I am in love. Call me weird, in fact, call me anything you like,but I am truly in awe of the protein that is BOTOX®. I am alsoconfident that, after reading this information, you too will beimpressed.

BOTOX® has previously been named as one of the safestmedicines on the planet, based on the wide range ofapproved indications in over seventy countries around theworld.

Most of the discussion within this book will be based onthe cosmetic use of BOTOX®. Further on, you will findinformation relating to the various therapeutic indications.This information will give just an insight into the therapeuticconditions and their relationship to BOTOX®. The informationshould be used as a first discussion base only and shouldnot replace proper consultation with your healthprofessional.

How many people do you know who openly admit tohaving BOTOX® for cosmetic reasons?

Are they concerned that they will get a bad rap for being

vain? Are they embarrassed that they needed it? Maybe theydid not need it per se, but had the prevention of lines in mind.Who truly cares? Do you? I don’t. If it is right for you, andgives you a lift in this life of constant challenges, go for it.

The cosmetic application of BOTOX® has been activeinternationally for more than twenty years. During this time,there has been a constant stream of media press, positiveand negative, regarding this wrinkle relaxer. On thetherapeutic side of the business, BOTOX® has been availablefor over thirty years.

Never has there been, and probably never again will therebe, a medicine or product that has caused such constantuniversal interest in the pros and cons of cosmeticenhancement. Surrounded by strong and adamant opinions,which sadly are often based on ignorance, BOTOX® isalmost a daily topic, part of our vernacular.

BOTOX® is a poison, I hear you say. So is paracetamol, ifused in the wrong way and at inappropriate doses. In fact,many medicines are poisons if you look at the truepharmacology of the active ingredients, and many poisonscan be medicines. Chemotherapy is a prime example of thisstatement.

So much information and news constantly circulatesabout BOTOX® that it is a wonder that it is not part of thescience curriculum in our schools — or better still, bringdeportment class back and slot BOTOX® lessons in there.Prevention is always better than cure.

I am now, at the age of forty eight, a self-confessedBOTOX® addict. I was, from August 2003 till July 2008, also anemployee of Allergan, Inc. Australia. Allergan, Inc. is the onlycompany in the world to manufacture BOTOX®. Allergandoes not make BOTOX® for any other company either.

I had been an employee for only a few weeks beforetrying BOTOX®, but from that moment on, I have kept up my

treatments; when on a good thing…I always know when I amdue for my next treatment because I get comments fromfriends and family telling me I am looking “tired.” So, I bookin quick smart, and in a very short period of time, I lookbright and refreshed again. Got to love that. A quick andeasy procedure, no down time, always looking fabulous —well, let’s say refreshed, which is rather fabulous when youfeel less than so.

No one is too old to try BOTOX® for therapeutic reasons.Nor for cosmetic reasons either, although they may not seegreat improvements if they have very loose, wrinkled facialskin. Children as young as two may have BOTOX® fortherapeutic reasons, with life-changing results.

BOTOX® is not just for the girls when we are talkingabout cosmetic treatments. Boys can do it too, and they are.At least fifteen percent of all clientele at any clinic are male.I am sure that we will see this percentage grow. As menrealise that the improvements are subtle, they are less likelyto brand BOTOX® treatments as “feminine”.

BOTOX® has a high public profile. Ask around, and youwon’t find too many people who have never heard ofBOTOX®, but you will probably find a lot of self-proclaimedexperts on the subject. So, next time you bump intosomeone who claims to know all, spring a few questions onthem using the information you have picked up from thisbook; that’ll test them. Of course, it would be in my interestthat they too have read the book and are, in fact, quiteknowledgeable for having done so. Worst case scenario:you will have a very accurate and stimulating conversationwith your new acquaintance.

INTRODUCTION

Cosmetic treatments of BOTOX® are not for everyone, itis true. I have just not found anyone over the age of twentyfive who falls into this category.

The trademark name of BOTOX® refers to a toxin that ismade by bacteria, processed by a pharmaceutical companyand packaged in a small sterile glass vial as a white freeze-dried powder ready for reconstitution and subsequentinjection. BOTOX® is a medicine that is represented by anoverwhelming body of peer reviewed clinical evidencecontinually demonstrating safety, predictability and efficacyin repeatable outcomes.

The toxin is produced naturally by the anaerobic, rodshaped, gram-positive bacterium known as Clostridiumbotulinum.

The chemical makeup of the BOTOX® molecule, or toxin,consists of two chains of protein joined together: a light, orshort, chain and a heavy, or longer, chain. Each chain playsan important part in the process of entering the nerveending and deactivating the nerve ending’s ability toexchange acetylcholine so as to prevent contraction of theassociated muscle. More will be explained in the followingchapter on how BOTOX® works.
