DIL M contactors from 580 A are vacuum contactors that offer considerable advan-tages over air-break contactors: • The switching chamber remains absolutely maintenance free for the entire device

lifespan • The electrical lifespan is significantly longer than with air-break contactors • It is possible to achieve a higher packing density and cleaner distribution chamber

since no open arcing occurs

Highly efficient switching The benefits of vacuum technology arise from the closedsystem of vacuum switching tubes that excludes any externalinfluences on the switching sequences within and at the sametime avoids the gases that normally arise from switching. The most important feature of vacuum switching tubes istheir long lifespan whilst switching highest currents.

This arises as a result of lower contact burn since no arcingtakes place in the vacuum.Vacuum technology allows smallerswitchgear dimensions than with conventional contactorsswitching in air. Yet higher currents can be controlled byparallel connection of the switching tubes, where resistiveloads (AC-1) are to be switched.

A glance into the vacuum

The cross-section of the vacuum switching tube shows the fixed and movingcontacts. The expansion bellows made from thin metal sheet expands and contractswith the contact movement while ensuring that the system remains sealed. All the copper-coloured parts in the picture carry current. The ceramic insulatingtube separates the incoming from the outgoing side of the switching tube. This technology has been tried and proven since the 1980ies.

Sophisticated production expertise

The production of high-vacuum swit-ching tubes is technically demanding. Moeller has developed these switchingtubes in-house and is producing themat its switchgear factory at Unna wherethe following critical production stepsare mastered • Manufacture of the exquisitely fine

bellows with their extremely long lifeexpectation

• Measures to distribute the currentuniformly over the whole contactsurfaces, which determine the lifespan

• Multiple gas-tight connections between metal and ceramic materials.

The pictures show the vacuum switching tubes being prepared for the soldering process.

Compact dimensions The three switching tubes together

with their electromechanical drivesystem are extremely compactly

arranged. This in turn allows vacuumcontactors to excel by their

small dimensions.

Staying Cool withClever Electronics

All the DIL M contactors from 185 A up to 2000 A have electronically controlleddrives that result in outstanding benefits for the application: • Significantly less heat rise in the switchgear cabinet due to the sealing

consumption being reduced to just 4%• Design engineers need to allow only for small control transformers due to

reduced pick-up consumption • Considerably wider voltage tolerance than the Standard demands represents

greater reliability in the event of voltage fluctuation • Long contact lifespan by optimisation of contact forces• Built-in suppressor circuit for motor protection• Auxiliary contacts: 2 NO, 2 NC

Classical:A1/A2 are conventionally connected to the voltage. + +

Direct actuation from the PLC:A 24 V PLC output can be connected to A3/A4 without a coupling relay. – +

Actuation by low-consumption signal generators:Low capacity signal generators such as printed circuit board relays, controlcircuit devices or position switches can be connected directly to A10/A11.

– +

Single voltage coils available for all the customary voltages worldwide. + –Just 4 coils cover any applicationIn the user-friendly version of the DIL M contactors, all application rangesand worldwide customary supply voltages are covered by just four coils. This means simplicity in engineering and a stockholding of just one coil inmost cases. The coil voltage ranges are so wide that they provide safetyeven in unreliable supply networks.

Cool contactors reduce the switchgear cabinet costsDIL M contactors reduce the sealing consumption by 96 %,and thereby considerably lower the heat rise within the switching cabinet. This of course lowers the cost of the panel as well as the running costs. The switching cabinet can be smaller and, in many cases, there is no need for the expensive fan. Example: DIL M185 (RA250)

DC operatedPower consumption: 3.3 Watt

Switching reliably with low pick-up consumption The pick-up consumption has been reduced by 79% withDIL M contactors. For the application, this means that con-siderably smaller control transformers are required. Contactbounce is clearly reduced and this enhances the contact lifespan. Voltage tolerance is 0.7 to 1.15 UC.Example: DIL M185 (RA250)

DC operatedPower consumption: 170 Watt

It is your choice: whether you want the standard or themore user-friendly premier version. All the contactors from185 up to 500 A are available in both versions. All the con-tactors above 500 A are offered in the premier version only.

Leaps in technology demand newresponses: motor protection has be-come significantly simpler and moreeconomical due to newly developedsensor systems and tripping devices. All the Z motor-protective relaysprovide the standard function of pro-tection upon phase failure, overloador current imbalance. But in additionto these functions, the innovative ZEVmotor-protection system from Moellernow offers considerably more: • More compact switchgear cabinet

construction due to 58 times less volume of the current transformers compared to conventional ones.

• Small and light current sensors with extremely wide current ranges simp-lify selection. A small range of device versions reduces stockholding costs.

• Extremely easy fitting – just place the small uniform-field sensors around the cable.

No more need for the awkward fit-ting and connecting of large current transformers with thick cables nor the drilling of mounting plates. Instead, the sensor is simply fastened with velcro.

• Push-button operation and LCD make setting and monitoring easier.

Even the most complex starting condi-tions can be mastered using the ZEVmotor-protection system. Even motorswith long run-up times are reliably pro-tected due to the expansion of the trip-ping classes up to Class 40. Optimumprotection for any motor starting con-dition can be set by merely pre-selec-ting one of the eight tripping classesbetween 5 and 40. An earth fault isquickly detected by means of externalcore-balance transformers. The inte-grated thermistor connection allowsthe relay to be expanded into a fullmotor-protection system.

NZM protects motorsNZM circuit-breakers protect motors and incomers in the event of overload andshort circuit. The short-circuit releases of the NZM can be set to 12 to 14 times therated current in order to prevent the protective element from switching Off duringstarting current peaks.NZM circuit-breakers protect motors reliably and with phase-failure sensitivity from32 A up to1400 A.The comprehensive range of circuit-breakers and corresponding accessories enablesthe equipment to be precisely matched to any number of protective applications(there is a choice even of tripping characteristics), including the selective protectionof systems.
