Agenda
• Background of the Kentucky Hybrid Algebra I Project
• Demonstrate KVHS Alg I and Spotlight on Algebra
• Processes/Structures Used
• Model of what a classroom period would look like
• Conversations with teachers
• Next steps – how can I get involved in this research.

Kentucky Hybrid Algebra I Project
• A research project funded by the USDE through REL Appalachia, with online resources from KDE.
• GOAL: To compare outcomes in schools that are using the approach to schools that are not.
• Three areas of impact– Instructional practices– Classroom quality– Student learning
![Page 4: Rel Final Jan4 08 Pp (3)](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061113/545c5b84b0af9fa42c8b47b7/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
What is the “Hybrid Approach”?
• Teachers participate in professional development in a learning community, focusing on– Effective practices for Algebra I instruction– Use of the technology
• Teachers make use of online resources to support classroom instruction.
• Students have direct access to online resources approximately 40 percent of class time.
![Page 5: Rel Final Jan4 08 Pp (3)](https://reader033.fdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061113/545c5b84b0af9fa42c8b47b7/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Professional Development Component
• Creating a Community of Learners– Research Based Best Practices in Algebra I
• Spotlight on Algebra• Mathematical Literacy Strategies
– Trainings- Face to Face and Embedded Distance Collaborations
– Sharing Routines/Processes • Supporting Teachers in Implementation
– Technical Support– Facilitation Support– Intentional Focus on Research Standards

Hybrid Algebra 1 Classroom Model
• Typical Lessons– KVHS Lesson demonstration– Example Monitoring Tool
• Routines/Processes – Transparency of Learning Goals– Tracking Tool– Independent Learning– Intentional Whole Group Reflection

How your school can participate
• Participating schools must– Offer at least one section of Algebra I for 9th graders– Have adequate technology and technology supports, as
established and verified by KVHS.– Agree to data collection plan
• Schools will be randomly assigned to intervention or business-as-usual control group.
• Intervention schools begin professional development in spring 2008, and use online resources to help support learning in SY’s 2008/09 and 2009/10.

Data that will be used to assess impact
• One-day visit to each school• One 10-minute teacher survey• One EOC assessment for students• Student administrative records
– Enrollments– Student background characteristics– 8th grade test scores– 10th grade PLAN, math course enrollment, grade
and continued HS enrollment
