Degree days
The number of days on which the average temperature is below a chosen baseline,
multiplied by the number of degrees by which the temperature is below the baseline
Degree days
Example – baseline temperature 15.50C
• On June 9th 2014 the average temperature over 24 hrs was 14.50C
• This is 1 degree below our chosen baseline, hence the number of degree days for that day is 1 (day) x 1 (degree) = 1 degree day (DD)
• On January 11th, 2010 the average temperature over 24 hrs was -4.50C
• This is 20 degrees below our chosen baseline, hence the number of degree days for that day is 1 (day) x 20 (degrees) = 20 degree day (DD)
• Do this for every day of the month or year and you have a measure of how much heating you are likely to have needed
