Development in Brazil – New Horizons
Increasing agricultural modernization and food production capacity
Development in Brazil – New Horizons
- Tropical areas are the most challenging to agriculture -Intense biotic (pests) and abiotic (drought, soil acidity, low nutrients, etc) stresses.
All these challenges will be intensified with the global climatic changes.

This Project is funded by the European Union under the 7th Framework Programme
Main objective
 The main objective of BIO CIRCLE 2 is to foster the knowledgebase about FP7 FAFB & the networking capacities of Third Countryresearchers in order to reinforce their participation in FP7 projects.
3 project goals are distinguished:
 Disseminate information effectively to Third Country researchers; Organise information days and training for Third Country
researchers; Provide Third Country researchers with efficient networking
opportunities.

Impacts of FP7 Projects at Embrapa
 Establishment of a global research network including universities, research institutions and companies;
 Financial support from EC (European Community) has facilitated Embrapaparticipation in International Programs consolidating its scientific collaboration on the recommendation of sustainable production systems;
 The involvement of laboratories from all over the world in the validation of protocols strengthens the reliability of the methods and the certainty that they may be used as common tools among countries;
 Results from different projects may allow indications for public policies in distinct areas of agricultural production.
 Biocircle 1&2: Created conditions to enable projects from different EmbrapaResearch Centers to be submitted to the Framework Program;
This Project is funded by the European Union under the 7th Framework Programme
Difficulties encountered
 Both EC and Embrapa have different and bureaucratic procedures that have to be followed making the process very hard to accomplish;
 Even though Portuguese is an official language at EC, the documents under FP7 have to be in English and for Embrapa all documents have to be in Portuguese in order to have legal value. Translations take time and financial resources, making it hard to comply with the schedule;
 These complicated procedures regarding the approval of the documents from both sides lead to difficulties on transferring resources and consequently on coping with the execution of the project and on the participation of researchers in some international meetings;
 That leads to the necessity of finding an easier way of receiving and using the resources like the inclusion of a Foundation, which has already happened in some projects.
