DREW BORPHYMAKING THINGS LOOK GOOD SINCE 1971

Page 7: Relax

In high school Drew Brophy’s guidance counselor pulled him aside and sternly warned, “Drew, you can’t just surf and paint your whole life.” He was crushed, because those were the only two things that he was good at. He was deter-mined to prove her wrong. Drew Brophy has been a professional surf lifestyle artist for over 20 years. If you ask Drew what he does for a living, he’ll say “It’s my job tomake things look cool.”

As a young surfer, Drew’s career took off when he started painting his edgy artwork ontosurfboards. He became known worldwide for painting surfboards using techniques thathe developed using water-based paint pens. He traveled the globe painting for some of thebest surfboard shapers in the world. In the late 1990s, Drew expaned his ori-gonal artwork for use on many different things,

like skateboards, t-shirts, wakeboards and other useful items. Having the opportunity toexperiment with many different surfaces and products allowed Drew to grow tremendou-sly as an artist.

Drew has created thousands of paintings over the years, which has led him to develop a distinct style of bright colors and energy that has become well recognized.

With help from his business partner and wife, Maria, Drew has made his paintings available for licensing and currently is partnered with over thity great companies to create cool products with his art. Together, Drew and Maria formed Son of the Sea, Inc., an art agency that represents Drew’s Surf Lifestyle Art. Drew creates art while Maria runs the business.

They also help other artists find success, as well, through workshops and sharing info-rmation through their blogs. As a team, they’ve guided many artists by sharing their own life lessons. Every image of Drew’s art begins life as a painting, created in his studio inSan Clemente, California. Drew’s original paintings are available to collectors throughart shows and online sales.

Drew’s inspiration comes from the adventures of traveling and surfing the globe with hiswife and son. He paints the lifestyle they live, one filled with peeling waves, sun-swept beaches and the simple joys that life has to offer.Drew’s mission is “to inspire genera-tions of people to live the life of their dreams.” He strives to be an example and show theworld the good life through his artwork. His mantra is “Life is Good,” and it is.

EMil kOzak

Danish artist Emil Kozak is a current resident of Barcelona and has collaborated with companies like Vans, Elements and Burton (can you tell - he’s also an extreme sports ad-dict?) His original inspiration for his Infectious art was his Spanish traffic experiences. He’s done a bunch of stuff, like the Kelly Slater surfboard, LAB skateboards, Hulger phones and off course clothes. Since then his cute whale illustration has cropped up on Kelly Slater’s personalized surfboard. Now you can get a little of Emil’s life aquatic on your laptop and walls.

TINY INTERVIEW EMIL KOZAL

Tell us a bit about yourself: what do you do for a living?EK: I am a graphic designer working on illustration, graphic design and artsy shit.

Who was your first major client and how did you manage to get the job?EK: My first real major client was Vans. They contacted me out of the blue one day.

What’s the five things you’d take with you to a deserted island with no electricity?EK: Surfboards and books.

Street art is quite a big thing in Barca, have you ever done any?EK: No, but I’m an active viewer.

You sell your own tees online, here. They are just way cool, but I notice that the print runsare limited and exclusive. Do you do your own screen printing? Are you planning to take it to the next level, or do you want to remain doing what you are doing? When are we going to see an Emil Kozak brand, if ever? EK: I get the prints done in a tiny place where they take care of the production, but the guys are cool and let me hang around and play with their machines. My idea of making tees was to learn about screen printing and having some fun making tees. So, as of now, i amnot planning on taking it to a higher level. Still have a couple of ideas for new runs. But you never know what the future might hold. If somebody would drop by that could take care of all the practical work (mailing, production etc) I would consider making realcollections.

serena is a shaper of culture, gracefulle creating an edge for other to follow. from her chilhoodas a classically trained musician and dancer on the northeast coast, to the wildly wonderfulisland of kauai where the ocean captured her soul, serena is an explorer who thrives on extremes.the ocean provides a constantly changing enviorment vast enough to contain her spirit. She´ll divein the night-ocean, swim with sharks in the caribbean, join the dawn-patrol at the local break,or even surf down a mountain-side filled with snow.

But lately, you´ll find serena surfing the waves of creative freedom without actually surfing verymuch. her musings are well-documented, for you´ll often see her, camera in hand. when serenais not out and about, setting up another gallery installation in san francisco, venice beach or new york city, hand-painting a surfboard in a girls only surf film, volunteering at a benefitto help the ocean environment, or co-managing a business, two birds fly... You´ll find her hiddenaway, paintbrush in hand, lost in a small ocean-sized watercolor of droplets in blues. serena is currently living in san franscisco where she helps run Mollusk Surf shop and Gallery... and isopening her own general store later this year.

Serena’s studio rests behind her retail store, The General Store, in the Sunset District of San Fran-cisco. I’ve always admired people who can successfully operate a business and actively pursue their creative outlet. Serena has a great feature in the most recent December 2010 of Juxtapoz

Serena Mitnik-Miller and General Store are featured in the latest edition of ART FOR ALL a publish-ing from Japan. There is also some mention of other fine establishments in the San Francisco area.
