *e took -eter, James and John and asked them to keep watch as hewas deeply distressed and troubled! *e fell to the ground and prayed ‘$bba, 6ather,"ake this cup from me’ *e returned to find the disciples sleeping, he shouted at them‘Watch and -ray so that you will not fall into temptation! "he spirit is willing but the fleshis weak’ 4nce more he went and prayed but when he came back he found them asleep!Jesus returned for a third time and told them to get up ‘0ook the son of man is delivered into the hands of sinners’ he said to them#!

This is the !irst time we see /esus like this+ upset and distraught he was also annoyedand worried that e#en his closest disciples couldn’t stay awake7 $hristians can relate to/esus in the Garden o! Gethsemane "ecause sometimes we might think we ha#e theworld on our shoulders when we deal with stress and pro"lems in our li!e7 $hristians"eing persecuted might !ind this story a source o! encouragement "ecause it showedwe must trust in God7 Many christians can also relate to )eter+ /ames and /ohn as theywanted to stay awake "ut could not7

The arrest o! /esus“Jesus was speaking with Judas when an armed crowd arrested Jesus! 4ne of thedisciples drew his sword and cut of the high priest slaves ear, but Jesus said ‘why haveyou come here armed when you did not arrest me all those times & was teaching in thetemple’ then all the disciples ran away# /esus remained calm and did not panic "ecause he had prayed unlike the disciples andhe knew it had to happen7 The disciples panicked "ecause they had not preparedthemsel#es and were caught o!! guard

The 'anhedrin Trial“"he sanhedrin took Jesus to the high priest7s house to be trialed, peter followed behind them! "he council could not find any evidence against him so they got witnesses to lie,but none of the stories agreed! "he high priest asked him ‘$re you the messiah, the sonof the blessed God ’ Jesus answered ‘& am’ "he high priest took this as +lasphemy sothey all agreed to put him to death! "hey blindfolded Jesus spat and hit him before theguards came to take him away# %uring the trial the 'anhedrin "roke many rules

    ● The trial shouldn’t ha#e "een held at night● Aerdict should ha#e "een gi#en at least a day a!ter the trial● ;t should ha#e "een held in the hall o! hewn stone● The trial should ha#e "egan with reasons why the accused is innocent● .#idence should "e gi#en "y 8 witnesses whose testimony agrees● The high priest shouldn’t ask direct 4uestions● *nly when God’s personal name is used is it "lasphemy

The trial "e!ore )ilate“"he teachers of law handed Jesus over to -ilate, who 8uestioned him! ‘$re you theking of the %ews ’ ‘3o you say’ Jesus replied! "he chief priests accused Jesus of manythings so pilate asked him again ‘$ren’t you going to answer, 0isten to all theiraccusations’ $gain Jesus did not say anything and -ilate was ama/ed!

$t every passover meal -ilate would release a prisoner! When a crowd gathered -ilateasked them, ‘who do you want me to free, Jesus or +arabbas’ "he chief priests had told the crowd to ask for +arabbas so +arabbas was set free by -ilate! *e then asked whatthey wanted him to do with Jesus and they shouted ‘.rucify him2’ 3o he handed Jesusback to the chief priests to be whipped and crucified#!)ilate was a pre!ect o! /udaea at the time so he needed to keep the /ews on his sideduring )asso#er so he released a prisoner e#ery year7 )ilate could clearly see duringthe trial that there was no case against /esus and i! he released him it would antagonisethe sanhedrin which he would ha#e liked7 3owe#er "ecause the people wantedBara""as to "e set !ree he could not7

2!terwards the soldiers took /esus away and made him wear a crown o! thorns and apurple ro"e7 They mocked him !or saying he was king o! the ews so they spat and "eathim7 2!ter they had !inished they led him away to "e cruci!ied7Was )ilate a coward

“Joseph of $rimathea asked pilate for the body of Jesus so he could bury it 8uicklybefore the sabbath! -ilate was surprised that Jesus had died so 8uickly but agreed thatJoseph could have the body! *e wrapped it in a linen sheet and placed it in a tombmade of solid rock, he then rolled a large stone in front of the entrance!
