Summary of Key Enhancements

Key new features in CES EduPack 2013:

New visual, interactive Start-up screen, making it much easier for students to understand where to start and to choose the relevant database. See item (1).

Updated Search capability—new enhanced search engine provides faster, more accurate and greater flexibility in searching. See item (2).

New Hybrid Synthesizer models—extends modeling capability to include closed-cell foams, honeycombs, short fiber reinforced composites and multilayer materials. See item (3).

Key enhancements to data modules:

Level 1 & 2 database split into two individual databases—makes it clearer for the user to understand which of these introductory levels to use. See item (7).

Updated version of the MaterialUniverse data set—includes new data on metal designations and equivalencies and over one hundred new records for materials used in lightweighting applications (fiber reinforced polymers, aluminum, magnesium and high strength steel alloys). See items (9) and (10).

New databases to support Sustainable Development teaching —Campus wide licenses only. See item (19).

These and other enhancements are detailed below. Descriptions are organized in sections according to software, or database modules.

What’s New?—Detailed Descriptions

This section details all enhancements in the CES EduPack 2013 release, compared with the previous CES EduPack 2012 release.

CES EduPack software

1. New start-up and choose database screen—displayed on start-up and from the ‘Choose database…’ menu. Provides a graphical display of all available databases. Clicking on the graphics loads the associated database. Details as follows:

Databases grouped into Introductory and Advanced categories.

Clicking on the ‘getting started’ link accesses the Getting Started Guides and Video Tutorials on the Teaching Resources website.

Additional databases, such as those available on the Teaching Resources website, can be added by selecting the ‘add database’ link and browsing to the local directory where the database has been saved.

Benefits:

More engaging and intuitive introduction to the software—easier for students to understand where to start.

Equal visibility of all available datasets—easier to choose the right database.

Consistent user experience on start-up and changing database.

2. Updated search capability—new enhanced search engine provides faster, more accurate and greater flexibility in searching. Includes the following capabilities:

Highlights search term on datasheet.

Results ranked by closeness to search term—records with search term in datasheet name or folder path are ranked higher than others.

Searches all available datasets.

Enables search using operators; OR, NOT, ( ), “ ”. —AND is the default operator for multiple terms.

Enables search with wildcards (*, ?)—these only apply when added at the end of the search term.

Handles diacritics – important for searching non-English language databases.

Searches using stemming—for example, searching on conditioned will return hits for condition, conditions, conditioning, as well as conditioned.

Optimized for designation searches—handles different conventions for documenting standards, designations, grade names and codes. For example, the use of spaces, hyphens, slashes, dots, or commas to separate code fragments.

Benefits:

Perform much faster and more accurate searches—particularly when searching on larger datasets.

Rapidly identify search term on datasheets—confirm relevancy of search results.

Get greater search flexibility—use search operators and wildcards.

Search all available datasets.

3. Create your own Hybrid Synthesizer models—new capability to create and run your own models in the Hybrid Synthesizer (Note: the Hybrid Synthesizer is available in the following advanced Level 3 databases: Aerospace, Eco Design, Energy, Polymer, and Sustainability).

Create your own model using the Hybrid Synthesizer Model Writer’s Guide—available on the Teaching Resources website and directly accessible from the Hybrid Synthesizer Choose model dialogue. Includes: step-by-step instructions on how to create and add models and, sample models that double-up as templates for new models.

Benefits:

Customize the Synthesizer to suit your teaching curriculum.

Explore and demonstrate the benefits of novel hybrid materials and structures.

Extend the standard capability of the Hybrid Synthesizer and apply calculations to materials data in CES EduPack.

4. Upgraded Hybrid Synthesizer models—the following additions have been made:

New Multi-layer materials model—estimate the performance of symmetrical and non-symmetrical multilayer materials with between two and seven layers. This is particularly suited for modeling construction panels and packaging laminates.

New Closed-cell foam and Honeycomb (expanded and extruded) options have been added to the Cellular Structures model.

New Short fiber (aligned and random) option has been added to the Composites (Simple Bounds) model.

New Dual material lattice model—investigate how to combine two materials in a lattice structure to achieve a material/structure with a specified coefficient of thermal expansion.

Embodied energy and CO2 Footprint added to all models (except ‘Cellular structures’).

Benefits:

Investigate and demonstrate the mechanical and barrier performance of multilayer materials—optimize material choice and configuration.

Explore the benefits and limitations of a wider range of cellular structures—consider closed-cell foams and honeycombs alongside triangulated lattices and open-cell foams.

Estimate the performance of aligned and random short fiber composites—particularly relevant for studying high-volume production of lightweight composite parts.

Consider environmental impact, alongside cost and performance, for hybrid materials and structures.

5. On-line documentation and help. The Video Tutorials, Getting Started Guides and White Papers are now available on-line and, no longer installed with the software. They are accessed from CES Help and, in the case of the Video Tutorials, from appropriate locations within the software as indicated by a play icon.

Benefits:

Reduces the size of the installation footprint – simplifying distribution to students.

Ensures access to the most up-to-date documentation and tutorials.

6. Enhanced usability—the following new features facilitate use of the software:

Refresh of icons on the main application and graph stage toolbars. New icon for User Defined Records and Help.

Revised behavior of Limit stage window—only one limit stage is now displayed in the right-hand pane. This allows faster operation when using multiple Limit stages.

A new global project setting has been added for ‘Pass not applicable’ and ‘Fail estimates’ values. These are is set from the Tools/Options…/Selection dialog, accessed from the main application toolbar.

Simplify the use of the software and enhance your user experience.

CES EduPack – Introductory Data Modules

7. Level 1+2 database split into two individual databases (Level 1 and Level 2)—simplifies use by reducing the number of Browse and Selection subset options. Avoids confusion between Level 1 and Level 2 records in the Search results and Eco Audit Tool.

Benefits:

Simplifies use of the software.

Avoids confusion between Level 1 and 2 datasheets.

You can focus teaching on the desired level of data, avoiding distraction from datasheets at the other level.

8. MaterialUniverse data

Updated Material prices—new prices are available for all materials in the MaterialUniverse. These have been generated using an enhanced version of Granta’s price model.

Benefits:

Use up-to-date prices, reflecting current differences between material types and classes.

Demonstrate the trade-off between performance and cost for materials.

CES EduPack – Advanced Data Modules

Material and Process Universe (all Level 3 databases)

A new ‘Condition’ field has been added for metal alloys—this describes the thermo-mechanical treatment applied to achieve the quoted performance. Clicking on the field name opens a Design Note which summarizes the nomenclature used to describe the main heat treatments for steel, aluminum, titanium, nickel and copper-based alloys. Follow the link to the Science note for more in-depth scientific information on work hardening and heat treatment and their influence on grain structure and microstructural development in the alloy.

Benefits:

Demonstrate the influence of thermo-mechanical treatment on the performance of metals and relate them to changes in microstructure.

Search the database based on alloy condition. For example: annealed NOT (tempered OR aged).

9. Enhanced coverage of metal designations and equivalencies—a number of developments have been made to simplify searching for metals alloys/designations and browsing the ‘Metals’ branch of the MaterialUniverse.

‘Equivalent’ specifications and designation fields have been added to the datasheet for ferrous, aluminum, magnesium, nickel, and cobalt alloys. These list similar grades based on composition, from other designations systems. Information is included from twelve standards systems (ACI, AISI, ASM, ASTM, BS, BS EN, EN, GB, ISO, JIS, SAE and UNS) classified into six categories: UNS, US, EN (name and number), ISO, GB (Chinese), JIS (Japanese).

There has been a comprehensive review of the cast iron folder:

o BS designations updated with EN designations.

o 38 obsolete BS grades removed.

The main alloying additions and/or key characteristics have been included in the folder names at the designation level of the tree. For example AISI 201 (Low nickel work hardenable)—provides greater information on the type of alloy and the differences between grades.

The first level of the ferrous branch of the MaterialUniverse has been simplified to eight folders: alloy steels, carbon steels, cast iron, coated steel, iron, microalloy and high strength steels, stainless steel, and tool steels.

Benefits:

Wider coverage of metal designations—simplifies browsing and searching for metal alloys.

10. Ninety new lightweighting materials have been added to MaterialUniverse—covering aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, high strength steels and fiber reinforced polymers.

New wrought automotive aluminum alloys (59 records):

o 2008, 2010, 2036 at various tempers (7 records).

o 3004 at various tempers (7 records).

o 5052, 5182, 5754 at various tempers (14 records).

o 6005A, 6009, 6010, 6016, 6022, 6063, 6111 at various tempers (31 records).

Revised and updated cast magnesium alloys (20 records):

o New automotive grades (9 records).

o Revised and updated grades (11 records).

New high strength steels (8 records):

o Dual phase (YS400, YS450), (2 records).

o High strength, low alloy (YS300, YS500), (2 records).

o Press hardening, or Boron steels (3 records).

o Structural steel (S275N), (1 record).

New continuous glass fiber reinforced composites (14 records):

o Glass/polyester: unidirectional, woven and non-crimp reinforcement (8 records).

o Glass/polyamide: woven fiber reinforced PA12, PA6, PA66 (6 records).

Benefits:

Enhanced coverage of materials used for weight reduction—particularly relevant to automotive and transportation applications.

Investigate the benefits and limitations of the different material classes considered for lightweighting applications.

11. Eight new fibers and particulates have been added to the MaterialUniverse:

Fiber (basalt) (1 record).

Particulates (calcium carbonate, talc, mica, wollastonite, dolomite, kaolin) (7 records).

Benefits:

More complete coverage of commonly-used fibers and particulates—supports use of the Hybrid Synthesizer ‘Composites (Simple Bounds)’ models.

12. Two new Nitinol shape memory alloys (wire and bulk form)—datasheets for both the martensitic and austenitic (high temperature) phases have been added.

Benefits:

Support design of medical devices and implants by considering this important medical alloy.

Get data on the performance of this shape memory alloy in both its states (martensitic and austenitic)—enabling its unique behavior to be evaluated in designs.

13. Three new grades of bio-based polyamide, and two grades of flexible polyamide 12:

PA1010, molding and extrusion grade.

PA11, flexible and semi-flexible grades.

PA12, flexible and semi-flexible grades.

Benefits:

Support for environmentally informed design.

Investigate polymers for fuel lines and hydraulic hosing applications.

14. The fracture toughness and impact strength (notched, 23°C) values for all continuous fiber reinforced polymer composite and SMC / BMC records have been revised and updated.

Benefits:

Support for design with composites, lightweighting and environmentally informed design.

15. ProcessUniverse Cost model capability revised and extended as follows:

Cost model extended to continuous shaping processes (roll forming, cold shape rolling, hot shape rolling, hot metal extrusion, shape drawing, wire drawing, powder extrusion, powder rolling, calendaring, polymer extrusion, continuous laminating, pultrusion, ceramic extrusion, tape casting, rammed graphite casting).

‘Tool life’ and ‘Production rate’ values for continuous shaping processes revised and updated.

Added new ‘Secondary process’ and removed ‘Tertiary processes’ classification.

Updated valid ranges for ‘Material price’ and ‘Mass’ and ‘Component length’ parameters in process cost model.

Benefits:

Estimate the semi-finished part cost for materials formed by continuous processes (sheet, bar, rod, profiles, etc.).

Investigate the difference in part costs between batch and continuous processes.

Polymer Edition (Level 3 Polymer)

16. Updated CAMPUS data module—the CAMPUS® Plastics data module has been updated with the latest CAMPUS ISO comparable standards information.

Updated Information on approx. 6,100 resins from 20 leading vendors.

Benefits:

Access the latest CAMPUS data on commercial available grades of polymer.

Study specific commercial grades and suppliers for polymers.

17. Updated IDES Plastics data module—the Granta IDES Plastics database has been updated with the latest information. Includes new grades and updates to manufacturer details to account for mergers and acquisitions in polymer manufacturing.

Approx. 88,000 datasheets for specific resin grades.

Approx. 850 suppliers worldwide.

Approx. 67,000 ASTM and 39,000 ISO datasheets.

Hyperlinks to ASTM and ISO datasheets on IDES website.

Benefits:

Access the latest IDES data.

Simplify the identification of specific commercial grades and suppliers for polymers.

Energy Edition (Level 3 Energy)

18. Renamed Low Carbon Power edition—Includes the following components:

Low carbon power (19 systems).

Nuclear power (6 systems).

Energy storage (16 systems).

Level 3 Material and Process Universe.

Eco Audit Tool.

Hybrid Synthesizer.

Benefits:

Support courses considering the development of low carbon power generation systems.

Investigate the benefits and limitations of the various power systems – illustrate their impact

on material supply/resources, land usage, delivery cost (price, energy and CO2), etc.

Sustainable Development Edition* (Level 2 & Level 3 Sustainability)

*Developmental edition—available with campus-wide licenses.

19. Extended version of the Eco Design and Energy Editions—includes the following additional data and functionality:

Extended version of the MaterialUniverse—includes data on; Critical Materials Status (base element, abundance, price volatility and total risks), countries and volumes of production and, links to countries in the Nations of the World and Legislation and Regulations tables.

Nations of the world—data on 210 nations, including data and metrics on: geography, people, education, human rights & good governance, economy & development, health, energy, carbon & environment and, military.

Legislation and Regulations—data on 44 legislations/regulations, including applicability to industrial sector and enacting countries.

Enhanced version of the Eco Audit Tool.

Benefits:

Investigate and demonstrate the importance of material criticality on the selection and

availability of materials.

Promote discussion around materials, the environment, regulation, resources and

humanity.

Support the teaching of Eco Design and Green Engineering.

Teaching Resources

20. The Teaching Resources have been updated as follows:

Updated PowerPoint lectures, (English, French, Spanish and German).

Video tutorials for CES EduPack now online. Available via YouTube and on our website. Playlists help students get started.

Updated Getting Started Guides (English, French, German and Spanish).

o New ready-made project files (Sensorial properties, Science-based teaching,

Manipulating properties and so on).

o 5 new and 3 updated white papers.

o New exercise booklet on the Energy Edition.

o French resources: Translated white paper, Eco Audit Files, Eco Audit Exercises

and 16 newly translated powerpoint lecture units.
