ou r m i s s io n “To rejoice in, and share
the good news of Jesus Christ
What does the future hold for Rejoice! Lutheran Church? For the past cou-ple months many of us have been talking about how to reclaim the sense of urgency and mission for the congregation. Summertime is a difficult time to try and have this discussion as people are busy and traveling. However, we cannot wait and the Church Council is planning a Congregational Retreat this fall. You may have noticed that our Mission Statement: “To Rejoice in and Share the Good News of Jesus Christ with all people” keeps appearing. You have also seen the Purpose Statement: “To be Love in the World” is being included in communications to you. I have said in my sermons that if we are doing these things I am content with whatever God has in store for us. So the question is: Are we doing these things?
Rejoice has a history of being a congregation that does things. We host the Hudson Community Food Pantry, we have the clothing shed. We open our building to A.A. and Al-anon, Girl Scouts, and other non-profits who ask us for space. We participate in Habitat for Humanity, Hudson Community Ser-vice Association, and the Hudson Ministerial Association. We make Quilts and School Kits for Lutheran World Relief. We give Christmas gifts to the kids in the Oasis Program in Akron. We recently gathered together back-packs and supplies for Hudson school children. The Samaritan Fund has helped hundreds of people over the years and continues to do so. But, does this mean we are doing what our Mission and Purpose Statement intended?
Bishop Elizabeth Eaton recently stated that, “We are not a Social Service Agency with Sacraments”. I understand that to mean that our mission is to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. If we do all these wonderful things, are we telling people about Jesus too? Have we said, “Your sins are forgiven. Be at peace, tell everyone how much God has done for you.” And are we telling people how much God has done for us?
In this new day of the Church we have to realize that people are not going to be in worship or other events as often as they were in the past. I can live with that if we are doing what our Mission and Purpose Statement says we are to do. But if we are not doing those things, we have a problem. I hear people telling me we have to grow or cut back. My response is, “Okay, what are you doing?” Because if you are not living out our mission and purpose perhaps that is where we need to begin first?
Rejoice has so much to offer and we have solid base. There are many peo-
ple in our lives that need to hear the message of grace, love and forgive-
ness. We are not about making bad people good. We are about making
dead people alive! Is there enough urgency in that? I know so! I also know
that we have faithful dedicated members at Rejoice! We are a miracle in
itself and God is not done with this miracle yet.
Peace, Pastor Mike

Dinner for Eight The Dinner for Eight barbeque takes place on Saturday, August 27
th at 5:00
pm. A volunteer is still needed to host! If you would be interested in host-ing, please contact Michelle Conklin as soon as possible. Those planning on attending should sign up at the Welcome Station or RVSP to Michelle at [email protected]. Meat will be provided, please sign up to bring a side, salad or dessert to share as well as your own beverages.
We will begin our regular rotations in September. If you are unable to attend the barbeque but wish to participate please to be sure to let Michelle know no later than August 31
st in order
to be included in the September rotation.
Dinner for Eight meets approximately 5 times per year in individual groups and twice as a large group for a barbeque in August and a Christmas party in December. Each couple/person is assigned to bring the main dish, salad and side dish or dessert and the host pro-vides bread and beverages as well as the place to meet. You need not be a couple or host in order to participate. For more information or to be included pick up an info sheet at the Wel-come Station or contact Michelle Conklin.
Rejoice Quilting Our quilters are in need of fabric donations as our supply is dwindling! If you (or friends) have a stash of unused fabric in the back of a closet, please consider donating. Also, new twin sheets for quilt backs would be appreciated. We expect to have over thirty quilts to send to Lutheran World Relief in October. For more information contact Marilyn Olzmann, 330 650-1252.
This year’s project is at 1348 Yellowstone in Akron, adjacent to the home that we built last year. This home will be almost identical.
The two building dates that have been assigned to REJOICE are August 6th and
October 22nd. So far we have 6 volunteers for Aug. 6, but 1-2 more would be great! No experience is needed, although there is a minimum age limit of participants of 18 years.
Typically work starts about 8:30-8:45 in the morning and winds up at approximately 3:00PM. Tools, lunch snacks and beverages are provided.
Please give it some serious thought and volunteer. You won’t be sorry. There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex. If you have any questions, please contact Tom Freborg (330 / 998-8395)
Habitat for Humanity Rejoice Outreach Event
The Rejoice Outreach Team is plan-ning a Potluck Picnic in September to commemorate our involvement with the HCSA (Hudson Community Ser-vice Association) Food Pantry. Our congregation is encouraged to attend and bring a dish to share and we plan to invite the administrators from HCSA and their clients to attend and celebrate with us! Watch for flyers and sign-up sheets in the coming weeks!

Many people enjoy gardening in the summer and are already enjoying the fruits of their labors. Here are a few gardening health tips to consider from https://www.health.ny.gov/publications/1301/
Happy Summer!
Why garden?
There are many benefits to growing your own fruits and vegetables, such as
More fresh and healthy food – fruits and vegetables contain fiber, vitamins, and
minerals and can reduce the risk of stroke, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and
some types of cancer
More control over whether chemicals are used to treat for pests and weeds
More exercise and a chance to connect with nature
Less need to transport food from distant farms
Lower fruit and vegetable bills at the grocery store
Follow these planting and gardening tips.
If you are concerned about chemicals in the soil, consider growing vegetables in raised
beds with clean soil (at least ten inches deep). Use untreated wood to make the beds. Pressure-
treated wood and railroad ties contain added chemicals.
Wear gloves when working in the garden and avoid bringing soil inside the house. Brush off your
clothes and remove shoes and gloves.
Wash up with soap and water after gardening or any time before you eat.
Keep an eye on little ones to make sure they do not eat soil or put dirty toys or other objects in
their mouths. Young children can be more sensitive to certain chemicals in soil, such as lead.
If you are having problems with pests, try using an "Integrated Pest Management" approach.
If you do use pesticides, carefully read and follow all label instructions.
And remember, if you plan to be outside for more than 10-15 minutes, apply sunscreen or wear
protective clothes (for example, long sleeve shirt, long pants and a wide brimmed hat).

Paying it Forward Rejoice has been so
blessed by many mission
partners. Let us pay it
forward to others who
need our blessings!
August’s 3rd Sunday of the month loose offering will be given to ELCA World Hunger. Your gifts make it possible for ELCA World Hunger to respond, and support sustainable solutions that get at the root causes of hunger and poverty.
Many thanks to those who contributed in July to the Rejoice Samaritan Fund, we collected $132.00.
TMJP (Youth Group) TMJP will meet on Wednesday, August 31
st from 7-
8:30. Bring a snack to share and ideas for upcoming activi-ties! We’ll also discuss fundraisers for the 2018 national Youth Gathering in Houston. All youth in grades 6-12 are invited to attend.
Hospitality As summer winds down, please consider signing up to help out with our hospitality ministry at Rejoice!. Hospitality is important in helping welcome our guests as well as provide an opportunity for members to stay around and visit after services. A sign up sheet is located at the kitchen pass window. It isn’t hard and doesn’t take much time! Volunteers for early service make coffee and set out supplies (napkins, mugs, etc.) as well provide a snack (store bought or home-made, your choice, healthy snacks welcome!). Volunteers for second service make more coffee if needed, provide a snack and clean up after church. Please consider volunteering!
