RELIGION ROUNDUP n BY DENNIS O’NEIL NEW ERA FEATURE WRITER Standing in Fort Camp- bell Memorial Park Wednes- day morning, 10 children gently sang the Christian hymn “On Ea- gles’ Wings” with a piano track accom- panying them on a portable radio nearby. After finish- ing the song, the students turned and pledged alle- giance to a nearby Amer- ican flag, the steady buzz of nearby traffic turning their voices into faint whis- pers. They stood in front of the Gander memorial statue, erected to honor 248 American soldiers, many of them members of the 101st Airborne Di- vision (Air Assault), who died in a plane crash in Gander, Newfoundland, in 1985. Members of the 101st are also known as the Screaming Eagles, and the children, sixth graders from SS. Peter and Paul Catholic School, sang “On Eagles Wings” in their honor. At the end of their cere- mony, they each laid roses on the memorial. Standing nearby, Christy Al- lard, whose son, Alex, participated in the cere- mony, watched the pro- ceedings proudly. The theme for this year’s celebration was “faith, aca- demics and service” and students undertook several community service projects throughout the week. Students delivered cook- ies to local fire depart- ments, food baskets to St. Luke’s Free Clinic and Jen- nie Stuart Medical Center and visited Covington’s Convalescent Center.
