Health SenseMental illness is commonly connected to a nutrient and mineral defi ciency. The major nutrient absent in these cases is B6 and B12. Depression has also been linked to low levels of folic acid and zinc. A lack of B6 can reduce the brains production of serotonin levels but training with weight bearing exercises will boost the production of Serotonin potentially countering negative effects.

Sometimes aggression will accompany depression; studies have shown a link to a defi ciency in omega-3 and omega-6 in these cases, particularly in those who suffer from bipolar disorders. Adding omega-3 fatty acids in these cases has shown a positive result. This is due to the benefi ts of DHA, the positive fatty acid needed to reduce negative fat in the body and the brain. A study found that a person suffering from depression who took 1gram of omega-3 fatty acids for 12 weeks experienced a decrease in depression related symptoms such as anxiety, sadness and sleeping disorders.

Tech Talk: The Open Wireless Movement by: www.openwireless.org

Imagine a future with ubiquitous open Internet. We envision a world where, in any urban environment: Dozens of open networks are available at your fi ngertips.

Tablets, watches, and other new devices can automatically join these networks to do nifty things.

The societal expectation is one of sharing, and, as a result, wireless Internet is more effi cient.

The false notion that an IP address could be used as a sole identifi er is fi nally a thing of the past, creating a privacy-enhancing norm of shared networks. We’re working with a coalition of volunteer engineers to build technologies that will let users open their wireless networks without compromising their security or sacrifi cing bandwidth. And we’re working with advocates to help change the way people and businesses think about Internet service.

The Open Wireless Movement is a coalition of Internet freedom advocates, companies, organizations, and

Q1: What was your inspiration when it came to deciding to formally step out in to public speaking and personal leadership and organizational development?

Response: Back in the early 1990’s I attended a four day leadership course; during that course I declared my professional purpose and developed my personal mission statement: “To help people and organizations to help themselves”. All of my experiences since that point have continued to reinforce my mission. I believe that helping develop great leaders maximizes the number of people impacted and feeds positive change and growth at both individual and organizational levels.

Q2: When it comes to coaching and problem solving what would you say is your style and what do you believe is the most important aspect?

Response: Let me start by sharing a quote from Theodore Roosevelt and John Maxwell “People do not care what you know until they know how much you care.” I believe this perfectly explains my approach when interacting with others. To me the relationship is the most critical aspect. I can be the person with the greatest amount of knowledge and skills to offer others but, if the individuals I am interacting with do not see me as a person with integrity, honesty, caring and a belief they are the most important person/people in my world at a specifi c point in time, we will all be wasting our time.

Q3: Has technology infl uenced your thoughts on personal leadership and organizational development? If so what are the benefi ts and potential pitfalls to avoid?

Response: Technology is a beautiful thing! I see many benefi ts and the most important is to use technology that enables you to continue to grow as an individual. However, not every piece of technology should be used. It has to fi t you! Your style and your purpose or need you are trying to help fi ll. With every person I interact with it is imperative that I remain focused on the area(s) they are trying to strengthen and only coach and mentor them and introduce tools that will help fi ll their need(s). A potential pitfall is to rely too heavily on technology as it can sometimes lose the personal touch that every great leader needs. Impactful and sustainable leadership is a balance of relationships and results.

Response: I see the future as being very bright. There will always be a need for great leaders. And, there will always be great leaders and not so great leaders. It is important to realize you can always learn something from both. You can be aware of actions that you want to duplicate and make your own and actions you do not want to duplicate. technologists working to develop new wireless technologies and to inspire a movement of Internet openness. We are aiming to build technologies that would make it easy for Internet subscribers to portion off their wireless networks for guests and the public while maintaining security, protecting privacy, and preserving quality of access.

We’re also teaching the world about the many benefi ts of open wireless in order to help society move away from closed networks and to a world in which openness is the default. Our efforts follow the opinion of nationally recognized computer security expert Bruce Schneier, who considers maintaining

an open wireless node a matter of “basic politeness”:

Whenever I talk or write about my own security setup, the one thing that surprises people—and attracts the most criticism—is the fact

that I run an open wireless network at home. There’s no password. There’s no encryption. Anyone with wireless capability who can see my network can use it to access the internet.

To me, it’s basic politeness. Providing internet access to guests is kind of like providing heat and electricity, or a hot cup of tea.

We’re working together to advocate for a world where the Internet will be available to more people while also using the spectrum more effi ciently. And we are working to debunk myths (and confront truths) about open wireless while creating technologies and legal precedent to ensure it is safe, private, and legal to open your network.

Join us. If you’re a technologist, you can join the discussion on our technical mailing list. If you’re an open wireless supporter, embed a widget onto your site. And if you’re an organization or independent advocate willing to actively contribute to the Movement, send an introductory email to [email protected]. Everyone can stay abreast of happenings at the Open Wireless Movement by following our blog.
